dialogue prompt event
You had been avoiding Jake Sim.
Considering the fact that he was your best friend, the task was proving to be just as difficult as you had expected it to be.
Maybe even more so. He was surprisingly very clingy—something you had failed to notice in your friendship of four years.
As you turned the corner of the school library’s hallway, your eyes trained on the ground, you felt an arm being thrown around your neck.
You tensed at the contact and took a sharp breath.
“Where have you been today?” Jake questioned casually. “I’ve been searching for you everywhere. And did you buy new clothes? I’ve never seen these before. I gotta say I like this look on you.”
Damn it.
You’d thought wearing a brand-new outfit would make it easier for you to hide from him. You’d even gone as far as wearing a cap and letting your hair down so it could conceal your face. Your teachers had been on your ass for wearing the accessory all day long.
Trying to fight the blush creeping up your neck, you shrugged him off as subtly as you could and put some distance between your bodies. “I’ve been around.”
“Okay.” Jake dragged out the word. You didn’t need to glance at him to know he was frowning. “You’re coming over tonight though, right? There’s a new Riverdale episode out for us to slander. Also my mom’s making lasagne and she told me to tell you to stay over.”
There was no way you could say no to that. Subjecting yourselves to an hour of terrible screenwriting to criticise it was basically a tradition and bonding exercise for both of you.
Turning Jake down would instantly make him suspicious, which would lead to him asking questions. You were a lot of things, and being a terrible liar was one of them.
Jake was a lot of things too, and being an absolute busybody was one of them. He’d push and push and push until you told him the truth.
And you couldn’t possibly confess that you had a gigantic crush on him.
the one where you always confessed to sunghoon while sunghoon always regarded it as nothing of importance. that is until someone else confesses to you and all of the sudden, sunghoon doesn’t look as indifferent as he used to be.

“I like you.”
The first time you told him that, both of you were walking home from school, sharing an umbrella as the rain poured and he held it high above you, making sure that the two of you weren’t going to get wet.
You expected that after your abrupt confession, Sunghoon would immediately stop and glare at you, tell you that he didn’t like you back and that he was annoyed the you had to burden him by telling him your feelings—or perhaps if it was your lucky day, he would suddenly and miraculously claim that he felt the same and the two of you would live happily ever after.
But the thing was though, he didn’t do any of those two scenarios. Instead, he simply rolled his eyes and brought an arm over your shoulder, pulling you closer to his side so that the umbrella would cover you both more efficiently, the chance of droplets pouring on your shoulders slimming. “Of course, you do,” he replied, a playful grin appearing on his mouth afterwards. “Who wouldn’t like me?”
And at that moment, you just knew he didn’t believe you, didn’t take your words to heart, or didn’t want to acknowledge them seriously like you hoped, so you being the coward you were who was also definitely afraid of rejection—you just laughed it off, tucking your hands on the pockets of your hoodie as the both of you continued to walk to the bus stop, never bringing up that topic again for the next months to come.
You did a great job for the most part. You even had a fling with this one guy over the summer before your senior year in high school, even though it still did end up unsuccessful given the said guy’s unwillingness to commit in a legitimate relationship. Looking back at it now, you couldn’t blame him—you two were both too young to deal with matters like that anyways, that calling it quits in the end didn’t hurt as much as you reckoned it would.
You and Sunghoon, on the other hand, remained within each other’s vicinity. He was still the friend you forced yourself not to like again and you were still the friend he only saw platonically.
However, when college came and you and Sunghoon continued to study at the same university, even taking the same program since you also conveniently (sarcasm intended) had the same aspirations to be part of the medical field, you found yourself harboring those feelings still after the years that passed by after the first confession in the rain.
You pretty much continued to be close friends, both part of the friend group that you hung around with whenever you had vacant periods together, so you considered it as inevitable to lose your affection for Sunghoon. That didn’t mean you didn’t try, of course, but no matter what you did, it just didn’t seem to fade away.
“I still like you, you know.”
Sunghoon stopped pouring you another glass of alcohol, a smirk conquering his features before he rolled his eyes and carried on from where he left off.
You frowned at his response, shoving him on the arm that caused him to look incredulously at you for it almost made him drop the bottle of Soju while he poured himself a glass as well.
“Didn’t you hear what I said?” you asked.
He gazed at you. “I heard it just fine.”
“Then why aren’t you saying anything?”
“Do I have to say anything?”
“Yeah.”
“What do you want me to say?” He finished pouring and drank from his glass in one go. “Do you want me to thank you for remaining loyal to me?”
“No.”
“Then what?” He snorted. “Do you want me to tell you that I like you back?”
You slightly glowered at him, grumbling. “You can really be the biggest jerk out there sometimes, Hoon.”
“I know.” Sunghoon sighed, a hint of amusement on his expression. “That’s why it would be great if you just move on. I’m not someone you should be liking. Plus, we’re better off just like this.”
Your bottom lip protruded in a pout; you were obviously already drunk, having just shared a few glasses of beer and now a stronger type of alcohol with not only Sunghoon, but some friends too who already left (hence why it was only you and him who were left alone in the place); you two were only trying to finish the few meat left on the grill and then you can decide to head home too.
Though of course, before doing that, it seemed that your dumb ass still had to confess for the second time in no less than a span of five years just to get once again rejected.
“Hurry eating,” he added as he chewed on the last piece of pork. “I still have to walk you back to the dorm.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever.” You scoffed, earning another look of amusement from the guy sitting opposite of you. “I don’t even know why you still insist on walking me back to the dorm. It’s things like this that really make it difficult for me to move on really.”
“You should guard your heart better then. Don’t be too fragile around every other guy’s nice action.”
“Wah—you really are an asshole.”
Sunghoon snickered. “Should we just not be friends for you to stop falling for me, hm?” He had the nerve to tease.
“Should we?” you fired back with a mocking drunk tone.
He scoffed. “That would be too cruel on my part, don’t you think?”
“Hey, I’m not the one who offered.”
“It was a hypothetical question.”
“Well, I doubt this friendship of ours is important to you as it is to me for it not to be legit.”
“Ah, there you are again with your dumb assumptions.” He clicked his tongue in disapproval. “You don’t have the power to read my mind just yet, ____.”
“Imagine if I did though. Would save me a lot of overthinking and frustration.”
Instead of firing back another comment, he only huffed. “Hurry eating,” he repeated too. “You might get locked out of your dormitory again and—”
“Then I’ll have to sleep in your apartment and hog your bed, I know.” You picked up all the remaining pork from the grill and shoved them all inside your mouth.
Despite your compliance to his demand by the conclusion of that conversation, you still found yourself going to Sunghoon’s apartment later on as you indeed got locked out of your dormitory.
He lent you an old shirt you could remember being worn by him when you were both in high school, along with old basketball shorts that no longer fit him but fortunately still managed to fit you.
Arriving there, he insisted—like expected from a gentleman like him as well—to sleep on the couch while you settle for his bed, a notion you also expectedly complained from but he has always been good at having things his way anyways that you soon didn’t bother to waste your breath arguing with him.
That night, you really told yourself that you will seriously start moving on from your affection for Sunghoon. It was the last straw, you told your stupid heart, and you finally saw the true hopelessness of your one-sided love for the man and the reality of that probably never going to change. Just from his actions earlier that evening, you were positive that a good old friend is what you’ll only be for him and nothing else—so what else was there to do to just live up to the role for the sake of not getting hurt ever again?
For the following years once more, from attending medical school up to starting in your residencies in your respective chosen specialties (in the same freaking hospital too, thanks to your rotten luck), you did a superb attempt in pushing all those romantic feelings away. Of course, from time to time, there were those annoying slip ups wherein you couldn’t help bringing a little malice with your time spent with Sunghoon, but nonetheless, you always managed to bring yourself to the right track every time afterwards, reminding yourself that it was pointless and being friends was the best option indeed.
“I like you.”
You couldn’t help but widen your eyes, the sip you were about to take for the iced coffee you were given being halted.
Jongseong self consciously put both of his hands inside the pockets of his white coat. “Uh, you don’t… you don’t really need to say anything back with what I just said. I just wanted to let you know.”
“You—” you pointed at Jongseong, also known as one of the most visually pleasing residents in your department— “you… you like, like, uh, me?” You pointed at yourself.
He nodded.
“Are you sure?”
He laughed, nodding again with more vigor. “I’m sure, ____.”
“Huh.” You huffed, blinking and continuing on doing that sip you postponed earlier. “Do you mean that as kind of like a ‘I’m a nice colleague’ to you kind of way or—”
“It’s more like a ‘I want to date you’ kind of way, honestly.”
“Oh.”
“Yep.”
“For real?”
He grinned at your disbelief and denial, your whole expression looking cute in his perception. “For real.”
“Wow.” You let out a breath, not being able to stop yourself from laughing. “That’s… I honestly—I really don’t know what to say.”
“You don’t have to say anything,” he assured you again with a playful light shove on your shoulder from where he was sitting next to you. “Like I said, I just wanted to let you know.”
“Okay.” You returned the gesture, inhaling and calming yourself down, as if you were the one who confessed between the both of you. “But thank you, I guess. I don’t know what made you see me in that kind of light but I appreciate it.”
“Then should I enumerate all the things I like about you or would that make you uncomfortable?” He was teasing.
“Save it for another date, please.” You played along, cheeks burning and chest thumping hard.
You were paged to the Emergency Department the second after you uttered that sentence, Jongseong encouraging you to leave quickly and saying that you didn’t need to act differently towards him from now on or feel pressured to feel a certain way because of his confession. And so before you sprinted to the direction of where you were needed, you told him your apologies for having to leave abruptly and your thanks too for his understanding—both for the current situation and your indecisiveness at the moment, waving and smiling in the kindest manner possible.
When you reached the elevators, your expression completely changed, what just commenced finally sinking in and the fact that when you hurriedly stepped inside the enclosed space, you blatantly didn’t notice Sunghoon already standing there, causing a sensation of strange guilt to wash over you as well.
“Where to?” he asked the second you were settled inside, and you glanced at him in mock nonchalance.
“ER.”
He pressed the designated floor button for it.
Silence. Just the sound of machines whirring and the soft ting! the elevator would make in the instances it stopped on a level until you noticed Sunghoon staring at you through the reflection of the metal doors, eventually turning his head sideways to set his eyes on your features properly as you tucked some strands of hair away from your face.
“Have you had dinner yet?” he questioned out of the blue.
You glanced at him again, your mind flying elsewhere. “Hm?”
“Dinner,” he repeated. “I was going to ask if you wanted to eat with me at the canteen later after your errand.”
“Ah.” You tried to act nonchalant again even though you still seemed out of breath as you answered. “Yeah, okay. Sounds good.”
“Great.” The doors opened, this time to where Sunghoon was supposed to go. “Call me when you’re hungry.”
You nodded, watching him coolly leave the elevator. “Sure,” you muttered.
You thought it was extremely ridiculous of you to be the person to feel strange around Sunghoon just because another guy professed their feelings for you. It wasn’t like you were cheating on the former for you to be wary, and it’s not like he cared too much about whether you were being pursued by someone else either. This wasn’t exactly the first time a guy tried to date you with Sunghoon’s knowledge, so you didn’t get why your brain had to go haywire for a quick second upon seeing the one man you never got over from minutes away from the moment Jongseong confessed.
Whatever the reason was, it persisted until the impromptu dinner plans with Sunghoon at the hospital cafeteria about two hours later.
You couldn’t bring yourself to act like your usual self around him. You might have reverted back to your high school self instead; the person who was far too shy and maybe unsure about her life choices to be able to act like the average human being. You made lame attempts of small talk (all done without the effort of maintaining eye contact) and did your best to not make it look like you just committed a big crime no one was supposed to know.
From the manner in which Sunghoon continued to stare at you across the table, taking slow bites of his meal, you figured he might be noticing your awkward movements regardless of your efforts.
You just didn’t expect him to utter his next lines to you after he drank from his water bottle.
“Did Jongseong already tell you that he likes you?”
You practically choked on the bite you were just about to swallow.
Sunghoon raised his eyebrows, your shock evidently sending him the message that Jongseong indeed has.
“How did you know that?” you exclaimed.
“He asked me before doing it.”
“He asked you?” You reiterated. “Why?”
“It’s not a secret how we’ve been friends since high school, ____.” He snorted. “He wanted to know what your reaction might be if he did confess.”
Heat started to crawl from your neck upwards little by little. “And what did you say?”
“I told him he could have a go with it. That you weren’t the type to avoid someone too if you didn’t feel the same.” He shrugged, gazing at you closely now with half of his body leaning forward. “So, he did confess, huh?”
You frowned and placed your chopsticks down on the tray. “Yeah.”
“Damn.”
“It was so nerve wracking.”
“How did he take the rejection then?”
“What?” You snapped your attention back to his face.
“When you rejected him. How did he take it?”
“I didn’t reject him.”
Sunghoon blinked at you. “What?” He appeared to be the surprised one all of the sudden.
“I…” you trailed as you weirdly looked at him, “I didn’t reject him. Did he tell you that I did?”
“No. I just assumed you did.”
“How come?”
“You never entertained anyone before, that’s why.” He scoffed in a knowing manner, back being leaned on the chair he was sitting on rather stiffly. “You’re actually thinking of dating Jongseong?”
You squinted at him. “Shouldn’t I? He’s a nice catch.”
“Is that all?”
“No.”
“What else then?”
“He’s—”
“Do you like him?” The canteen abruptly felt like an interrogation room.
You too leaned back on your chair at the tensed air surrounding you two. “What kind of question is that?”
“A normal one. It’s just a yes or no question, ____.”
“I could like him.”
“That’s more like a maybe.”
“Does it matter?” You retorted.
Sunghoon should have answered in the common fast speed he usually did—but at this instance, he actually hesitated and seemed like he even buckled, rendering him practically speechless.
Before he could have the chance to say what was on his mind about the subject of your discussion, his phone rang and he quickly took it out of his pocket, answering the call made by one of the nurses in his department telling him to kindly check on a patient that was currently complaining about a pain felt near their recent surgical site.
“Go,” you urged him as you returned to your meal. “I’ll take your tray with me when I’m done.”
He ended the call and stood up. “You’re on night shift, right?”
You nodded mindlessly despite the inquiry being another odd one from him.
“Me too,” he said.
“Noted.”
“I’m going to go now.”
“Okay.”
You met his gaze and Sunghoon frankly looked constipated; your chest in the meanwhile was once more acting up at the explanation your mind was giving you in regards to what reaction he was showing at this moment. Nevertheless, you were gathering all of your energy in acting like you truly didn’t care.
“Go ahead, Sunghoon,” you told him when he still refused to move.
He grumbled under his breath and picked up his water bottle from the table, leaving you without a last glance yet with the impression that you were supposed to finally read his mind this time around but failed.
For the first time ever, it seemed like he was the one who left looking like he was affected because of you more than you were because of him.
note. sorry for the cliffhanger ending hehe,, i still don’t know whether i should continue it or not so i just wanted to leave it like this for a while until i think of writing the continuation :>

I’ve had this sitting around for a while now and in honour of the comeback today I feel like I should finally share it with the world 🥺
so I want to watch squid game but I’m too scared to watch it alone and I have no one to watch it with so I decided to write about it … also idk if these plot points are right, I’m just guessing based on what I’ve seen on twitter
summary: you and your best friend heeseung decide to watch squid game, but when it makes you a little bit too scared, he’s a bit too affectionate with you, and you start to wonder if maybe your feelings for him are reciprocated ….
“What should we watch tonight?” You and Heeseung just finished a drama a few days ago, so now it’s time to find something new. Everything on Netflix sucks though.
“Squid Game?” He suggests, walking into the living room. “Soobin said it’s good.”
“Hell no.” You respond right away. “What does Soobin know anyway?”
“Are you scared, y/n?” Heeseung’s smirking at you.
“No,” you lie, “I just think something romantic might be nicer.” You gesture towards the TV, where you’re looking at the romcoms section.
Your best friend pretends to throw up, making you roll your eyes. You could never watch something overly romantic in his presence anyway. You would lose your mind.
When you met Heeseung in high school, you hated him. You were always top of your class, then suddenly this random boy shows up in junior year and takes your place. He immediately became your rival, even though you never really spoke to him.
But then, in senior year, you went through an extremely rough time. You’d planned on going to your dream university for ages, but they turned you down. That had never even been a possibility in your mind. With your grades and involvement in extra-curriculars, you figured you’d be a shoo-in.
Heeseung was the first to notice something was off. In every class you had together, you were the top 2 students. Usually you’d be tied for perfect, but sometimes your grades would be different by a few marks. After you were rejected, your grades dropped a little bit. You didn’t think anyone would notice.
Towards the end of first semester, you were in the library alone, trying to study for your chem exam. All your friends were discussing their college plans and acceptance letters. You’d excused yourself quickly, making up some random reason to leave. You wound up in the corner of the library, trying not to cry.
It was your spare period, so no one else was around. That’s why you were shocked when Heeseung showed up and asked to sit with you. You were so miserable and out of it that you just nodded.
After about 10 minutes of staring at your textbook, not absorbing anything, Heeseung asked if you were okay. You glanced at him, saying yes of course, but he asked again. He said he noticed you’d been off recently, and if there was something going on, you could talk to him.
You started crying immediately. Heeseung didn’t judge you when you told him what was on your mind. He just sat and listened while you vented. You couldn’t tell anyone close to you, but with him, it was okay. He knew what was it was like to have to be perfect all the time. You’d never even had a full conversation before, but suddenly, you felt some sort of affection towards him.
After that, the two of you started studying together every day. You had the same spare period, so it only made sense. And it gave you a good reason to get away from your friends. Hearing them going on and on about college was driving you insane. With Heeseung, you could get away from it for a while.
Over time, you and Heeseung began talking about other things, and found out you had a lot in common. Both of you had applied to some of the same universities. Your second choice was his first choice. As soon as you got your acceptance letters, you said yes right away. Without even thinking about it, the two of you had become best friends.
When you found out you’d be living in the same residence come September, you were happy for the first time in forever. Maybe your college experience wouldn’t be terrible after all.
You should have realized then that you had a crush on him. It took you another few months to clue in, and it’s been driving you crazy ever since. You’re in your second year of university now, but you can’t bring yourself to say anything. After all you’ve been through, you could never risk your friendship like that.
“I mean,” Heeseung says, grabbing the remote from you. “We could always play rock paper scissors and decide like that.”
“It’s fine,” you tell him, rolling your eyes. “We can watch your horror show, as long as I can stay the night.”
“Sure, I don’t mind sleeping on the couch.” You’re surprised he doesn’t make fun of you for being such a wimp. “Do you want a snack or something before I put it on?” You shake your head, so he presses play on the first episode.
It’s not so bad at first. The storyline is actually quite interesting. And when you glance over at Heeseung, he seems engrossed in the show. You can put up with it for his sake.
But then someone gets shot. You didn’t see that coming at all. The noise makes you jump.
“You good?” Heeseung asks, pausing it. You nod. You know he would turn it off in a heartbeat if you asked, but you’re okay for now.
He presses play again. A few seconds later, there’s a shot of a woman with blood on her face. He must hear you gasp, because he moves closer to you on the couch. You’re too focused on the screen to pay attention to him right now.
As the episode goes on, you become more interested in the story. A while later, there’s another scary scene. It’s not as bad as the last one, but you still reach for Heeseung’s hand without even thinking.
He lets you take it, intertwining his fingers with yours. Your brain gets frazzled for a minute, but you make sure to focus on the show, not him. If you think about how you’re touching Heeseung right now, you’ll go insane. You don’t think you’ve ever held hands before, but you push that thought out of your mind.
There’s another gory part later on, which makes both of you scared. Heeseung squeezes your hand, which makes you smile to yourself.
Towards the end, things get really violent. When you see blood onscreen, you immediately look away, turning towards Heeseung. Your forehead is resting against his shoulder. He tenses under you, pausing the show again.
“Should I turn it off?” He asks quietly, pulling away so he can look at you. “We can watch something else.”
You glance back at the TV. “How much is left?” He presses the button.
“2 minutes.”
“You can watch it,” you tell him. “I won’t look.”
As he presses play, you turn to face him on the couch. He takes his hand out of yours, wrapping his arm around you instead. He pulls you closer, so you wrap your arms around his neck, resting your head on his shoulder, looking away from the TV. You can hear screaming from the show, but you block it out, breathing in Heeseung instead. His hand on your back is extremely distracting anyway.
“It’s over,” he says a short while later. “You can look now.”
As you let go of him and move away, he keeps his arm around you.
“Should we watch episode 2?”
“Shut up,” he laughs. “I can watch it by myself. I won’t subject you to that again.”
“You got scared too.” You hit his chest, playfully.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” You roll your eyes, but you’re both smiling.
“Are you okay though?” He asks, his voice low. You suddenly realize he’s still touching you. You can feel him tracing circles on your back.
“I’m good,” you say, almost breathless. “I just can’t get that woman out of my mind.”
“Do you want to watch something else to take your mind off of it?” You shake your head. You know you won’t be able to pay attention, especially if Heeseung doesn’t let go of you.
“You can distract me.”
“Okay,” he replies. “Let’s do our business readings.”
“Nooooo.” Heeseung laughs at your reaction. “It’s like 1:30, my brain can’t do that right now.”
“Are you tired?”
“A little bit,” you admit. “I don’t want to go to sleep though. I want to stay up with you.”
The way his face lights up almost makes your heart stop. That seems like a pretty intense reaction for someone who just considers you a friend.
“You can see me tomorrow,” he tells you. “If you’re sleepy, you should sleep.”
“Oh my god Heeseung,” you say sarcastically. “You’re so smart.”
“I know.” You want to smack that smirk off his face.
“Are you tired?”
“By the time I get you into bed, I will be.” He lets go of you, getting up. “Come on.”
You follow him down the hall, to his room. You already have a toothbrush of your own from other times you’ve stayed the night, so he gets you a big shirt of his and some shorts to sleep in. While he grabs his things, you head to the bathroom to sort yourself out.
When you come back, Heeseung’s cleared his nightstand for you.
“I left my charger there,” he points to the power bar near his bed. “I thought you might need it.”
“Thanks.” You leave your clothes on top of his desk chair.
“I have to come back for a pillow, but after that I’ll leave you alone.”
You hesitate for a second, wondering if you should say what’s in your head. You decide to do it.
“Stay.” His eyes go wide. “Your bed’s a double, after all.”
“Are you sure?” You nod, sitting down and plugging your phone in to charge.
“The couch isn’t comfortable,” you say. “Don’t torture yourself like that.”
“You’re just scared to be on your own now, right?” You know he’s teasing you, but you can’t help but blush.
“You’re scared too!” Heeseung rolls his eyes, but he nods, agreeing to stay with you.
He disappears, going to get his things back from the living room. You tuck yourself in, scrolling through your phone while you wait for Heeseung to get into bed. You’ve thought about falling asleep next to him countless times, but now that it’s actually going to happen, you’re trying not to lose your cool. You can’t make it obvious that you’re in love with him. This is totally platonic.
But then again, he did hold you pretty tightly earlier. Maybe it’s not platonic after all.
You push that thought away as Heeseung comes back. He doesn’t say too much as he crawls into bed next to you. You try to focus on your phone anyway, you don’t want to risk saying something completely stupid.
After a few minutes, you ask if it’s okay to turn off the light.
“Go for it,” Heeseung says, laying down. “Goodnight y/n.”
“Goodnight.”
As soon as you close your eyes, you realize how truly tired you are. Maybe your best friend was onto something. It doesn’t take long for you to fall asleep.
However, your dream suddenly turns dark. You imagine yourself in Squid Game, seeing all that gore up close and firsthand. Thankfully, your mind wakes you up and your eyes snap open.
You sit up right away, trying to remember where you are.
Heeseung’s bed. Right.
You glance over at him, realizing you might have woken him up. When you see his eyes fluttering open, you curse. Mainly because you don’t want him to make fun of you for having a nightmare about this.
“y/n, what’s up?” He mumbles in the dark.
“Nothing.” Your voice is still shaking. You take a deep breath. “I just had a nightmare.”
“About Squid Game?”
“Yes.”
“Are you okay?” The way he says it makes your heart melt. His voice is so soft, and he sounds so concerned for you. You’re about to answer, when he places his hand on your arm. “Come here.”
You lay back down so you’re face to face with him.
“I’m sorry I woke you up.”
“It’s okay,” he responds. “What happened? Was it the blood?”
“I think so.” When you shudder, Heeseung pulls you towards him.
“Talk to me until you feel better.”
“Okay.”
Neither of you say anything. He’s looking directly into your eyes, and it’s making you slightly nervous. You wonder if he feels the same.
You’re close enough that you can hear him breathing. Subconsciously, your breaths have synced with his. It’s freakishly calming. And you’re hyperaware of how your legs are tangled together. You know this is dangerous, but you can’t look away and break the moment.
It would be so easy to just lean in and kiss him-
You don’t even realize you’ve lifted your hand until you feel Heeseung’s hair between your fingers. Thankfully, he hasn’t jumped away from you. You let your fingers trail down his neck before resting your hand against his chest.
“You okay?” His voice is so shaky. You’re glad it’s dark so he can’t see you blushing.
“Yes,” you tell him, trying to snap out of your thoughts. “I can’t fall asleep with you staring at me like that though.”
“Sorry.”
You awkwardly move your hand away, back to your side. Once you’ve dropped it, Heeseung rolls over so he’s facing away from you and the moment’s gone.
“Is that better?” He asks in the darkness.
“Sure.”
You roll over so you’re facing opposite directions. You close your eyes but you can’t get Heeseung’s face out of your mind. Part of you is convinced you should have just kissed him. Who knows when you’ll get another chance?
You’re drifting off to sleep when you feel him roll over again.
“y/n?” He sounds tired.
“Yes?”
“You were right.”
“About what?” You turn over so you can face him. He makes eye contact with you in the dark.
“I’m still thinking about stupid Squid Game.” You can’t help but laugh.
“My poor baby,” you whisper, running your hand through his hair again. You definitely notice the way he gets flustered. “What do you need?”
“I don’t know.” You roll your eyes. “Can I hold you?”
You swear your heart stops. There’s no way you could have heard him properly. He wouldn’t ask you something like that, you’re just friends. Friends don’t cuddle.
“Sorry-”
“No,” you cut him off. He raises his eyebrows. “I mean, yes. I just-”
“You’re so cute.”
“Don’t say that,” you respond, right away. “You’re making me feel things.”
“Sorry,” he says quietly. When you roll over, he wraps his arm around you. “Goodnight, y/n.”
“Goodnight,” you take his hand in yours. “For real this time.”
You can feel him laughing behind you as you close your eyes. The feeling of his chest rising and falling against your back helps you fall asleep again.
Just when you’re about to fall asleep for good, you feel Heeseung place a kiss on your shoulder. At first you think you’re imagining things, but then his arm tightens around you.
You smile to yourself, hoping you’ll dream of him.
=======
You don’t know what time it is when you wake up, and you’re too scared to check. Heeseung’s still holding onto you, his arm wrapped around your shoulders. You’re cuddled up to him as well, your head on his chest.
You still can’t believe this happened, but you’re so incredibly happy to even be in his arms. It’s better not to question it too much.
You close your eyes, pretending to be asleep. Both of you have class in the afternoon, so you’re in no rush to get out of bed. The longer you can stay here, the better.
A while later, you feel Heeseung wake up. You lift your head, opening your eyes so you can look at him. When he makes eye contact with you, he smiles.
“Hey y/n.” You’re so screwed. His morning voice is the most attractive thing you’ve ever heard. Yes, you’ve heard Heeseung sing before, but this has you even weaker.
“Hi.” It’s like you’ve forgotten every word in the English language. When he runs his fingers through your hair, you’re afraid you might spontaneously combust.
“What time is it?” You reach over him, grabbing your phone from the nightstand.
“11.” Heeseung groans, closing his eyes. “We’ve got an hour till we have to go listen to Prof Martin go on about solvency ratios.”
“Can we just stay here?” It’s the we that makes you blush.
“As much as I would like to,” you hesitate.
“Yes, y/n?” Heeseung sits up, so he’s right next to you. Without even thinking, you rest your head on his shoulder. His hand finds yours, interlocking your fingers. You’re tempted to kiss the back of his hand, but you push it out of your mind. You’re already in dangerous territory, it’s best not to make it worse.
“Solvency ratios.” His shoulder shakes as he laughs. “I don’t understand them, and I don’t want to be lost in class.”
“Are you asking me for help?” You pull away so you can look at him.
“God no,” he’s smirking at you. “I’m perfectly capable of figuring it out on my own.”
Heeseung takes your phone. “You only have 55 minutes.” He holds it up so you can see the time.
“Damn it.” You let go of him and take your phone back, getting out of bed. He watches as you head over to his closet to grab a sweater. “I’m stealing this,” you tell him, holding up one of his favourites. You expect him to say no, but he just nods.
“It’ll look cute on you.”
You ignore the warm feeling in your chest, grabbing your other clothes and heading to the bathroom.
Once you’re done, you go back to Heeseung’s room. He’s up as well, scrolling through his phone. When he notices you, he glances up.
“What if we skipped?” You freeze. “What?”
“Lee Heeseung,” you try to sound stern. “Are you feeling okay?”
“Yes.” He smiles. “We can teach ourselves. I don’t want to sit in a lecture hall for 3 hours.”
“Ugh,” you roll your eyes. “The whole point of skipping is to do something fun.”
“Studying with me isn’t fun?” You avoid his eyes. It's always insanely difficult to focus when you're studying with him.
His existence in itself is distracting. The way he fiddles with his pens, the way he hums under his breath, the way he looks up and smiles at you every once in a while, or the way he sits next to you when you’re really confused about something. Being so close to him makes you even more confused. How has he not noticed by now?
“Shut up.” You pick up your phone from the bed. “I’ll get us some food.”
“Take my keys.” You nod, grabbing those from his nightstand and stuffing them in your pocket.
“I’ll be back in ten.”
You take the stairs down to the lobby and head outside. There’s a locally owned coffee shop right next door to your building, so it doesn’t take you long to get there. Thankfully it’s not too busy. You order your usual drinks, and get some muffins for breakfast.
Not even ten minutes later, you’re back in Heeseung’s dorm, sitting on the floor eating. The two of you talk about the rest of your classes, making sure you’re caught up on coursework. He’s a little confused about something in your human rights class, so you decide to go over it together after you finish your business work.
After you eat, you clean up, while Heeseung runs back to his room to grab some stuff. When you’re finished, you sit on the couch, checking your phone again. Your business class should be starting in about 5 minutes. You’re so glad you aren’t going.
“Okay, let’s do this.” Heeseung drops his textbook on the coffee table. The sound makes both of you jump. “Whoops.”
“Do we have to?”
“We’re skipping class,” he says, opening his notebook. You would make fun of him for being so organized, but the two of you study the same way. You picked up each other’s habits in high school. “The least we could do is our readings.”
You groan, sliding down on the couch. “Can’t we just go back to sleep? Your bed is so comfy.”
“Stop it y/n.”
“Why can’t you be like Jake?” Heeseung flips through the textbook, trying to find the right page. “Remember when he did shots with me before our psych exam?”
“Right, because being drunk during an exam is a great idea.”
“First of all, it’s not my fault you’re a lightweight,” he throws his pen at you. It lands somewhere on the couch. “And second of all, Jake and I did better than you; maybe you could learn a thing or two.”
“What if I buy you dinner?” He asks. “Will you shut up and study with me then?” You take a second to think about it.
“Give me the stupid book.”
Sadly, you do have to ask Heeseung to explain solvency ratios to you. All the calculations make your head hurt, so he sits next to you on the couch and helps you work through the practice questions. At some point, you put your head on his shoulder, too lost in his explanation to realize you’re doing it.
You still feel nervous, but you feel a little bit better than yesterday. If anything, he seems flustered this time, sneaking glances at you when you’re taking notes. You pretend not to notice.
The two of you get through your work within an hour. You would never admit it, but you do appreciate how Heeseung helps keep you on task. If you were on your own, it would have taken you over twice as long.
“I don’t know why you hated me so much in high school,” he says, closing the textbook. “I’m such a good influence.”
“Hated?” You ask. “I never hated you.”
“Don’t lie y/n.” You smirk, putting his pens away.
“Maybe a little bit,” you admit. “But only at first. You grew on me after about a month.”
“Good.” Heeseung’s smiling at you.
“Wait, did you hate me?” He shakes his head right away.
“You were just really intimidating. Cute, but intimidating.”
“Cute how?” Heeseung’s eyes go wide. “You’ve said it like 5 times in the past 24 hours, you need to explain yourself.”
“Remember when we got our test results and you’d come over to me right away to compare?” You nod, cringing at your past self.
“Unfortunately.” You turn to face him on the couch, crossing your legs. He does the same thing.
“Your face would literally light up when you found out you did better than me.”
“I was so pretentious.” He shakes his head, smiling at you.
“It was cute.” You’re surprised he’s saying it again.
“I’m glad you think so.” You take his hand, interlacing your fingers again. It feels so natural at this point.
“I used to get questions wrong on purpose,” he says, avoiding your eyes.
“I’m sorry, what?” You blink.
“On every test, I would always make sure to answer one question wrong so that you’d get a higher mark than me.”
“You clown,” the two of you make eye contact. “Why would you do that?”
“I told you,” he squeezes your hand. "I like seeing you smile.”
“Idiot,” you whisper. “Why am I so in love with you?”
“You’re what?” Now Heeseung’s the one who looks shocked.
“Oh my god,” you gasp, pulling your hand away from his. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking.”
“Do you mean it?” He asks quietly.
“Yes.” You can’t look at him. You’ve thought about confessing before, but you never thought you would do it like this. You can’t believe how stupid you are.
While you’re scrambling to come up with an explanation, Heeseung reaches over to tuck your hair behind your ear. You turn your attention to him, but you can’t read his facial expression. You wish you knew what he was thinking.
“Heeseung,” you whisper. You’re inches away from each other.
“I really want to kiss you right now.”
You close the distance between the two of you. Before you even get the chance, Heeseung’s lips are on yours. You grab the collar of his shirt, holding him close.
It’s messy. You’ve been waiting for this for so long, you can’t hide your excitement. Judging by the way Heeseung’s kissing you back, you have a feeling it’s the same for him.
When you finally pull away, both of you are breathing heavily. When you see him smiling at you, you can’t help but pull him in for another kiss.
“In case you couldn’t tell,” he says, leaning back to look at you, “I’m in love with you too.”
“Am I dreaming?” You whisper, only partially joking. He laughs, placing a kiss on your forehead.
“Nope,” he takes your hands in his. “My love for you is very very real.”
“Love?” You can’t help but blush at the word.
“Yeah,” he smiles. “I love you y/n.”
“Say it again.” You’re so giddy. Your heart is pounding out of your chest and your mind is doing backflips, but you’ve never been more happy.
“Say what again?” Heeseung’s messing with you now.
“That you love me.”
“Oh,” he says, kissing your cheek. “I love you. I have for a long time.”
“How long?” You can’t help but ask.
“End of grade 11.” Your eyes go wide. “Yes, that long.” He looks amused. “How long has it been for you?”
“What do you mean?” You decide to wind him up too.
“How long have you loved me, y/n?” He sounds so cute, you can’t help but kiss him again.
“I never said I loved you.”
“But you do.” He says it like it’s a fact.
“I do,” you whisper, running a hand through his hair. “I love you so much.”
It’s so easy to say. Loving Heeseung is as natural as breathing at this point. You almost want to say that, but you don’t want to be too cheesy.
“Good.”
“Why didn’t we realize this sooner?” You ask.
“We’re idiots.” You can’t help but laugh at that. “But it’s okay. We have tons of time now.”
“Maybe you have a point.”
“Of course I do.” He buries his face in your neck. “The real question is where do we start?”
You pretend to think for a second. “Squid Game, episode 2.”
He lifts his head to look at you. “I really do love you, but not that much.” You laugh at his reaction.
“How about Squid Game, episode 2 in the background, but we just make out while it’s on?”
“That,” Heeseung gives you a small, quick kiss. “I can get on board with.”
warnings/notes: gn!reader SQUID GAME SPOILERS, squid game!au, mentions and implications of death, relationship between jw and reader could be platonic or romantic, it's up to you
a/n: squid game is all the hype rn and i loved the series so i decided to write something for it! this is based partly on some storylines in the actual tv show. let me know if you want a different squid game story for a different member!
you used to see him around at university. he was part of the taekwondo team, always lugging around a big duffel bag full of his athlete stuff.
he was also in your general history class. being a student-athlete, it was only natural that everyone gravitated towards him. he was, indeed, a popular one. that's why you were so nervous sitting next to him when you were assigned to be partners for a paper.
"let's just list down the different sections of the paper then divide it up," he had suggested with a smile, pointing at the rubric sheet in your hands. he took it from you gently, fingers brushing against yours.
he was cute up close. cuter than when you'd admire him from afar.
"jungwon," you had whispered out of nowhere. he eyed you quizzically, eyebrows raised. your eyes went wide when you realized what you just did.
"th-that's your name, right?" you said, trying to recover from the embarrassment. he chuckled and nodded, handing back the paper to you.
"yep, that's me."
you never got to talk to him again after that. you never worked together for another project, never got to say things to each other other than 'hi' and 'hello' when passing each other by.
you used to see him around at university. perfect, popular, and the last person you'd be seeing in a place like this.
"jungwon."
you were shaking, hands balled into fists as you stood straight as a board. of course, he didn't look back. he didn't even answer.
"green light."
jungwon had turned to you momentarily, eyes widening as his gaze settled on you.
"go, go!" you whisper-shouted, fingers digging into his back as you pushed him forward. the giant doll-like character was still in the midst of her green light phase, the remaining players around rushing past both of you.
"don't hide behind me," jungwon said, tone somewhat threatening as he jogged forward.
"red light."
you squeezed your eyes shut as you froze, gunshots ringing one after the other as more players were eliminated. a loud thud was heard next to you and you frantically opened your eyes, hoping it wasn't jungwon.
you breathed a sigh of relief as his tall figure still towered in front of you, his shoulders were tense and stance wide as he steadied himself in front of the giant character's gaze.
"green light."
jungwon reached back and pulled on your hand, pushing you forward in front of him. you protested, finding yourself completely exposed to the character's motion sensors.
"you'll thank me later once you cross the line first," jungwon said through gritted teeth, nudging you forward even more.
---
"can i get a thank you for what i did earlier?"
you had looked up to see jungwon approaching you, his own dinner in his hands. he settled on the floor beside you as he unpacked his food.
"what should i be thanking you for? you broke my strategy," you quipped, taking a bite out of your sandwich.
"almost all the people behind me died," jungwon said matter-of-factly. "if i hadn't let you go first, you would have been one of them."
you sat in silence to ponder on that for a bit.
"i would have just run faster during green light," you said quietly. jungwon laughed, nudging you with his elbow.
"you're a funny one, aren't you? i kinda wish we could have been friends in university," jungwon wondered out loud.
"we can be friends now," you suggested, reaching your hand out to him. jungwon flashed you a bright smile, dimples on full display.
he took your hand in his, shaking it firmly.
"friends, it is."
---
"please, no, it's just a small break, please-"
you flinched, the gunshot a little too close to you for your liking. despite this, you continued on, breathing heavily as you poked and scraped away at the caramelized sugar in your hands.
you were frantic. there were barely two minutes left and you were only halfway through.
you felt a soft kick on your leg just as a figure was about to pass you by. you looked up to see it was jungwon.
"lighter," jungwon mouthed as he dropped something at your feet. you scrambled to hide it from the guards, grabbing it immediately before encasing it in your fist.
you took a peek and saw that it was, indeed, a lighter. you scanned the area and saw the space under the slide was empty. you hurriedly crawled towards the plaything, making sure the object in your hands was hidden to the red-suited guards.
that day, thanks to jungwon, you made it with only five seconds to spare.
---
"where did you get it?"
"where did i get what?" jungwon asked as the two of you lounged around in the dormitory. the rest of the players were in their own subdued conversations, completely unaware of the way the two of you passed the previous game.
"the lighter," you whispered. the two of you were seated on the floor against some beds, yours and jungwon's shoulders almost touching. he snickered, holding his hand out.
"i'll tell you if you give it back," jungwon said. you gave him a look before eyeing the other players around you. you reached into your pocket and discreetly handed it back to him.
"player 420 brought it and dropped it like a dumbass," jungwon explained, pointing at a player across the room.
your eyes landed on a man conversing with two other male players.
player 420 had chiseled features and dark hair in an undercut. he was talking to player 115 and player 128, both having the same defined features and tall stature as 420.
definitely some of the scarier players you've seen.
"they'd kill you if they found out you stole from them," you said lowly. jungwon just laughed.
"i'd like to see them try," jungwon comments.
"they can't take me away from you just like that."
---
"...legs wide, face forward, and lean back as far as you can. remember, tug-o-war is about intelligence and not just strength."
jungwon's words rang in your ear as you forced all your strength through your body and into the rope in your hands. your teammates' grunts of effort were nearly drowned out by the ringing in your ears. you've never done anything as exhausting as this. but, you were fighting for your life. you had no choice.
just a little more.
"pull, now!" jungwon yelled from the front and the rest of the team complied, syncing all of your movements as you pulled the other team closer to the edge.
cries of despair from the other side reached your ears and you knew you shouldn't have felt anything but remorse, but the twinge of hope in your heart was too strong to ignore. it was every man for himself. there was no time to feel sorry for one another.
that twinge of hope turned into a bigger, warmer feeling of relief as you felt the blade cut the rope in half. your team fell into a tired heap, panting and heaving from the effort.
as your team filed back into the elevator, jungwon took your hand in his and squeezed. all you could do was squeeze back weakly.
"are you okay?" you asked as you reenter the dormitory, hand still held tightly in jungwon's.
"yeah," jungwon replied. "but, for a moment i thought we were gonna die."
you gave jungwon a long, hard look. he looked up from the floor and into your eyes.
"all i could think of was...'i have to keep ______ alive.'"
you felt tears well up in your eyes, but you blinked them away.
"you're real funny, jungwon," you said as you lightly punched his arm.
"you're the only person i know in here," jungwon continued. "i want you to survive."
"what about yourself?" you asked.
jungwon just smiled.
---
"you'll be my partner, right?" jungwon asked as the instructions were dealt. you immediately nod, intertwining your fingers with his.
the game setup brought a wave of nostalgia over you. the village looked exactly like the place you grew up in. it gripped at your heart almost painfully.
however, nothing could compare to the stab of pain that came when you heard the full mechanics of the game.
the ringing in your ears came back. your whole body seemed to have turned into jelly. jungwon had to prop you up to keep you from falling to your knees.
"let's just talk for a bit," jungwon suggested after he had calmed you down. "you can tell me about your family and your hobbies and places you want to go to."
you felt a lump in your throat as you thought about your family.
"i don't wanna talk about my family," you had replied as the two of you settled on the front steps of one of the fake houses.
"hobbies, then?" jungwon asked, gripping at your hand.
"that's boring."
"then, tell me where you wanna go," jungwon insisted. "where would you travel if you won all that money?"
there was a long pause.
"i wanna go to jeju," you had whispered. you turned to jungwon, eyes misty.
"let's go to jeju together."
and once again, jungwon had only smiled.
---
20 minutes had already passed. 20 minutes of talking and pouring your heart out to jungwon and him doing the same to you. it was 20 minutes of just you and him. him and you. two people lost in their own world.
this past week was the most trying week of your life, but all that was made bearable because of jungwon. looking at him now, in the present, you realize just how much you've grown attached to him.
you know it's strange. you barely knew each other before all this, but the bond you build through numerous life and death situations is different. for some reason, time doesn't matter.
you wonder if he feels the same way, too.
"hey," jungwon calls out. he takes his hand out of yours before gently cradling your face against his palms. he turns you so you can face him.
"we don't have much time left," jungwon says quietly. you shake your head, tears springing up in your eyes once again.
"i can't play," you resist, shaking your head and holding onto jungwon's wrists.
"______, if we don't play, both of us will die," jungwon says through gritted teeth. his eyes are wide with fear, mirroring you. you look away as you break down, the tears finally spilling over.
"w-what game are we gonna play?" you say through your tears. jungwon stands up and offers his hand to you. you take it hesitantly, letting him pull you up.
"what if...," jungwon begins, eyes flitting to the side as he thinks of what to play.
"we see who can throw the marble closest to the wall?" jungwon finishes, pointing at the wall next to the steps you were just sitting on.
"oh," is all you can say at this point, too numb to think of anything else.
"come on, you go first," jungwon suggests, nudging the bag of marbles in your hand. "winner gets to take all the other's marbles."
a heavy feeling settles in your chest as you face the wall. you begrudgingly take a marble out of the bag, rolling it between your fingers for a few seconds.
"jungwon," you begin.
"hm?"
"i'll see you in jeju, okay?"
jungwon laughs, reaching up to pinch your cheek.
"okay."
you take a deep breath before throwing the marble towards the wall. you throw a little too hard and it bounces off the concrete and rolls away. your heart sinks as you watch your marble come to a stop a few inches away from your target.
"that's not bad," jungwon encourages. he gives you a big smile before taking out a marble of his own.
a few moments pass with jungwon staring forward at the wall, as if lost in thought. you watch him worriedly, aware of the time that's passing. you're about to say something but then, jungwon throws.
or more appropriately, jungwon drops the marble, barely putting any power in his arm.
you look on, horrified, as jungwon's marble lands near his feet, its shiny exterior taunting you.
"you asshole," you mutter. you shove jungwon away from you, anger and fear bubbling up inside you. he drops his bag of marbles, some of it spilling out and rolling away.
"why did you do that?!" you ask through tears as you hit jungwon on the chest repeatedly. jungwon grabs at your wrists to stop you, but you struggle against his grip.
"throw it again! throw it like you mean it, jungwon!" you yell, fighting against him as he tries to keep you at arms' length.
"i meant it, ______," jungwon says quietly. "i meant it when i said i have to keep you alive."
"you're so full of shit, yang jungwon!" you nearly scream. "take another throw!"
"even if i did, i'd still lose on purpose for you! i'd lose on purpose again and again just to see you live!" jungwon bellows, shaking you violently.
you stop struggling, going limp in jungwon's arms as he pulls you close to him.
"win for the both of us, okay?" jungwon whispers in your ear. you sob against his shoulder as you cling onto him, fingers gripping at his clothes as you try to keep him close.

"go to the yule ball with me."
your eyes go wide at the voice speaking up from beside you. it was familiar to you. of course it was. how could you miss the deep lilt of park sunghoon's voice?
"excuse me, what?" you ask, turning your head towards his amused expression. the transfiguration classroom is laid out with students from opposite houses sitting together, and you just so happen to be seated next to the most popular slytherin in your year.
"i don't have anyone to go with," sunghoon explains.
"you have dozens of people throwing themselves at your feet just for a chance to go to the yule ball with you," you scoff, scribbling away at the parchment in front of you. your professor's voice is nearly drowned out by the wild beating of your heart.
"i'm not interested," sunghoon deadpans. he nudges your side with his elbow, a playful grin on his face.
"come on. be my date," sunghoon offers once more. you shake your head, a laugh bubbling up from your chest.
"i don't think so," you reject. "i barely know you. we don't even talk outside of the times when you ask me for answers during tests."
sunghoon chuckles at this as he crosses his arms. he stares at you for a good minute and you can feel your cheeks burn at the intensity of his gaze.
what is this guy's deal?
"you're going to the yule ball with me," sunghoon declares, turning away finally.
---
"have you decided what color you'll be wearing?" sunghoon asks as he slides into the seat next to you the following day. you look at him, confused.
"what?"
sunghoon smiles at you. "for the yule ball."
your forehead creases at this. what on earth is this guy talking about?
"are you asking if i've picked out an outfit already?" you ask plainly. sunghoon nods, reaching over to fiddle with some of the stuff on your desk. you make a sound of annoyance before swatting his hand away.
"we have to match, you know," sunghoon points out. he raises his eyebrows at you expectantly. your jaw hangs open as you realize what sunghoon is implying.
he's still trying to convince you to go with him?
"i'm not going with you, sunghoon," you say with an air of finality, but your ears still burn at the thought.
going to the yule ball with park sunghoon? it would be a dream come true. but, still. he's a slytherin and you're a hufflepuff. for all you know, this could be some sick prank.
"and why not?" sunghoon asks, leaning in close. you turn to him and nearly squeak at the proximity of your faces. for sure the other students can see what's going on, but the smell of sunghoon's perfume overpowers your senses and you're left there, gaping at his handsome face.
"again, we barely know each other," you reply in a whisper. sunghoon smirks at this before leaning back.
"we have lots of time to get to know each other, _______."
"besides," sunghoon continues.
"i already know for a fact that i make you nervous," he says with a chuckle.
---
"lavender."
it's sunghoon's turn to look at you with confusion, his eyebrow raised in question.
"i'm wearing lavender," you clarify with a sigh. you open your transfiguration book, ready to take more notes for the day's class, but your attention is stuck in the way sunghoon grins from ear to ear. you try to suppress your own smile as you watch him through the corner of your eye.
"so, maybe a deep gray suit and lavender tie would do the trick," sunghoon muses, shuffling mindlessly through his own stuff, the smile never faltering from his face.
"hm, maybe," you reply, finally turning towards him with a smile of your own.
"but, that doesn't mean i'm going with you," you remind him with a pointed look. sunghoon just laughs before biting on his lower lip, the same look of amusement back in his eyes.
"of course, you aren't," is all he says.
---
"i got my suit mailed to me this past weekend," sunghoon says out of the blue one day as you're finishing a seatwork. you eye him questioningly, a little unsure once again about what he's on about.
"it's gray with a lavender tie," sunghoon adds with a smile. you laugh in disbelief, unable to comprehend what exactly is going on.
"you're really adamant about bringing me to the yule ball, aren't you?" you ask, trying to deflect from the fact that a million butterflies have now just been let loose in your stomach.
"come on, please?" sunghoon pleads, lips forming into a pout.
"but, why?"
"because you're the only person who doesn't want me for my looks," sunghoon says, crossing his arms.
"i don't want you at all, park," you joke, playfully punching his arm. he giggles at this, attracting the attention of your professor who abruptly shushes the both of you.
"sure, you don't."
"i really don't."
sunghoon just smiles, reaching over to pinch your cheek.
"see you at the yule ball, _______."
---
"who are you even going with?" your friend, sieun asks as the two of you descend the stairs towards the great hall.
"i don't know," you answer, smoothing down the material of your outfit. the glitter details shine in the candlelight, giving you a sparkling aura that has everyone doing a double-take.
"you don't know?" sieun questions in disbelief. just then, a tall figure emerges from the crowd gathered at the foot of the stairs, a deep gray suit and a lavender tie, bright under the same candlelight that illuminated your own outfit.
you meet sunghoon's eyes through the throng of people and he immediately smiles. he motions with his head for you to come down and after shooting sieun an apologetic look (to which she just rolls her eyes goodnaturedly), you make your way down the remainder of the stairs.
"you're still not going with me?" sunghoon asks, gently taking your hand in his. you let him do so, stomach flipping at the warmth from his fingers.
"not in a million years," you answer with a laugh. sunghoon beams at this before guiding you to the entrance of the great hall.
you've known jake your whole life. finding out you're both wizards despite having muggle parents just made your relationship stronger. but, when an arrogant pureblood stomps all over your dignity, jake doesn't care about the names he's called. he vowed to protect you and that's what he'll do

"you're going on a date with who?"
"seojun from slytherin," you say defensively, giving jake a look. "you know, the super popular one, other than park sunghoon, of course."
jake shakes his head. "no, absolutely not. you do know how dangerous this is, right?"
"what do you mean? you think i'm incapable of pulling someone like jeon seojun?" you ask, quirking an eyebrow in jake's direction. the boy just exhales, eyes flitting to the ceiling of the great hall.
jake has situated himself across from you at the hufflepuff table, taking advantage of the meager number of students sitting at breakfast. what was supposed to be a relaxed morning chat turned into a mini bickering session.
"that's not what i meant, ______. you know how those slytherin guys are. they're all the same," jake argues.
"they are not. there are nice ones in my potions class," you counter, crossing your arms in defiance.
"yeah, but they're not the super popular ones like those seojun and sunghoon guys."
"you're judging him too quick," you say dismissively. "seojun is extremely sweet and asked me out in the cutest way possible."
"he asked me for help at the library for one of our potions assignments and he got all shy when he asked if i'd agree to tutor him," you gush, missing the way jake's eyes rolled. "then he asked me out on a date as a way to make it up to me. he said he'd take me out to do something nice like sweets shopping at honeydukes."
"boring," jake says, waving his hand dismissively.
"you're just jealous because you don't have the guts to ask lia out," you tease, sticking your tongue out at him. just as you say this, the same crescent-eyed, apple-cheeked lia passes by behind jake.
"hey, _____! hi, jake!" lia greets before stalking off further down the hufflepuff table.
jake turns to you, a deep red blush spreading over his face.
"loser," you joke, earning a look from jake.
"just, be careful with guys like seojun. he isn't famous for nothing."
---
you really should have listened to jake.
if you had, you wouldn't be standing out in the chilly autumn air, crying your eyes out.
you had dressed up nice, wanting to impress seojun as much as you can. you did your hair perfectly, same with your makeup. all you had to do after getting ready was to wait by the hill for seojun so the two of you could walk to hogsmeade together.
you saw seojun, that's for sure.
with his friends, laughing all rambunctiously.
"hey, i thought we were going to hogsmeade together?" you had asked, stopping seojun in his tracks. the fact that you had to do this meant he didn't even see you standing there in the first place.
"what?" seojun asked, eyebrows pinched together as he surveyed you. his eyes lit up as if remembering who you were.
"oh, you're the hufflepuff that helped me with potions," seojun chuckled. "look, for a mudblood, you're actually really pretty. but, let's just forget about our "date", shall we?"
those words shouldn't have hurt as much as they did, but...
they did.
mudblood.
the word rang in your ears as you tear up, alone on the hill, with no one to comfort you. perhaps, it's time for you to get back to the comforts of your dorm. screw hogsmeade. screw seojun.
"_______?"
you turn around to see jake climbing the hill, a concerned look on his face. one glance at your tear-stained cheeks had him rushing to your side, fallen leaves crunching under his boots.
"why are you crying? what happened?" jake asks frantically, pulling you into a hug.
"don't tell me...," jake begins, words trailing off after a moment.
"you were right," you sob into his shoulder. you don't even know why you're crying so hard. maybe it's because of the illusion of seojun shattering right before your eyes. maybe it's the slur. maybe it's just you, tired and hopeless about romance.
"i get asked out for the first time, by seojun no less, and he calls me a fucking mudblood." you practically spit the word out as you recall exactly what he said.
"he did what?" jake asks, pulling away. his eyes darken as he stares at hogsmeade in the distance. his grip on your shoulders tighten and you can see anger starting to build on his features.
"jake, don't," you start, but jake's already storming off down the other side of the hill.
"jake! don't make a scene at hogsmeade, please," you practically beg, heels skidding against the earth as you try to halt jake in his steps.
"jake!"
jake seems to snap out of it, eyes clearing and softening as he looks back at you. he sighs, pulling you in for another hug.
"i promised you the day we both got our hogwarts letters that i'd protect you," jake murmured against your hair.
"yes, but i don't need you starting fights for me," you say, cuddling up closer to jake's firm chest. you can hear his heartbeat and it stirs up something strange in you.
yeah, you and jake have been close. but, you've never been this intimate before.
"i'd start a war for you," jake blurts out and you freeze in his arms. he'd do what?
"you don't mean that," you say, burying your face in his shirt.
"i do," jake answers, stroking your hair soothingly. he stops and pulls away for a second, staring right into your still reddish eyes. he gives a little laugh before reaching up to boop your nose.
"you're cute when you cry," jake observes, eyes trailing all over your features. you look away shyly, not used to him being this close to you.
"jake, let's just go back," you suggest, trying to change the subject.
thankfully, jake agrees, taking your hand in his as the two of you walk back towards the castle.
"you know, i'm still jumping that motherfucker the next time i see him," jake speaks up as you approach the courtyard some minutes later. "i don't care if he calls me a mudblood, too. that's better than being an asshole like him."
you shake your head, lightly bumping your shoulder into jake's as a warning. jake laughs, leaning down quickly to plant a kiss on your cheek. you stare up at him, dumbfounded.
"sorry," jake says with a sheepish smile. "just felt like doing that."
you slowly turn away, trying to hide the smile that's spreading on your lips, but jake sees it anyway and he giggles, pulling you to his side by your waist.
"go out with me instead," jake declares. you know he's not asking.
being quidditch captains from the rival houses meant the pressure was on for you and heeseung during the final match of the fall semester. but, when you get into an accident, heeseung is the one that brings you to the infirmary and makes sure you're okay.
a/n: second installment of my hogwarts series! reblogs and tags are always highly encouraged and appreciated <3
you and heeseung had always been rivals, both on and off the quidditch field.
your slytherin pride always clashed with his brash gryffindor confidence, especially in charms when both of you competed to see who could get the spell down the fastest. this kind of tension only multiplied when quidditch is involved.
being one of gryffindor's beaters, heeseung would always target you, of all people. your chaser reflexes proved valuable since you've had one too many close calls with those fucking bludgers. you'd give him a dirty look after every game, aware of his antics despite his smug attempt at trying to act innocent.
in conclusion, you and heeseung were better off being enemies sworn to hate each other. nothing more.
but, when someone from your house thought it would be funny to curse a bludger, sending it flying your way and you crashing down from your broom, it was heeseung who whizzed past everyone, grabbing you just in time before you hit the ground. he grunted as he descended down, arm tight around your waist, his broomstick struggling just as much as he was.
once you were safe on the ground, the pain of where the bludger hit you finally caught up to you. you clutched at your arm, the adrenaline slowly fading. you're sure you've broken a bone.
heeseung peered at you cautiously, but you didn't pay him any mind, the pain too blinding.
"i'll bring you to the infirmary," heeseung declared, scooping you up into his arms and walking off towards the direction of the castle.
and so, here you are, laying in bed, the bitter taste of bone-mending medicine sitting on your tongue. heeseung stands at the foot of your bed, hovering around like a concerned but frightened bird.
"you can sit down, you know," you call out to him, annoyed at his constant pacing. heeseung hesitates for a moment before he approaches the stool beside your bed. he takes a seat, eyes shifting nervously around.
"you didn't seem to be this scared when you literally swept me off my feet back at the field," you joke, an easy smile playing on your face. from this angle, heeseung was quite...handsome.
extremely handsome.
"i didn't know what came over me," heeseung admits. "i guess i didn't want people to think it was me."
"but, it wasn't you. it was some imbecile from slytherin."
heeseung nods, finally looking up at you. "yeah. but, still."
"i guess this is my way of finding an excuse to talk to you," heeseung continues. "i...can we, you know, stop fighting?"
you chuckle, reaching over with your uninjured arm to punch his thigh lightly.
"you like me or something?" you ask, amused. heeseung just smirks, looking away.
"maybe."
you stare wide-eyed at the boy. did he just admit to liking you? since when?
"you can't be serious right now," you say, laughing nervously. "why would you-"
"why would i not? you're always competing with me. we have the same grades. we like the same sport. we both get the same satisfaction at seeing the other lose. we're not so different if you think about it," heeseung points out, crossing his arms.
you can't help but laugh again.
because he's absolutely right.
"i guess that makes sense," you say, scratching at a phantom itch on your cheek.
"so, um, hogsmeade this weekend?" heeseung asks. you look at him and he looks back, and for a few seconds you just stare. he smiles and you can't help the grin on your face.
"sure. your treat, though," you agree, laughing at the way heeseung groans.
"fine, fine," heeseung concedes. he cautiously reaches his hand out, tentatively placing it on your own. you blush, your bottom lip catching between your teeth.
"i'm even beating you at flirting," heeseung says smugly, earning an eye roll from you.
"when my arm heals, i'll make sure you're blushing seven different shades of red, lee."
