She smiled at him, “You’re most certainly welcome, Nugget." The nickname came out of her mouth before she knew it and her cheeks went red: “Sorry. I tend to give people nicknames out of the blue."

Salem laughed a bit. "I don't mind." A bit of a blush came up on his cheeks, and he looked down at his jeans, tugging on a thread there. "I need to think of a nickname for you now!"

He shrugged, he really shouldn’t tell her anything. She seemed nice though. “They’re just not nice. I’m supposed to meet my friend and he’ll take care of me.”

"How old is your friend?" Her eyes narrowed, worry clawing at her again. She heard about too many kids who disappeared with ‘friends’ only for their bodies to turn up later. She’d learned to be distrusting at a young age just for that reason.

"Uh." That was a good question. Salem chewed on his lip before answering. "I think Jeremy's just turned nineteen." He pushed some blonde hair back from his face and smiled at her.

"Don’t try it unless you need to." He told her honestly, brushing some dirty hair back from his face. “Jeremy’s my brother." That was a lie, but what difference would it make? “I have to find him, and then we’ll be together again."

Tara nodded at his advice before then smilingwhen he told her who Jeremy was. She answered him, “that’s nice that you have a brother. I never had siblings." She always wanted one though. Mommy and daddy had taken her little sister and brother with them. It wasn’t fair.

He shrugged, “I don’ know. He’s being more of a pain in the ass-" he paused, “Sorry for my language, -at the moment than anything." Salem added, “I’m Salem, what’s your name?"

Tara looked up at him when he said the bad word. She would get soap in her mouth if she said something like that. She had seen it happen to many other kids. She then answered him, “it’s still nice to have a brother. And I’m Tara Hammel. Hello Salem."

He yawned loudly, "Eh, nice is a relative term." He shrugged, "So, you live 'round here Tara?"

Salem shrugged a little bit. “Then you either gotta’ wait it out or leave." He shrugged, “Bed’s aren’t that great I suppose." He paused, “Not that I’m saying I wouldn’t love a bed, but you get over it." He glanced at the girl, and sturmmed a bit on the guitar. “This is a Bob Dylan song, it’s called, ‘Knockin’ on Heavens Door". He played the song, and set the guitar down. “Whaddya’ think?" As he turned to her, a guy dropped a toonie into the case as he passed. “Thank you sir!" Salem yelled after him with a smile.

Tara listened to the song patiently, moving her legs to her chest and folding her arms over them to rest her chin on them. She then answered him when he was done, “it was pretty good. I’ve never heard that song before. It was cool." She looked back at the man as well before turning back to the boy, “and I don’t know where I would sleep that would be safe for me if it wasn’t in my room at the Ingle’s."

He grinned, “Jeremy taught me Bob Dylan music." He added, “It’s hard for a while, but you get used to it. It’s easier when you’re small, you can hide in places better."

He looked at her, “Who’s taken’ care of you then?" She looked about six, but she was probably ten, just small for her age. He glanced at the guitar, and then back up at her. “Yes I do."

Tara looked up at him and answered, “it’s very nice. I’m guessing you play?" She sat down in front of the case to look at him, mesmorized by the instrument. She then answered him, “Sarah and Carter, but they don’t like me. Carter isn’t around a lot, but Sarah is, but she doesn’t do anything to help me anyway."

"Course I play." He laughed, “It’s not just here cause it’s pretty." He shrugged, “Why don’t you leave them if they’re so awful?" He shrugged, “Or report them to your case worker?"

Tara shrugged and said, “Allison doesn’t believe me. She says I’m over reacting to being there and that I’m lying. And I want to leave, I might as well, they might not even notice, but I don’t have anywhere to sleep. At least I have a bed there." She then looked at the guitar again, “and can you play a lot, or a little? I’ve never seen a guitar this close. My parents wanted me to learn, but they were wating for my birthday to get me one. I’ve heard that it sounds really nice."
