He feels Dean’s eyes on him when he thinks he won’t notice, and Castiel, feeling inexplicably tired, ignores it. “There’s no safer place for you than here,” Dean assures him, as the impala climbs upwards, the road turning narrower and bendier. “It’s a hunter’s guesthouse, kind of. Really quiet area. No one will ask questions.” “I see,” Castiel says, hands folded in his lap, throat tight.

As Cas is ordered to leave the bunker, he doesn’t end up at the Gas n’ Sip. Instead, he becomes a worker at a hunter’s guesthouse, situated in the middle of nowhere - where time appears to stand still, and he is left with an aching human body, relentless human chores, and recurring nightmares that feel distinctly like memories. So, he copes with his new form of existence the obvious way: by learning to shoot guns, ride a motorcycle, and by entertaining the flirtations from the other resident James - and inadvertently driving Dean crazy, as a result.

Thoughts on the Denver J2 Gold Panel, having now watched it, rewatched it, and had time to process it:

The J2 panel had a lot of people upset, which is so totally understandable and justified. However, that anger shouldn’t be directed at Jensen, in my opinion.

Jensen did not say that it wasn’t a romantic love, nor did he say it wasn’t a sexual love. He said that Dean did not know it was a romantic love until the end.

He never said how Dean felt about it being a romantic love.

He never said how Dean felt about Cas.

He never said that Cas couldn’t love romantically or sexually.

He did say that lust isn’t involved in romanticism. He’s right. You can have lustful feelings for someone without having any feelings for them at all, and romance does not need to include lustful feelings. If you think that, you are excluding all the people that identify different romantically from their sexual identities (such as those who identify as heterosexual but biromantic, homosexual but heteroromantic, etc.)

However, that wasn’t even his whole thought. He was interrupted by Jared before he had even finished his sentence. This happened more than once. He got to express one full thought in the J2 panel about this topic – which was that the love Cas had was more than simple terms like “romantic” or “sexual” could describe. It went deeper.

His statement about being able to interpret characters differently is also right. Everyone comes to a character differently. What I see, how I feel, and what I take away from the character of Dean is not going to be the same thing you do. Everyone takes different pieces away from a character, finds a different meaning in things that are said or actions that are taken.

There’s a reason “Death of the Author” is one of the beliefs I fully subscribe to – it doesn’t matter what was intended by a writer (or an actor). What matters is the meaning you take from the books, movie, show, character, etc. What matters is your interpretation of these things.

The writers who, for example, try to claim that Dean isn’t bisexual. However, my interpretation of his character is that he’s for sure bisexual, even if he’s deeply in denial about it. The writers can fuck off when they try to claim he’s straight, in my opinion.

Furthermore, I read a beautiful post from thetiredstuff on Tumblr that pointed out how Jensen mentions “interpretation” every time the subject of Cas and Dean are brought up and how that might be something he was told to do by the CW/WB. If he’s contractually bound, he’s contractually bound, and we can all be pissed at the CW/WB about that. Not at Jensen.

But really, he didn’t make the fucking horrible comments at the panel.

No – that was all Jared. Jared was the one that compared homosexuality (and being non-binary) to incent. Jared was the one who made a comment regarding Cas being “junkless” – an invalidating point of view, as what parts a person has or does not have doesn’t matter when it comes to how that person feels, that is hidden behind a callback from a line in the show. It was Jared who dismissed the idea of love as anything important by saying that “you can love anything” and went on to describe physical abuse before using an example of gifting money – both toxic examples that don’t represent the important, deep connection that love really is. His views and the words he chose to use during his tirade about a scene he had no part in were actually very disturbing to me.

However, his views on the scene itself don’t fucking matter (in regard to the meaning of the scene.) I’ll repeat what I said above about it: a scene he had no part in. He did not help write the scene. He did not help brainstorm. He did not have a part in that scene. At all. Who is he to tell us what the point of that scene was about? Who is he to tell us what Castiel meant by “I love you, Dean”?

His opinion on this is just that. An opinion – a narrowminded, homophobic, transphobic, and disgustingly worded opinion.

So, for me, I am ignoring what he has to say on this subject.

I will instead be taking what Jensen had to say, when able to get an actual full thought in, which is that Cas’ love was something indescribable – something that was just more.

Suptober Day 4: Secrets

“I pray to Jack to get his ass home for dinner.”

Dean peeked one eye open, and no sound of flapping wings happened, so he closed his eyes again. Then, with a long tired sigh, Dean did little prayer hands.

“God. If you would like to grace your family with your presence before the food gets cold. That would be swell.” And for added flavor. “Now. Jack. Now.”

Dean opened his eyes as soon as he heard the flutter of wings. Watching his kid give him a familiar glare that resembled someone from his past.

“Dean, I do not like it when you call me God.” Jack walked into Dean’s open arms and returned the awaiting hug. “Did you make the mac and cheese with-?”

“Yeah. With the crunchy top and bacon. Just like you like it.” Dean dropped a kiss on the kid’s head. “Now come on. Before Eileen eats it all.”

The four of them sit around the kitchen table eating, sharing stories, and sharing laughs. Dean tried his best to focus on the family he had in front of him, but he couldn’t help but lose himself in thought.

Someone is missing.

“Dean? You’re out of it again.” Sam kicked his foot under the table to grab his attention. “What’s up?”

Dean shook his head, fork stabbing a little too hard at the noodles on his plate before shrugging. “Nothing. Nothing just-” I am forgetting something. Someone. “Was thinking of Jack’s first hunt. The kid can mind melt someone but can’t hold a shotgun to save his life.”

Jack pouted, and they fell back to their happy talk. Sharing memories. Memories that somehow felt incomplete.

Every story they shared, Dean noticed a hesitant pause in Sam’s words. As if he is editing as he goes. Eileen starts to spell out a name and catches herself before spelling a different one. Jack stays quiet mostly. As if he was afraid to say the wrong thing.

Dean always notices, but how does he bring it up? How can he bring up that sometimes he lays in bed and feels an empty hole growing in his chest? How can he explain that he walks into a room expecting to see someone there, someone specific, and when he doesn’t, the disappointment almost knocks the air out of his lungs? How can he talk to his family that whenever he looks at Jack, it hurts? He doesn’t know why but it does. It hurts so much that he has to work hard to push away the constant pain.

A pain so unfamiliar and with no explanation.

“Dean?”

Constant.

“Hey, Dean. Take a deep breath, man.”

Persistent.

“Do you need some air? Dean. Dean, breath!”

Never-ending.

“Jack, take him outside.”

And in a blink of an eye, Dean was on his knees outside the walls of the bunker. The night air cools him off, feeling the heat that was building up slowly fade, but his breathing stayed ragged.

“It hurts.” It hurts so much.

Dean could hear himself, but he couldn’t understand his words.

Why did it hurt so much? Why? Why? Why?

“I’m sorry.” Jack fell in front of him, taking his face between his hands. “I’m sorry I have to do this.”

“Jack?” Dean looked at him, eyes getting glossy and far away as he remembered the cause of his pain. “Jack. Jack, he’s gone. He’s gone.”

“I know. I know, Dean.”

“I forgot.” Dean grasped at Jack’s shirt, clinging to him. “I forgot about him! Cas...Castiel!”

“Do it, Jack!”

Dean didn’t look at Sam as he approached. Instead, he saw images long-forgotten becoming front and center in his mind.

Cas. Cas. Cas.

“Sam. I don’t want to. I don’t want to make him forget anymore.”

Forget.

“No!” Dean tried to pull away from Jack’s grasp but as weak as the kid looked, he held Dean firmly in place. “No! I don’t want to forget! I don’t want to forget him. Please. Please, don’t take him.”

“Jack. It’s for the best.” And maybe it was. Dean can already feel himself slipping. His thoughts darkening. “You know we have to do this.”

Jack’s eyes filled with tears as Dean continued to struggle. But soon, he nodded. Agreeing to the plan.

“I’m sorry, Dean.”

Dean closed his eyes, knowing there wasn’t any hope in fighting the kid off. So instead, he pictures Cas in his mind. Promising never to forget him again, promising to find him. Promising to one day be able to confess right back.

“I miss you.” Dean prayed as tears slid down his face.

Light soon blinded him.

The next morning, Dean woke up with a little bit of a headache and a knock at his door.

“Hey, Dean. How you feeling?”

Dean looked at Sam with an easy smile. “Not bad. Why? Did we have a wild one last night?”
