"Jenna, you and the girls are my family. My everything. I would burn the world down to protect you and them." He said, his voice was thick with emotion as he brushed some hair from her face tenderly.

"Mom didn't say. But she wants us to just relax and not worry about anything. She said she has everything under control." His arms tightened around her instinctively, like if he held on tightly enough, maybe everything would stop falling apart for five minutes.

"I think we could both use some sleep," he admitted quietly. "Not because I think either of us is gonna get much of it." He pressed a kiss to the top of her head.

"But we should try. And if it doesn't happen..." A soft sigh escaped him. "Then we lay here together and pretend we're resting.

“Love you,” Jenna murmured sleepily, not because Declan needed to hear it, just because it was always the last thing she told him every night before falling asleep. At first, closing her eyes had once again proven to be absolutely pointless. Sleep simply wasn’t there, no matter how hard she tried to focus. Finally, pure exhaustion took over, and she managed to escape to a surprisingly peaceful dreamland.

Hours passed, and she knew it; she was waking up to the sun setting just outside the bedroom window, as well as the all too familiar sound of small feet bounding up the staircase.

“Sounds like the girls are back.”

Downstairs, Merritt placed a couple of containers into the refrigerator before grabbing a fresh bottle of water and shutting the door behind her as Abigail headed straight for her room to play until she was forced to give up her toys to start her nightly bedtime routine. Assuming both parents were asleep, the thought of sneaking onto the computer to check her various social media accounts and find out what her friends were saying crossed her mind, yet she decided against the idea, at least for the time being anyway.

Little did she know, part of what Declan and Jenna had done the previous night to keep their daughter out of serious trouble had meant the erasure of any pictures and videos of the party anywhere online. It was basically as if the entire event had never existed in the first place.

Knowing it was now or never, the teenager slowly made her way upstairs, hesitating for a mere few seconds before gently knocking on the door to her parents' bedroom, waiting for the okay to enter.

Declan’s eyes stayed fixed on Jenna, tracing her every movement. She was intoxicating. He let out a quiet groan when he realized just how much she was enjoying his vulnerability.

Still, he didn’t care. He was utterly and completely besotted with his wife, and he had long since stopped pretending otherwise.

“Meetings all day,” he muttered dramatically. “Boring meetings.” He moved toward her then, unsatisfied with the distance the desk created between them. She was too far away. He couldn’t touch her.

Stopping beside the desk, he leaned against it lightly. “Kept thinking about you,” he admitted quietly. His eyes traveled over her for a moment before returning to hers.

“Thought about calling.” A small shrug followed. “But hearing your voice didn’t sound like enough.” A teasing smile slowly returned. “So I came to bother you in person.”

Right eyebrow raised in genuine curiosity at the confession of his thoughts being consumed by her, rather than whatever it was the meetings had been about. Then again, she had a pretty good idea of what exactly it was she was doing in those thoughts, and it only caused her grin to widen.

The desk had been enough of an obstacle for Jenna to keep her composure, yet now that Declan had closed much of the distance between them, his wife was suddenly finding it increasingly difficult to keep her hands to herself. Coupled with the sound of his voice and the way he was looking at her, remaining strictly professional was becoming more of a struggle by the second.

“Have you eaten yet? I could call and order us in a late lunch, or did you have something else in mind?”

If it were most any other week, she would’ve suggested simply taking the remainder of the day off, yet if he didn’t find it as boring as his plethora of morning meetings, he was most certainly welcome to stand back and observe her completing what was left of the inventory, making sure none of the show outfits needed to be steamed or cleaned, etc.

A WHOLE BUNCH OF QUESTIONS

Mouth opened to respond, yet no sound came out. No words were uttered. Truthfully, it'd been so long that Madeline honestly couldn't remember. Each time she closed her eyes, she saw things she didn't want to, leaving her tossing and turning as her mind simply refused to shut itself off.

"Let me get back to you on that one," she finally spoke, suddenly curious as to just how obvious her exhaustion was to those around her.

"She's a firecracker." Declan said, a hint of pride in his voice. "Oh I think you two would have a ton in common." He said keeping up the ruse.

Declan grinned and followed her to her office. Of course he knew the way, but he loved when she took charge. Plus, the view from behind was pretty damn good.

Once they were behind closed doors, Declan’s grin widened. "Ms. Morgan, forgive me. I know that you're an incredibly busy woman. But, I simply couldn't resist getting you alone."

"You walk into a room and suddenly everyone knows what they're doing. It's impressive." A soft chuckle escapes him. "Honestly, watching you work should count as a business expense. Maybe even a tax write-off."

His expression softened then.

"I missed my wife."

Four simple words. Honest ones.

"So I thought I'd steal a few minutes of your time." A teasing grin slowly returned. "Unless...investors need appointments now."

The four-word confession caused Jenna’s heart to skip a beat, and just like that, it was game over. No more pretending.

“Husbands never need appointments,” she grinned slyly, taking a seat in the chair behind her desk, one long, slender leg crossed over the other underneath. Leaning back, she gave him a not so subtle once over, very much enjoying what she saw while silently studying the sight in front of her.

“So, tell me more about how you missed me so much that you decided to drive all the way across town in the middle of a workday, just so you could see me in person.”

A phone call would’ve surely sufficed, yet Jenna loved how that apparently wasn’t enough to satisfy her husband. He needed more, and she was ready and willing to give him whatever his heart desired.

Although, something told her that whatever Declan’s intentions were, it was going to take a lot longer than just a few minutes of her time.

Declan watched her every move. She still fascinated him even after all these years. The way she moved, the way she carried herself. Her question caught his attention and a smirk appeared on his lips. "Just one?"

He moved towards her, his arms encompassing her waist. "For starters, I love the noises you make. I love when you call out my name. I also love when you're in control and you take what you want." His voice was low and husky as his lips hovered near her earlobe.

He was intentionally teasing her. As if he wanted her to do just that. Take what she wants.

“Hm, you mean like this?”

The oversized hem of his dress shirt swished against her bare thighs with every step Jenna took as she backed them up over towards the sofa. Holding Declan’s gaze the entire time, she gave him no time to think about what was going to happen next as she gave his bare chest a firm, deliberate push against the plush cushions.

Straddling his lap with a wicked grin as his shirt splayed out around her, she admired the sight in front of her for a few seconds before peppering slow, gentle kisses from his jawline up to his earlobe.

“Round two,” she purred, pulling back all too quickly as her demeanor shifted slightly.

Given the intensity of their first round, eyes scanned his face for even the slightest sign of hesitation. Yes, a small part of her was concerned, but it was mainly a teasing tactic to make him grow impatient and crave her touch that much more.

“Unless you don’t think you can handle another,” she murmured, fingers tracing a slow trail down his chest. “If you’re still completely worn out from the first one, I’d understand.”

Jenna knew exactly what she was doing and exactly what type of reaction even the smallest of blows to his pride would provoke. She was more than ready for him to prove her wrong, just as long as he followed her rules that time.

Declan’s gaze softened at her words, something warm and unwavering in his expression as his arms tightened around her. “I’m not going anywhere,” he murmured, his voice low but certain. There was no hesitation in it. No doubt.

His hand moved gently along her back, grounding, steady, like he was anchoring them both in the moment.

The kiss caught him just as off guard as it always did, but he melted into it without resistance, returning it with that same quiet intensity he never quite knew what to do with.

When she pulled back, her words drew a soft huff of a laugh from him—fond, almost disbelieving. “Yeah?” he murmured, his forehead resting lightly against hers.

He paused briefly. “Pretty sure I’d beat you to it,” he added, a faint smile tugging at his lips. His thumb brushed gently along her cheek, eyes never leaving hers.

“Lucky for us… we already got it right the first time. But, for the record, I would marry you a million times over.”

Catching sight of the clock on the infotainment screen, Jenna was brought back to reality far too quickly. The realization elicited a reluctant sigh, yet she decided to hold out for one more minute before forcing them to face the inevitable.

“A million times is a lot of paperwork, among other things,” she teased, playfully bumping her shoulder against his. “Now, stop being such a massive distraction, because if we stay back here any longer, they’ll probably have already given our suite away to someone else.”

Untangling herself from his arms, she smoothed out her clothes and navigated the awkward scramble over the center console and back into the front passenger seat. No longer being held in Declan’s warm embrace left her cold, yet the promise of a real bed was a powerful motivator. There they could curl up together underneath the comfort of the covers for as long as they wanted without the hum of occasional traffic whizzing past.

Buckling her seatbelt, she turned in her seat to look back at him. “As much as I enjoy you making me feel like a teenager in the backseat of her boyfriend’s car for the first time, I’m pretty sure a king-size bed in a luxury hotel is a major upgrade, so move it. Front seat. Now.”

He had never felt this kind of exhaustion before. The kind that seeps into your bones and muscles. The kind where you are literally so tired that sleep evades you.

Holding Jenna close, his body was only slightly less tense. He shifted again when she spoke and when he felt her tears, he looked down at her face, one hand moving to brush any remaining tears away with his thumb.

"You do not have to thank me for protecting what is mine." He said softly. "This life, this family that we've built together, Jenna? It's everything to me. The reason I breathe."

There was nothing he wouldn't do for them, no line he wouldn't cross. The events of the night had proven that. "I love you too. There are no words to express the depth of my love."

“Yes, I do,” she insisted, voice rough and hoarse from the combination of exhaustion and tears. The exact lengths Declan had gone to were still unknown to his wife, yet she wasn’t about to let him act as if it hadn’t mattered immensely.

“When you first told me Merritt was arrested, I felt like the ground had completely given way underneath us, but you didn’t hesitate – not for a single second. You made sure that no matter what it took, this wasn’t going to define her for the rest of her life.”

Yes, Jenna would have played the exact same cards, but Declan’s level of power reached higher and further than her own, and she had zero qualms about using that fact to their advantage.

Shifting to bury her face in the crook of his neck, she breathed in the familiar scent of him, finally, truly relaxing for the first time in a long time.

“How much longer do we have until the girls get back?”

In a way, it felt like hours had passed by, but at the same time, it also felt like the day was never going to end.

“Usually when I am about to go to sleep," explains Abby, grinning as she gently presses Jenna's hand into her side, hoping to encourage her son to move around some more. "He is pretty chill otherwise. Some jabs and rolls here and there, but when I am on the go? He is, most of the time, sound asleep. I don't think you've gotten to feel this yet, have you?" It really is her favorite part as well.

Even though she still has weeks to go, Abby finds herself already missing the journey. Pregnancy has certainly been… interesting, but getting to talk about it with someone who has been through it makes her feel less alone. "He's got a big head! They think he's going to be like ten pounds. I know they're probably wrong, Jenna, but they keep insisting. I definitely look like I am smuggling a pumpkin, don't I?"

“I remember those days. The only thing that used to calm my youngest down was when my husband would talk to her,” Jenna reminisced with the tiniest hint of a nostalgic smile. Between pageants, cheerleading, figure skating, etc., Merritt still found staying still for more than five minutes at a time a chore. Abigail, on the other hand, had been more subtle about her movements. Unfortunately, a good number of them happened when her mother was attempting to relax a little bit.

“You’ve definitely got that pregnancy glow,” Jenna observed, as if that was all that truly mattered. “As soon as they lay him on your chest and you see that adorable, little face for the first time, everything else fades away, and it’s just the two of you.”

No sooner had she finished her thought then there was a kick against her hand, almost as if the little guy fully approved of every single word.

Watching her work was one of his favorite pastimes. His eyes lit up as she made her way towards him. Hands immediately moving to her waist, he returned her kiss. "Ms. Morgan." He said, chuckling lightly.

"Perhaps a bit of both." His tone was teasing. "I missed my wife and thought I would watch her work. She's a fantastic designer you know. Totally sexy too."

"Just don't tell her I'm sneaking around with you." He joked. "Think you can sneak off for a bit. I'm sure I can make it worth your time."

“She sounds like one hell of a woman,” Jenna mused with the hint of a mischievous grin as she willingly played along. “I just might have to meet her sometime. Something tells me we’d have a lot in common.”

Biting down against her bottom lip, she feigned a moment of contemplation at the inquiry, glancing over towards the empty runway for a few seconds and then back at him.

“Hold that thought.”

Without any further elaboration, she turned in the direction of her assistant. If he wanted to watch her work, she would gladly indulge him. The fact that she was currently in full boss mode was simply a bonus.

“Do a final run-through with the halter before the tunic, and then let everyone know they’re free to go as soon as all the clothes and accessories have been organized, inventoried, and secured. I’ll be back to do a final check of everything as soon as I can.”

Upon receiving the expected confirmation, she returned her undivided attention to her favorite investor.

“Why don’t we continue this discussion in my office?”

Leading the way, stilettos clicked against the floor as she walked with purpose, closing the door behind them once they were inside.

“As I’m sure you’ve noticed, I’m an extremely busy woman, Mr. Hayes. What was it you needed that couldn’t wait?”

It had been back to back meetings all morning. Declan hated that part of the job. He told his secretary to hold all his calls for the rest of the day. He left Fidus, set on a particular location.

He knew Jenna was busy. They were preparing for a fashion show at the end of the week. He didn't intend on distracting her. But, he liked watching his wife work. Besides, he was technically an investor.

He drove across town and arrived at the studio. Declan greeted security on the way in. He was waved through to the back. As he moved, chaos erupted around him. Yeah, they were definitely busy.

He smiled briefly as he glanced around, searching for the most beautiful woman to exist.

Fashion Week might have been over in the middle of February, but all that meant was that it was time to move on to the next season of designs. June meant the debut of the 2027 resort wear line, and given the deadline was fast approaching, Jenna and her team were working around the clock to perfect the final touches on the upcoming show.

“Let’s try the halter dress before the tunic dress and let me see how that looks,” she decided, after observing the flow of the initial run-through. “Other than that, I think we’ve got it.”

Stepping down from the runway, eyes caught sight of the most handsome man to ever exist, bright smile the immediate reaction to his unexpected yet highly welcomed presence.

“On second thought, let’s take five,” the designer announced, certain the models and everyone else would appreciate the well-deserved break.

“Mr. Hayes,” she teasingly greeted him professionally, crossing the floor over to where Declan was currently standing. Arms now wrapped around his neck, said greeting turned much more personal in nature as it was punctuated by a kiss. “Are you here for business or pleasure?”

Declan felt some of the tension ease, as his mother assured him that the girls would be fine. When the phone call ended, he put the phone away. Groaning lightly, he allowed Jenna to pull him against her.

He shifted a bit, not wanting to crush her with his weight. Once he was beside her, he wrapped his arm around her and pulled her into his chest. His movements were slow.

"Sweetheart, I'm so sorry our anniversary has ended up like this." He murmured softly. "And I'm also sorry that I don't have the energy to do anymore celebrating right now."

“Shh, we don’t have to talk about any of that right now,” Jenna soothed as she snuggled up against him. Given how spent they both were by that point, physical contact was more than enough for the time being. Not only that, but it was nice to just lay there in peace and quiet for a little while.

Unfortunately, the type of exhaustion currently being felt was the one that left a person too tired to fall asleep, which meant her thoughts had officially kicked into overdrive. Instead of rehashing the previous night’s events, though, they took her back a full seventeen years to one of the worst days she’d ever lived. For whatever reason, it felt appropriate given the circumstances, and for once didn’t sting quite as badly to recall.

“Thank you,” she breathed, breaking the comfortable silence without context as a single tear trailed a path down her cheek and landed against his chest. Declan had promised all those years ago that nothing in the entire world could ever make him leave or give up on his girls, and current events had proven exactly that all over again. Back then, there’d been a part of Jenna that couldn’t have cared less if he had walked out and never came back, yet now she simply couldn’t picture a life without him in it.

She never wanted to have to, either.

“You’re an amazing father and husband, and I love you more than I ever thought possible.”

Declan listened quietly, the way he always did — giving her his full attention without interrupting. He knew how complicated dating could be, and if he was being honest, he was grateful he didn’t have to navigate that world anymore.

Seeing her struggle never sat right with him. His first instinct was always to fix it — to make it better — but he knew this wasn’t something he could solve for her.

A faint grin tugged at his lips when she mentioned giving up dating altogether.

“Great idea,” he said lightly.

Then, just as quickly, his tone shifted — still warm, but more serious.

“Because, believe it or not, there isn’t a person on this planet worthy of my baby girl.”

That part, he meant.

“Merritt… listen to me.” His voice softened just a fraction. “Whatever you do, don’t ever settle. You know what you want. You know what you deserve. Don’t accept anything less.”

A small pause.

“And be patient. The right person will come along.”

Just as she knew it would, everything Declan was saying made perfect sense. Sure, parts of it were typical girl dad responses, and she’d had to hold back a bout of light laughter or two, but that was just one of the many reasons why she loved him so much. The perfect mixture of humor and fatherly wisdom was exactly what Merritt needed right then.

“You know patience and I have never gotten along with each other very well,” she grinned, mood suddenly feeling that much lighter as a familiar sparkle began making its way back into her eyes once more. A slow burn was well worth it, if real life was indeed anything at all like the movies, but there was a part of the brunette that wanted to skip right to the example she’d grown up with her entire life thus far.

Then again, what if they didn’t even make men like that anymore?

“Speaking of the right person, though, I’m obviously not saying it’s him, and I know he’s like already thirty or something, but that new guy you recently hired at Fidus is pretty hot. Yeah, I know absolutely nothing about him, and we only spoke like two words to each other when I was there the other day, but maybe if you gently nudged him in my direction, it might eventually turn into something more?”

Declan let out a heavy, tired sigh. He felt Jenna's hands on him and leaned into her before answering. "It's a long story. The short version is that Merritt had a party while we were gone and got arrested. We've spent the last several hours doing damage control and dealing with consequences." He explained.

"Mom, do you mind taking care of them both for a few hours? I wanna make sure that Jenna gets some rest." Once again, Declan was putting everyone else before himself. That was just in his nature.

"Just knowing that she's somewhere safe, I think that will help us relax a little bit. As long as that's not an issue for you."

“I’ve got it under control,” Melinda confirmed, not needing any further details as she glanced across the room at her two granddaughters currently coloring and drawing together. “You two take it easy. I’ll let you know when they’re on their way home.”

“You’re the one who needs to get some rest,” Jenna murmured against Declan’s shoulder as soon as the phone conversation was finished and hung up. Yes, she was likely the most exhausted she’d been since Abigail was a newborn freshly home from the hospital, but he was the one carrying everyone else’s weight on his shoulders.

“Come on, just for a little while. I’ll be right here with you,” she coaxed, pulling him into her arms as she leaned back against the pillows.

Declan held her close as his breathing began to return to normal. "You're always incredible." He murmured lightly, his lips grazing her ear.

He took a moment to look at her. Damn, he was a lucky man. Here was this incredible sexy woman. She was stubborn, feisty, independent, and for some reason she chose him.

The very thought kept him humble. He brust strand of hair out of her face, tenderly. Her words elicited a light chuckle. "Maybe we should. Wouldn't want to leave my wife unsatisfied."

“Not possible,” Jenna declared matter-of-factly, wriggling out from underneath him and slipping into his previously discarded dress shirt before reaching to pick up the magazine and flip through a few pages.

“Hm, seventy-five questions to ask your significant other,” she read out loud, scanning over the categorized list and making a face at a few of the questions. What the hell was a spirit animal, and who honestly cared about which Hogwarts house they supposedly belonged to? Most of the others, she already knew the answers to.

The final inquiry, though? That one caught her eye and left her genuinely curious.
