Keith Godard Discusses ‘Memories of 23rd St.’

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing Keith Godard, #MTAArts artist responsible for the playful mosaic artwork at the 23rd St (R,W) station in Manhattan. Godard expanded the notion of graphic design through his public art and exhibition design. The renowned, British-born artist was an award-winning designer and a pioneer in the field of graphic design instruction. His project “Memories of Twenty Third Street,” pays homage to the Flatiron District’s history as a fashion and cultural hub from the 1880s through the 1920s, by depicting hats in the styles of notable figures of that era, positioned on station walls at the height of the individual who would have worn them. As Godard explained, his design intent was “to leave something for the imagination, so that the spectator completes the story.” We are grateful that his vision will continue to provide joy for generations to come.
