I wonder how many stranger’s stories we make it into? You know, maybe someone saw you in passing and told their friends about how pretty the girl in the lavender sweater was. Or maybe they overheard you say a joke and repeated it to their friend, confessing that they heard it from some guy at the store.

Killing oneself is, anyway, a misnomer. We don’t kill ourselves. We are simply defeated by the long, hard struggle to stay alive. When somebody dies after a long illness, people are apt to say, with a note of approval, “He fought so hard.” And they are inclined to think, about a suicide, that no fight was involved, that somebody simply gave up. This is the part that scares me: to wake up in the middle of the night and feel a short stab of pain thinking how much I’ve been made to believe we have something special, before throwing it back to normal, as if it never took place. Just as how it’s easy for me to write your name again or let myself fall back to that same place. Have I been hallucinating? If not, tell me that it’s real, and it still is.
