Shaving and makeup tips for hirsutism/excess facial hair!
Shaving; if, like me you have to shave everyday here’s a few things I do to make it easier on the skin:
If you can, shave in the shower so the hair and skin a moist and clean.
Exfoliate, this gets rid of dry skin and exposes the hairs for a closer shave.
Conditioner, weird I know, but it softens the hair and makes it easier.
Men’s razors and shaving cream, they’re meant for the face so it just makes sense. (Plus they’re cheaper!!)
Moisturise. Shaving can be rough on the skin so it can help, but get something without alcohol in its alcohol can burn the skin if there’s a nick. The are also hair minimising creams out there too!
Make-up: I have my own ways for make-up, but I have scoured the internet, every site from PCOS sites to drag queen sites to transgender sites! So hopefully I can help a little.
If you have fair to medium skin tones a light cover of red lipstick, under concealer and foundation can even out the tone of facial hair/beard marks, left from shaving (blue shadow)
Dermablend, I personally haven’t tried this yet, but I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about it.
Kat von D tattoo concealer. Or any tattoo cover foundation works well.
Revlon ColourStay, I love this! It stays on so well and has a great coverage.
Australis powder cream, is the best, most affordable make up that I’ve ever used! It doesn’t dry out your skin. Plus it has amazing coverage.
Those are just a few products that I wanted to post, but ultimately it’s up to you and your skin tone, or if you have acne or other skin issues. I do suggest going to a store with people who know makeup and skin types.
Other suggestions are; make your eyes stand out more, it takes the focus away from the chin. Or a colourful headband or hair clip. Anything above the chin can help take focus away from the chin area, even if you aren’t wearing make-up :)
Okay, just going to add a few things that I do with my hirsutism.
I, too, shave every day. Men’s razors are AMAZING because they are designed to save your face and not to hurt the sensitive areas of your face. Personally, I don’t like them for my legs, arms, armpits etc., but whatever floats your boat. The lady from Big W told me that you need to moisturise straight after shaving, I use Mad Dog (?), which is a man’s moisturiser made to not irritate your skin and it uses all natural ingredients, found in Woolworths in Australia, $10 or so, and it lasts forever. And it actually sells pretty good.
Water is actually just as good as conditioner or soap or water, so if you are not comfortable or can’t afford shaving extras, just shave after you shower. I normally shampoo the areas I shave for extra measure.
I use just usual make up, but I try to make the centre of attention my lips, through dark or bright lipstick, as it is my chin, neck and side burns that are really affected. To hide this I usually leave my hair down, it hides the extra hair when I only have time for my chin. Otherwise, I wear clothes and jewellery that focuses on my boobs (push up bra etc.) or on my fat, because its easier to defer a jab at your size than your body hair.
I would suggest trying this all out and figure out what works for you. Be careful with products like Nair and other hair removal cream, because if it burns you (and it happens, and it hurts like hell), you can’t put make up over it without being in pain.
