Spring Breakers (2013) - dir. Harmony Korine
Spring Breakers is an inebriating neon hypnosis, saturated in sex, subliminal satire and dubstep. People have been complaining because the trailer does not do the film justice⊠and, as a result, walkouts are occurring in cinemas across the globe. But, the thing is, the stylized Skrillex-coated snapshot of the film is more of a clip than an advert. Korine is relentless in his delivery, and the film comes off as a hybrid between Requiem for a Dream and Drive.
The actual narrative of four seemingly good girls funding their spring break adventure by robbing a corner store and its patrons⊠was pretty disappointing. Everything played out in a predictable manor. Thatâs not to say there werenât a few oddball sequences or some really intense scenes (huge props to James Franco, who absolutely crushes it as Alien, a would-be Floridian mob-king) becauseSpring Breakers had more than its fair share of great moments - in particular, a really intense scene with Cotty (Rachel Korine) in the back room of a party surrounded by frat boys, and Alien and Faithâs (Selena Gomez) epic showdown - but by the filmâs violent climax youâll be worn out and find yourself not caring about Brit (Ashley Benson) or Candy (Vanessa Hudgens).Â
Overall Spring Breakers succeeds by its own volition, but Korine felt a little too determined to make his point about modern culture, advertising, the loss of innocence and the corruption of the American Dream regarding todayâs youths. Itâs a successful satire, one of the rarest breeds in cinema, but unlike Four Lions or Dr. Strangelove, Korine opted for dramatic satire, that is only funny because of how many of these situations may ring home.
