Chapter 1: Dropping the Mask
The sun hung lazily in the clear blue sky outside the U.A. dorms, casting warm golden light across the common room. No villain attacks. No emergency drills. No crisis demanding immediate hero intervention. Just⌠peace.
And Izuku Midoriya was bored out of his goddamn mind.
He sprawled across the common room couch with all the grace of a ragdoll, one leg thrown over the armrest, his phone dangling from his fingers. The innocent, bright-eyed expression he usually wore had melted away, replaced by something sharper, more real. His green eyes held an edge that wouldâve shocked most of his classmates.
Bakugou Katsuki sat in the armchair nearby, his own mask of constant aggression relaxed into something more comfortable. Heâd been watching Izuku for the past ten minutes, recognizing the signs. Theyâd known each other too long for Bakugou not to notice when his childhood friend was reaching a breaking point.
âKacchan,â Izuku said, his voice lacking its usual cheerful lilt. âIâm bored.â
Bakugou snorted, a smirk tugging at his lips. âYeah? Getting tired of the whole âsweet innocent Dekuâ routine?â
âYou have no idea.â Izuku sat up, running a hand through his green curls with obvious frustration. âDo you know how exhausting it is? The stammering, the crying, the constant analysis that everyone thinks is âso cute.â Iâm tired of acting.â
âThen stop.â
The simple statement hung in the air between them. Izukuâs eyes snapped to Bakugouâs face, searching for somethingâpermission, maybe, or understanding.
Bakugou leaned forward, elbows on his knees. âIâm serious. Weâre not kids anymore, Izuku. I already apologized for all that shit I put you through. Weâve had each otherâs backs for months now. The real you? Thatâs the person Iâm actually friends with. Not the mask you wear for everyone else.â
A slow smile spread across Izukuâs face, and it was nothing like his usual bright, heroic grin. This one was sharp, dangerous, exciting. âYou know what? Youâre right.â He pulled out his phone, fingers flying across the screen. âLetâs make this interesting. Letâs invite Tenko and the League to our group chat.â
âNow youâre talking.â Bakugouâs grin matched his. âBut you know what this means, right? If you reveal this, thereâs no turning back.â
âGood. Acting soft is annoying as hell.â
âWhatâs annoying as hell?â
Both of them looked up to find Todoroki Shouto standing in the doorway, heterochromatic eyes fixed on them with unusual intensity. He stepped into the room, closing the door behind him with a soft click.
âThe masks we wear,â Izuku said simply, not bothering to put his fake personality back on. Not for Todoroki. Not anymore.
Todoroki was quiet for a moment, then moved to sit on the couch beside Izuku. âSo youâre giving up the act in class?â
âItâs getting tired, playing the mask all the time.â Izuku shrugged, something calculating entering his expression. âWhat about you, Shouto? Still pretending you hate your brother and your father?â
The temperature in the room dropped slightly, frost creeping across Todorokiâs right side before he controlled it. But when he spoke, his voice was steady. âNo. I think Iâm done with that too.â He looked directly at Izuku. âI know Dabi is Touya. Iâve known for a while.â
Bakugou let out a low whistle.
âHe has these soft eyes when he looks at me,â Todoroki continued, his usual monotone cracking slightly with genuine emotion. âEven when heâs trying to fight me, but he never actually tries to fight me. He always picks other teammates instead. Heâs protecting me, even now. And Iâm tired of pretending I donât see it.â
The door burst openâor rather, it was opened with perfect, precise timing by Iida Tenya, who stepped through with his characteristic rigid posture. But there was something different in his eyes. Something wild barely contained beneath his proper exterior.
âSo our fronts are all coming out tonight?â Iida asked, pushing his glasses up his nose. The gesture was the same, but the energy behind it was completely different.
Izuku blinked. âTenya? You too?â
âMe too.â Iida sat down in the remaining chair, and for the first time since any of them had known him, he slouched. Actually slouched. âWhat, did you think I enjoyed being the tame one all the time?â
âI meanââ
âBeing the class president and acting responsible every second of every day isnât my fucking style,â Iida said, and the curse word sounded almost foreign coming from his mouth. Almost, but not quite. âI like cursing. I always laugh at Katsukiâs insults, but I canât show it in class. Do you know how hard it is not to crack up when he calls someone âextrasâ with that ridiculous scowl?â
Bakugou looked personally offended. âMy scowl is not ridiculous, Four Eyes.â
âIt absolutely is, Explosion Boy.â
Izuku started laughing, and it wasnât his usual nervous giggle. This was genuine, unrestrained laughter that made his eyes crinkle at the corners. âOkay, okay. This is happening. Weâre really doing this.â
He pulled up his phone again, his fingers hovering over the screen. Then he looked up at his friendsâhis real friends, the ones who apparently had been wearing masks just like him.
âLetâs have some fun now,â Izuku said, and his smile was absolutely wicked. âGo wild, you three. Iâll inform Shinsou and Denki, but Iâm guessing they overheard us anyway.â
As if on cue, purple hair appeared over the back of the couch, followed by Shinsou Hitoshiâs tired but amused face. âBeen here the whole time. Do you people not notice a six-foot insomniac sitting in the corner?â
âDude, FINALLY!â Kaminari Denkiâs head popped up from behind the other couch, where heâd apparently been lying on the floor. âIâve been waiting for you guys to crack for MONTHS! Do you know how hard it is to keep my mouth shut when I know Midoriya has a brother in the League? Or that Todoroki and Dabi are definitely related and having weird complicated sibling moments during fights?â
âHow did youââ Todoroki started.
âIâm not as dumb as I pretend to be,â Denki said cheerfully, vaulting over the couch to join them. âThe dunce act is useful. People tell you things when they think you wonât understand.â
Shinsou nodded slowly. âAnd Iâm in General Education, remember? Nobody watches the support course kid who got transferred. I see everything.â
Izuku looked around at the groupâat Bakugouâs fierce grin, at Todorokiâs slowly melting ice facade, at Iidaâs uncharacteristic slouch, at Denkiâs sharp intelligence finally showing through, at Shinsouâs knowing smirk.
âAlright then,â he said, opening a new group chat on his phone. âLetâs invite my brother and his friends to talk. Itâs time we stopped pretending to be heroes and villains and started being honest about what we actually are.â
âAnd whatâs that?â Bakugou asked, though his grin suggested he already knew the answer.
Izukuâs fingers flew across his keyboard as he typed out a message to a number only he had. âPeople who are tired of playing by rules that donât make sense. People who are tired of wearing masks. People who want something real.â
He hit send.
[Unknown Number]: Hey Tenko. Miss me?
[Unknown Number]: Got some friends who want to meet the infamous League of Villains.
[Unknown Number]: Interested?
The response came almost immediately.
[Crusty Big Bro]: âŚIzuku? Is that really you?
[Crusty Big Bro]: Are you FINALLY done playing hero?
[Unknown Number]: Not done. Just done pretending.
[Unknown Number]: Thereâs a difference.
[Crusty Big Bro]: Iâm listening.
Izuku looked up at his friends, at the anticipation and excitement and relief on their faces. Relief that they didnât have to pretend anymore. Relief that they werenât alone.
âItâs on,â he said simply. âHope youâre all ready for this.â
Bakugou cracked his knuckles, small explosions popping in his palms. âBeen ready.â
Todorokiâs left side ignited with flames, perfectly controlled. âMe too.â
Iida adjusted his glasses, a manic edge to his smile. âAbsolutely.â
Denkiâs electricity crackled across his fingertips. âHell yes.â
Shinsou just smirked. âTook you long enough.â
Outside, the sun continued to shine on U.A.âs peaceful Sunday afternoon. But inside the dorms, six students prepared to shatter every expectation anyone had ever placed on them.
The masks were coming off.
And nobody was going to see it coming.
