#third time's the charm
I have so much to say about chenford in 7x08 but I know however I say it won’t come across as how I’m thinking it I just know in my soul that they’re on their way to a reconciliation based solely off last nights episode. you can’t tell me otherwise. Lucy said she needs to focus and move forward in her career nowhere do I correlate that in being done? with Tim. she had both her career and relationship at one point and she lost one and she’s holding on for dear life not to lose the other.
it all matters, everything that happened with them in 7x08 matters. Lucy would not have brought up her potentially taking the sergeants out of exam in the hospital if she didn’t want Tim knowing, there was no reason for it. these are two babies that love the other so much who have been through so much trauma in their personal lives BEFORE meeting that they unfortunately brought it into their relationship and they’re just trying to figure it out. I have no doubt by the end of the season they’ll find their way back to eachother
also Lucy Chen as Sergeant Lucy Chen, hell yeah
God so much to unpack from that episode but I need to rant because I just don’t feel like that last scene has been given the credit it deserves for setting us on a good path.
Expecting Lucy to completely open up and throw her arms in the air and say ‘Fuck it let’s just be together!’ is completely unreasonable when you consider just how blindsided and heartbroken she was. It is going to take time and while Tim has been doing that work for himself and for them, Lucy has for the most part (7x06 aside) been keeping that firm boundary and that’s FINE.
So yes her saying her priority is her career does feel like a slap in the face when you consider his priority is her (as he made very clear!) But here is the thing… in order for them to actually be together again, she does need to prioritise her career, both in a sense that he is her superior and ethically it wouldn’t be allowed and also because she needs to do this for herself. Her prioritising her career means ultimately that the path for them to reunite is much clearer, removing that ethical block.
And she does not shut down Tim’s suggestion about no longer being her superior! THAT IS A CLEAR SIGN THAT SHE IS THAWING!!! She is open to the possibility of them again but she has to progress first with prioritising herself and that is so VALID!!! She literally says ‘it’s always good to get a head start.’ This is such a clear double meaning to me and maybe I’m delusional but this very much feels like ‘We can out in the work to get to a place where we can be together when that clear boundary of chain of command is lifted.’ She talks about the exam being in a couple of months with that perhaps being the goal - how much work can we do on getting us to a good place by that date? I feel like we’re going to see much more open, honest and directional interactions between them moving forward.
I don’t see this as him letting her go (honestly how did anyone read that from this ep? He literally makes the no longer her sergeant comment 2 mins after his crestfallen face) or her shutting it down because she literally doesn’t. If she was done considering a future with Tim she would have absolutely shut him down after that comment but she didn’t! She welcomed it. She just needs time and now I think they can move forward with the intent of getting in a good place to be together again.
Just been seeing such depressing and defeatist takes on Twitter like please see the nuance and the opportunities this opens! Being with Tim is maybe her second or third thought but that is okay - she has been through a lot and she deserves to put herself first right now. But she isn’t closed off to him anymore and this episode really spotlights that. The doors creaking open….
We shouldn't. I know.

Imagine in (a hopefully) Season 2 of #Rivals we get a whole season of Rupert and Taggie in a secret relationship because there is no going back from “But he’s not you” and “Only she’s not you” and “I can’t breathe without you”
✨Confetti falls to the ground. May these memories break our fall. ✨
