sweets in 8x16: *listens to kat and reassures her that that her rape wasn’t her fault, feels immense guilt about having to turn her over to police to the point that he brings it up again in season 9, tells her about his own abuse so that she feels less alone and knows that he’s not just preaching out of his ass, pledges to her that he’ll catch her rapist to make up for being dishonest with her, works together with brennan and angela to actually catch the rapist by meticulously retracing kat’s steps throughout the party where she was assaulted, is the one to sit down with kat and her mom and deliver the news and tell her unsympathetic mom that she needs support in order to recover from what happened*

another thing that bothers me about the way sweets and hodgins’s relationship went is that in season 5, there are a lot of scenes/episodes where hodgins is shockingly gentle to sweets. he lets sweets vent to him and tells sweets to take care of himself after the subway crash, he reassures sweets when he’s feeling insecure about his love life, he shows obvious concern for sweets’s feelings when he finds out daisy’s going to leave, and he gives sweets a really genuine apology when he ends up having to leave sweets behind after stealing the car in the season finale. like yeah he still teases him and is his usual abrasive self, but as a whole he tends to put a lot of energy into making sure sweets is okay.

but then bullet in the brain happens in season 6 and that aspect of their friendship is COMPLETELY forgotten? like, it’s one of the most traumatic things that’s ever happened to sweets in his life and the only thing hodgins does is give him a shoulder pat and say “glad to see you’re okay” before delving into his own issues. it just like. doesn’t make any sense.

This bothered me so much. Blind Freddy could see that Sweets was NOT ok in that car scene. His "no reason to be worried" to Hodgins was not at all convincing and his voice was broken saying it. He just wasn't seen here at all. Someone give him a hug.

Honestly my favorite sweets episode. It’s easily looked over because of how “fast” he seemed to bounce back after Caroline talked to him in his office but really it should have been highlighted more. I would’ve like to have seen him eventually confide in someone like Hodgins or Angela. Or at least have one of them help him and be there.

yeah one of the (many) issues i have with canon’s treatment of sweets is that it really likes to rush through his subplots. it’s not exclusive to 6x11 at all, but it’s painfully obvious there considering that the issues he’s dealing with are like. really fucking heavy actually? like even if caroline’s speech did help him feel less shit about himself he still like. saw someone die violently in front of him. you don’t just get over that.

and oh man i love this episode too but i totally agree that the main team should’ve been more involved in keeping an eye on him. i get that sweets is an adult and everyone has their jobs to do, but it’s not like what happened to him was even a remotely small thing. and once you get the scene where hodgins confides in him without seeming to care much about sweets it just comes off as downright cold imo :^/
