Headcannon--Keith is super anxious about losing Shiro
Remember how Keith got kicked out of the garrison for discipline problems? I think Keith had a huge crush on Shiro and when people said that the Kerberos mission failed due to pilot error (aka: it was Shiro’s fault) HE GOT SO MAD. Like he kept getting into fights so they expelled him.
Fast forward to the start of the cannon, all that grief, anger, and sadness from thinking Shiro was dead didn’t just go away magically because he found out Shiro was alive. It needed to go somewhere. Emotions don’t just disappear. They evolved into anxiety–specifically around losing Shiro the Galra again.
For Keith, anxiety comes with being VERY irritable and single minded. So after he loses Shiro again, he becomes completely irrational. And I think he obsesses over Lotor so much because with Zarkon presumed dead (by Voltron at least at that point), Lotor has become the new face of the Galra to Keith. To get back at the Galra, Keith needs to get Lotor.
Also I think Keith is attracted to Lotor and big hates himself for it
So when Shiro comes back, notice how Keith starts isolating himself and pushing everyone away. He’s self sabotaging. He’s trying to punish himself. And this behavior keeps growing. Leading right up to him trying to ram a freaking GALRA CRUISER with his tiny little fighter. (keith you ok? no. no he’s not)
can’t wait for keith to immediately walk up to shiro, squint his eyes at him and go like… “ok who are you and what have you done with shiro?”
like he’s gonna realise there’s something wrong IMMEDIATELY and it’s gonna be the worst thing EVER i can’t wait

the final episode of Voltron better not be the Big Fight but the after party. I want a whole 23 Netflix Minutes dedicated to the absolute rager that the paladins would throw. I wanna see whatever the Galra equivalent of beer pong is. I wanna see a dance off between Lance and Coran that lasts for ages until Matt comes in and crushes it. I wanna see Shiro doing a keg stand of space juice. Allura throwing down the sickest beats. Hunk and Lotor doing a shots competition. Pidge and Keith smashing all of Zarkon’s stuff. Kolivan actually smiles. Just a seriously well deserved after party

This image btw, came to be thanks to @velkynkarma for her wonderful series “Parallel by proxy” where she explores this idea. I love the universe she built here because the two Shiros are exactly the same, the only differences are one has more gray hairs and is less muscled and the other has developed a big brother complex….but both still have the same deadpan humour. :P

Ahh damnit! I had to update this image because Velkynkarma added a new work for this series and now Ryou has his own color for his uniform so…
mmmh there’s something odd with my laptop because the green looks “greener” in my mobile… which makes me wonder: if Shiro is the black paladin, what do they call Ryou? the-lemon-pie-green paladin?
then again he chose that olkarian green so maybe and since they are in space he’s getting an alien word? like “this is Ryou the [untranslatable-olkarian-word-for-that-shade-of-pale-green] paladin and his brother the black paladin”? god I hope so, because Ryou didn’t suffer bondage and escape and almost death to be called the Lemon pie green Paladin. :P
HOLY CRAP this is soooo goooood! Look at the two of them together! They look so great! And so comfortable and happy around each other too! And I like that Ryou is visibly a little thinner but it’s only really obvious when they’re standing next to each other, that’s spot on :D Lookit Ryou in his lemon pie green armor! I love this! If canon, Shiro and Keith are star-crossed lovers both in the literal and poetic sense. I love it.
Absolutely everything about Keith and Shiro says literal star-crossed lovers and I adore every second of it. Shiro getting abducted on Kerberos? Lauren outright says, “But he would have come out to space for Shiro, cause Shiro was his family.” (source). Keith and Shiro are shown dramatically falling away from each other and landing on opposite ends of a desolate planet? The episode of them desperately searching for each other is literally called Across the Universe, named after an iconic love song. Keith goes through his BOM trial ready to turn away from his team and his duty as a paladin–even his own father? The one thing that breaks his revolve and sends him running back is Shiro. Shiro, who is the literal manifestation of his greatest hopes and dreams, the person he “desperately wants to see.”
And after, when Shiro finds out Keith is galra–is part of the alien race that brutally tortured and tormented him for a year? He accepts him with open arms, looks at him bathed in light in absolute awe, like he’s something precious and beautiful rather than the monster everyone expected him to see. Pulls him into a warm hug. Cares to the point where Joaquim even says, “with Shiro, we have that history. But he loves Keith, so he sees the good in him.” (source). It’s the fact that Shiro took Keith to Kerberos in lieu of his blood relatives or anyone else. It’s the fact that Keith was the last person he wanted to see before takeoff. It’s the fact that Keith’s the one running back to him when he crashes back to Earth. It’s Ulaz telling Shiro, “The Blade of Marmora is with you,” and Keith’s blade being the thing that cuts him free.
It’s the fact that Keith loses Shiro again, fights the grieving process every step of the way. It’s grief-laden outbursts and begging for the Black Lion not take him. It’s talking to her like she’s him, shutting out the others to speak to the Lion like confession, trying to reach back out to Shiro through her. “I know this is what you wanted for me, Shiro. But I’m not you. I can’t lead them like you.” “Please, no.” “This one’s for you, Shiro.” It’s how Keith was the one to find “Shiro” again, it’s the fact that none of the others are there for the reunion and it’s just them. It’s always been them. Just the two of them, floating steadily into each other’s orbit as they gaze out longingly after one another across the vast expanse of space.
It’s how Keith is the only one “Shiro” can bear to let see him like this. So vulnerable and alone. Hiding the true depth of his trauma from everyone else, allowing just Keith to stay by his bedside and care for him after all this time. The quiet intimacy of the bedroom scene, the way that Shiro teases Keith for being his knight in shining armor again. “How many times are you gonna have to save me before this is over?” The way Keith smiles and simply says, so unabashed and unconditionally fond, “As many times as it takes.” As if it’s that easy, as if you can swear a life debt just like that. As if staying by Shiro’s side and keeping him safe was all he could ever want.
It’s the fact that Keith pulls apart from the team in the first place in part because of Shiro’s needs. It’s the way “Shiro” tells Keith he and the rest of the team will always be there for him. It’s the way Keith focuses solely on Shiro and says, “I know. And I can’t tell you how much that means to me.” Pulls him into another warm embrace that moves the others to tears. It’s because Keith skids to a halt in front of the Black Lion and panics. It’s the way he says Shiro’s name so forlornly, the way he screams, “Ilun, Vrek, we have to stop! Shiro is out there!” It’s the way he races back inside and starts disarming bombs while they’re still ticking, even as his own teammates turn away and say, “Then you’ll die with them.”
It’s the fact that they’re always torn apart only to come crashing back together. It’s both of them together even with the whole universe against them. After everything they’ve been put through, after all they’ve given…they deserve to be together.
Call me a dweeb but Shiro's "patience yields focus" mantra has actually helped me a lot with anxiety and just getting through rough times in general. I need me a space daddy. ;w;
ashasksdflkg that’s okay anon,, I really like how they showed Shiro was able to help Keith and really anchor him when he needed it. The way Voltron shows that they’re both able to be vulnerable around one another and look to each other for help is…very refreshing, especially coming from “strong” male characters, you know? Anyway, you don’t have to apologize for finding comfort in something.
On the topic of Patience yields focus though, I’m going to say right now that physical affirmations–words of comfort, someone holding me, ect–were very, very helpful during panic attacks. I have anxiety too, and having the right grounding methods has really helped me through a lot. So try and find ones that really work for you and don’t feel bad about using them if you ever have to. Good luck anon! I hope you’re able to find the support system you deserve. I know it can be hard, and I’m sorry.

btw Josh Keaton is great and he deserves better than antis treating him like shit again for literally no reason. He and Lauren and Bex and everyone else in the cast and crew that antis harass–I’m sick of people never treating them with respect and basic human decency. Antis are welcome to drop the show whenever they want, but they don’t get to be demanding, entitled children who claim they love the characters while simultaneously attacking the people whose hard work they’ve enjoyed. Leave them the fuck alone.
