THIS CROOKED HOME: DISTANCE EP REVIEW

As soon as This Crooked Home’s debut EP, Distance, opens, one can tell there’s promise to them. Hailing from Long Island, New York, This Crooked Home is an alternative pop-punk band who are establishing themselves as a group you’ll want to keep an eye on. ‘Stuck in a Daydream’ opens up the record with a strong guitar and percussion intro, with vocalist Chris Carlson bringing his unique vocal style to the song, giving it heart. What’s interesting about This Crooked Home is that they although they do have a lead singer, they also have backing vocalist and guitarist Nate Rose as well. Carlson and Rose’s blend fluidly, and their vocal dynamic is executed really well on ‘Stuck in a Daydream,’ through harmony and when they sing together as well, in a way that echoes Underoath’s Spencer Chamberlain and Aaron Gillespie, except for the fact that This Crooked Home is pop-punk. Carlson and Rose put their all into this song to make for a strong opening song, even on the last line of the bridge, “It slips away but I’m still holding on now All or nothing, we all stand for something.”

The EP then goes straight into ‘Hold My Own,’ a song that’s passionate, relatable, and heavy on well-executed percussion. ‘Hold My Own’ further introduces the band’s sound to new listeners and serves as a refresher for fans who are familiar with it as well. ‘Out of Reach’ is an upbeat pop-punk track, and most likely the standout track on this record. There a lot of powerful dynamics at play on this record, with Carlson and Rose sharing vocal duties in delivering the song’s heartfelt and passionate lyrics in a way that echoes current pop-punk heavyweights like Real Friends and State Champs.

Even with these stylistic counterparts, This Crooked Home has their own distinct style that’s clear on Distance. ‘Nowhere Left to Hide’ is an action-packed song that has some hardcore influences, and also may remind some listeners of early 2000s pop-punk and hardcore. The EP closes with ‘Never Learn,’ a song talking about fractured relationships, with instrumentation that’s a little similar to early A Day to Remember records. Overall, This Crooked Home has proved that they have to potential to not just make it as a pop-punk band, but succeed as well. Distance is a snapshot of what’s yet to come, and from this record, it seems the future is very bright.
