10 years ago today, Jon Stewart destroyed Crossfire

“Stop hurting America.”

It’s hard to believe a full decade has passed since Daily Show host Jon Stewart made that infamous plea to Crossfire hosts Tucker Carlson and Paul Begala during a tense appearance on CNN’s daily partisan shoutfest.

Daily Show Executive Producer Ben Karlin was with Stewart in Washington the day of his Crossfire appearance. At a 2005 Q&A at Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival, Karlin said:

“It was something we had theoretically talked about a lot before, in the office, like ‘what about just going on that show and just telling those guys off?’ But we didn’t think he’d really do it…."

Last week I did the Mancow morning radio show in Chicago.

It did not go well.

As a comic, I’ve done a lot of morning radio. It’s the main press for most Midwest clubs. Never have I had an experience like the one I just had.

I’ve said this a million times: there should be no limitations on comedy. Anything you wanna fucking do - do. But it should be “why do you want to?” When you learn someone’s story, you might not want to. You still can, but you might not want to. If you really learn what a transgendered person goes through, how scary it is, and how brave they are - you might go “you know, I might wanna make fun of the people that make fun of them.”

Thursday night's Colbert Report will be a rerun so that its star, Stephen Colbert, can be with his family after his mother, Lorna Colbert, died Wednesday at the age of 92. This according to Dan Dinello, via Twitter.
