Has Marvel ever done a "what if" where Doom is tragically misunderstood and he's not trying to rule the world so much as save it from Reed's accidentally destroying it in one of his fits of rampaging genius-stupidity?
No, but Iâd read the shit out of that. :DÂ

Man, âDoctor Doomâ would be a really weird name for that guy to pick.
Well, he canât help that his last name is Von Doom.Â
(I couldnât swear to it but I think âDoctor Doomâ was actually a name originally given to him by the F4. I might be wrong.)
I mean for all we know âdoomâ means âsaviorâ in LatverianâŠ.
::action linguist rappels into the thread::
This is actually quite likely, assuming we think Latverian is a Germanic language or a Slavic one.
The English word doom actually comes from a Proto-Germanic root that meant think or judge; deem comes from the same root. In other Germanic languages, though, the cognates of doom can mean anything from âsentence (a prisoner)â to âinsight.â (the present sense of doom owes a lot to Christian theology surrounding Doomsdayâliterally âthe day of judgementâ in the original sense.)
In Common Slavic, otoh, the verb dumati meant âto breathe, to blowâ and the derived noun, duma, could also mean âthoughtâ or âadvice.â In Polish, duma now means âpride,â but for the other major Slavic languages it still means âwordâ and/or âthoughtâ â the lower house of Russiaâs legislature is called the Duma. This word was also borrowed into some varieties of Romani with the same meaning, and into Hungarian with the meaning of something like âchitchatâ or âmumbo-jumbo.â (I think itâs also the origin of Romanian dumiri âto enlightenâ but Romance linguistics really isnât my bag.)
Locations within Latvaria seem to use mainly German roots (Dooomstadt, the Rathauz, Doomsburg, names prefixed with von) but the country has also been described as being located in the Carpathians or the Balkans, so itâs quite plausible that it could be either Slavic with a Germanic superstrate or Germanic with a Slavic substrate. So the name Doom could plausibly mean something like âwisdom" with a bit of morpholgical leveling and possibly a raised vowel.
VICTOR THE WISE, WHO LIVES IN THE CASTLE OF WISDOM IN WISDOM CITY!
HAHAHAHAHA a) this is fantastic, but b) now all I can think is, like, Winner McSmartyton of Smartass Castle on Wisecracker Street, Smartypants City.Â
