initially, i conceptualised that in nessa's companion verse during the siege of weisshaupt rook would be presented with the opportunity to assist one of two battalions of wardens in defending the fortress, ultimately leading to the survival or sacrifice of owen o'rinn— and if he was killed, the hardening of nessa.

what i didn't ever really mention is that it would also be theoretically possible for rook to assist neither group and that it would 100% lead to some type of confrontation with nessa, because she has never in her life not stopped to help anyone in need, let alone her fellow wardens, no matter what kind of time-crunch or orders she is under.

actually, if you make this choice, ness is probably gonna get into it with you right there with weisshaupt falling down around you and then stalk off all stubbornness and rage to help whoever she can. she'll probably meet up with you later, but you're going to have one hell of a conversation on your hands if she does.

i've been thinking that this is probably worse than rook choosing to help the group of wardens that doesn't include owen, thus leading to his death. rook and ness could probably, eventually, come back from that. but if rook chooses to help nobody, regardless of how important and pressing their own aims are, nessa can't look past that. she would likely come back and still contribute to defeating e&g, but her relationship with rook would be shot to hell.

i just think that ness would have been a good lady of brierleath, if she'd ever married ronan... but she would have sucked at ever interacting with the rest of ferelden's nobility and that's a fact.

what has been your favorite part of developing nessa as a character? what’s changed about her? what’s stayed the same?

i can't lie, i've enjoyed the fact that when i talk about her i'm not just speaking into the endless void (unlike my other muses lol). in seriousness, i've particularly enjoyed developing her from a character who was simply based around seeking her purpose, and into someone who is much more complex in how that mindset impacts her. i also just always really, really enjoy fleshing out the extended world around my muses in terms of supporting characters and background, and nessa has been no different.

i'm not sure i can really say there's been any fundamental changes since i've thought her up, other than the night i first came up with the idea that she'd escaped a betrothal it was going to be a classic scenario of her being engaged to some terrible guy, but by the next morning i'd come up with the concept of ronan, so. i guess i also went into this believing she'd be a very happy-go-lucky muse with no trauma, but it turns out she has all sorts of issues, if you want to call that something i consciously changed, but maybe it was more just getting to know nessa better over time.
