The Wayne manor is not a quiet place.

Someone Is always doing something, talking about anything, teasing, bantering, playfully slandering, so Bruce grew accustomed to noise. Its hard not to, with his nest of birds.

"YOU TRIED TO BLOW HIM UP!"

Cass is strong like a tsunami and silent as a snake, jumping on Bruce's back, beautiful eyes full of threat. " Dad stays. Mine."

Bruce pipes up, " I have a retirement plan--"

"Getting railed everyday at the Kent farm isn't a retirement!"

Tim gives Steph a look of disgust. "Gross."

Damian isn't above pulling out his swords. " If I don't get Baba, everyone is dying. Me included. "

"Damian. What did I say about threatening your siblings with murder?" Bruce asks expectantly.

" Oh, I'm not threatening, baba. I'm making a vow."

Alfred doesn't pry his attention from the chamomile tea he's preparing. " Master Bruce stays with me."

"...Alfred, I don't think you'll...You know, be around when Bruce retires--"

"Was that a contradiction?"

They all gulp. The argument is settled quickly, and Bruce spends the rest of his evening with head on Alfred's lap and his hand in Jason's hair, petting like a cat, and listening to RHOG on the TV.

He loves the noise.

+ series summary: as marius von hagen’s assistant, it’s your job to accompany him to certain public functions. you’re used to being in the background, but this time? the event is an engagement party, and he doesn’t need an assistant. he needs a date.

as soon as the elevator opens to the penthouse floor, you pull the key card out of your purse and march straight to the door on your right.

six months ago you would have hesitated. six months ago you would have knocked politely, with a cup of coffee, a muffin, and a kind smile. 

now, you slap the key against the scanner aggressively. as soon as it turns green, you push down the handle and lean heavily on the door to let yourself in. 

you scrunch your nose as you step over a pair of sloppily discarded high heels, slipping your own off and pushing both pairs aside with a stocking-clad foot. then you venture into your boss’ apartment, deciding to deal with the blonde scrolling through her phone on the couch first.

“you need to leave,” you tell her dispassionately, picking up what you assume is her clutch and tossing it into her lap. “this isn’t a bed and breakfast. mr. von hagen has business to attend to.”

you wait impatiently as she looks you up and down, taking in your office ensemble along with the identification card hanging from your lanyard. 

relenting, she lets you herd her out the door without protest, but not before handing off all her contact information in case your boss ‘wants to have fun again.’

you take the little slip of paper (noting the lipstick kiss in the corner), then slam the door in her face. 

monday mornings are always the same. 

after kicking out sunday’s trash, you grab some aspirin and a glass of water, heading for the master bedroom.

predictably, marius is still passed out. you find him practically spread-eagled in the bed, with only a thin top sheet protecting his modesty. 

you’ve learned the hard way that marius sleeps nude, but seeing his toned chest and abdomen, along with the neatly trimmed trail of hair leading below the sheet never fails to make you catch your breath…

you squeeze your eyes shut, telling yourself to snap out of it. he’s your boss, the man who signs your paychecks and is the cause of some of your biggest headaches to date. 

“sir,” you whisper harshly from the doorway, reluctant to move closer. when you don’t get a response, you call out to him again, this time at a normal volume. much to your chagrin, his cute sleeping face - mouth slightly parted, brows scrunched - remains unchanged. 

huffing, you step around last night’s clothes and empty liquor bottles to rip the curtains open, letting the morning sunshine stream into the room. this action makes marius stir, groaning tiredly as he lays a hand over his eyes. 

“sir,” you say again, with more force this time. “you have a consult with the legal team in a half hour.”

“the legal team…” he mutters, still refusing to pry his eyes open. 

he continues to grumble uselessly into his pillowcase, clearly intending to make your job as difficult as possible. 

…until you check your watch and decide that you can’t waste anymore time coddling him, so you take the half filled glass of water and dump it over his head. 

he jerks up with a sputter, glaring at you as he swipes the ice water out of his face. 

“there are nicer ways to wake a guy up, you know,” he huffs, shaking the water out of his hair. 

you set the glass down, sighing. “if you want to be babied, sir, you should call vincent.” 

he mumbles something you’re sure is rude under his breath, pushing wet bangs out of his face before asking, “where’s maia?”

“first of all her name is–” you check the note you’d scrunched in your pocket. “–mia and she left her cell number, home number, and the number of the strip club she works at.” you hold it out to him, humming. “very classy, sir.”  

he doesn’t even look at it, so you crumple it back up and stuff it into your pocket. 

“yikes. i don’t know why she bothered. i already gave her the speech.” he shrugs, clearing his throat as he recites, “‘last night was incredible. you’re a great girl, but right now in my career–’” 

“‘i just can’t give you the relationship you want or deserve,’” you finish, having heard him recycle the practiced line to multiple other hookups in the last three months.

“hey, you memorized it!” he exclaims, lifting his hand for a high five. he lowers it when he sees your unimpressed look. “wrong crowd, i see that now.”

rolling your eyes, you turn around and open the door to his closet, grabbing a set of clothes that costs more than your rent and laying them over your arm as you call over your shoulder, “when i took this job, i didn’t expect to deal with the pussy parade. be honest, are you in some kind of competitive sex tournament?”

“i’m young and single!” he reasons, catching the boxers you throw at his head and quickly slipping them on. “i’m allowed to sow a few oats.” 

everyone in the office knows that it’s really about the lawyer from themis getting engaged. 

you’ve seen the way marius used to look at her, seen the plain adoration that used to shine in his gaze. it’s why ever since news of her engagement, you go through this every monday— when she comes in to help him navigate the confusing reports and updates of confusing legalese.

his behaviour these past few weeks was a coping mechanism. an unhealthy one, obviously, but who were you to tell that to the president of a multi-billion dollar company?

“whatever you say, sir,” you shrug, shoving the pants and button down into his arms. “get changed. i’ll call vincent and have him let everyone know we’re on our way.” 

you step out of the bedroom to let him get dressed, deciding to make yourself busy by starting the coffee maker. as the scent of freshly ground beans fills the penthouse, you take a moment to pull out your phone and double-check your boss’ calendar. 

after the meeting with legal, his schedule is relatively clear. only a handful of things you need him to review, along with a spot of press. it’s a relatively easy monday, by all means.

it’s then that berry decides to make an appearance, the adorable russian blue leaping up onto the counter and meowing insistently to get your attention. smiling, you reach out to scratch lightly under his chin.

“what are we going to do with him, huh?” you whisper, scooping him up into your arms. content purrs rumble against your palm as you stroke his fur. 

“traitor,” marius scoffs, entering the kitchen. you glance over your shoulder to see him looking somewhat put together. not only is his shirt still untucked, but his hair is still messy and wet and you’re positive he’s still sweating tequila. 

he ignores the fresh coffee in favour of grabbing a carton of orange juice from the fridge. he unscrews the cap, flicking it onto the counter so he can take a swig. 

“unbelievable,” you mutter under your breath. marius  glances over at you, wiping the corner of his mouth with sleeve before holding the carton out to you. 

“what? you want some?”

you push it away with a fingertip. “no, thank you.”

he shrugs, screwing the cap back on and shoving it back into the fridge. you and berry watch with equally unimpressed looks as he rummages through the oversized pantry, resurfacing with a box of cereal. 

you turn to open a nearby cabinet, grabbing a bowl. 

but in those few seconds, he’d already ripped the box open and was scooping cereal out with his hands, pouring handfuls into his mouth. 

this is it, you think as he gets crumbs all over his nice shirt. this is what marius von hagen looks like when he hits rock bottom.

you barely make it to the meeting on time. 

the whole team is already seated, ready to begin. marius - with the mcdonald’s iced coffee that’d almost made the two of you late in hand - takes a seat at the head of the conference table. 

your boss is surprisingly alert despite the fact that his brain is currently steeped in alcohol. he takes notes, asks appropriate questions, makes thoughtful suggestions. it’s one of the things you respect about him. he is a professional first and foremost.

“it seems that’s all for today,” he says once the last subject has been covered. “if there are any other questions, please keep them to yourselves.”

with that, he makes his grand exit.

well…he was a professional most of the time.

you're quick to jump in when the room fills with dissatisfied murmurs. “if you have any questions, please direct them to vincent or myself so we may raise them with mr. von hagen at a later time."

with that, everyone carries on with their day. you head back to your desk with an armload of paperwork for marius to look over and sign. you read the first few pages as you walk, already working out a summary in your head.

you make it to your desk just in time to see rosa following marius into his office.

chatting in his office after a meeting is a fairly common occurance. rosa comes by to help review whatever contracts his staff of corporate lawyers had drawn up, or walk him through any topics confused about.

your phone buzzes with a message from marius.

[marius]: come get me in five to say that we’ll be late for lunch.

what isn’t common is for him to do that.

but you do as he says, knocking politely when the five minutes are up.

“come in!”

“sir,” you begin after sending rosa a small wave. “we’ll be late for lunch if we don’t leave now.”

“lunch?” the young lawyer echoes, sounding confused. “it’s hardly 10am.”

marius clicks his tongue, closing the folder on his desk. “well, you know what they say. early worm gets the worm.”

“that’s not at all correct—”

he’s already nudging you out the door, a respectful hand resting on the small of your back as he guides you away from his office. “see you later, miss!”

“what are you doing?” you ask, feeling your face heat up as you become the object of your coworker’s confused stares. “i have work to do—”

marius pulls you into an empty conference room, closing the door behind you.

“rosa invited me to her engagement party this weekend,” he says, tone clipped.

you’re not quite sure where he’s going with this. “shall i pick out a gift?”

“no, i’ll take care of that,” he tells you. then, with a growing smile that almost always means he’s up to something, he asks, “what are you doing this saturday?”

“i—”

“trick question. i’d like you to accompany me as my date.”

It’s well into the evening when Jeongguk walks you home. The path is quiet. It’s illuminated by the dim light of the street lamps. It feels like a scene from a movie you’ve once watched ー the origin of all your teenage fantasies. But this is real. You’re just a girl, standing in front of a boy, and that’s where it all begins. 

“y/n?” The way he says your name brings you to a halt. His voice, although usually confident, is timid and uncertain. “I’ll see you tomorrow, right? We still have a lot to talk about.” He looks at you with stars in his eyes, although none of them belong to you, and they could never be yours. 

Your lips press together in a tight line, nodding your head in affirmation. As you bid your goodbyes, you wonder if it would be inappropriate to give him a hug. “I’m sorry I don’t have a proper ring…” He begins. “I hope you can accept this for now, and I swear I’ll get a diamond on your hand one day ー As big as you want.” 

Jeongguk carefully pulls a small metal band from his pocket. It can easily be confused for the end piece of a keychain ー perhaps it’s something that his daughter had left behind in his coat, never to be remembered. But for Jeongguk, he knows perfectly well that it’s the pin from a grenade he had tossed the week prior on an escape mission. He slides the ring onto your finger, and although it is slightly too large, you wouldn’t have it any other way. 

“I may not have been your first choice of a partner, and for all I know, I could have been dead last, but thank you for sticking by me. I swear I’ll take care of you. I’ll hold your heart with gentle hands, and I won’t ever let it break.” 

After all, this is just pretend. 

But for some reason, his voice sounds so earnest, and you almost believe him. To be frank, you never really cared about lavish weddings and seven carat diamonds. If you were to ever look for a companion, all you could ask for is an honest partner.

Sakusa sighs.

This was exactly the scenario he was trying to avoid. His gleeful - prying eyes sear holes in the side of his head from where he’s got his nose pointed at his laptop monitor, and if his hunch should tell him anything; it’s that little Mr. GossipGirl won’t rest until he’s juiced him of all the mushy details.

But the problems not that he doesn’t like talking about you. It’s the opposite actually, he could start and never finish, it’s just…

It’s embarrassing to get all sweet and blushy in front of this honey-eyed fool or any of his teammates. He hates the vulnerability of it all. There’s a long moment he spends pointing his nose to the hotel ceiling to quietly deliberate. Longer the few seconds he spends clenching and unclenching his jaw as his eyes fall and his pupils twitch in careful thought. He opens his mouth - closes it again but his lips part on their own. Sakusa blows out a breath until his voice comes tumbling after it, and it pains him to know that his fight for composure was fruitless.

“If I tell you, will you shut up and go to bed?”

Atsumu crosses his fingers over his chest. “Hand to God.”

“We’ve been… dating for the past couple of years,” Three years and eighteen days of pure bliss. “She was one of my sister's students so we met through her.”

With his hand on the back of your neck he put a little more pressure to deepen the kiss and the other did the same on your lower back, you buried yours in his dark curls. It was romantically slow, you both just enjoyed the feel of each other’s lips. 

It wasn’t until you needed a breath of air that you broke away, but not before giving him a little peck.

You supported yourself on your hands on either side of his head and looked down at your boyfriend, letting out a giggle when you saw that his mouth was completely smeared with red. You thought about commenting on it, but he beat you to it.  

“Your mouth is all messy now.” He gently took you by the chin and his thumb wiped under your lips, you knew that this action had surely smeared the lipstick more instead of cleaning it, but you didn’t mind in the least. “Sorry.”

Sakusa almost freezes in surprise that Atsumu noticed you at all, let alone was chasing after you with such determination, but the way you've looked like you were slowly imploding tonight keeps his own feet moving.

From his angle on the dance floor Atsumu has the advantage as they both weave toward the exit after you. He gets through the doors first, quickly weaving into the elegant foyer; Sakusa makes it there in time to see Atsumu dash down a hallway. Not outside, as Sakusa expected, but down the dimly lit hallway toward a smaller, unused ballroom.

"You told me it would be different this time!"

Something squeezes Sakusa's heart and tightens his throat as he hears your distraught voice through the thin opening of the doors. He walks up as quietly as he can.

His thoughts are all over the place: pain at your distress, irritation at Atsumu for making you upset, a sick hope that you'll tear into Atsumu, anxiety for how Atsumu's going to respond.

"An' I thought it was gonna be." Atsumu's voice is tender but he sounds...confused.

Almost confused as you.

Sakusa frowns as the blonde adds "I don't know what's goin' on either."

"I shouldn't have come." You sound so frustrated. "I shouldn't have let you talk me into this 'Tsumu."

"Atsumu." Your voice is hard. "You told me you would--"

"Talk ta him, I know! I know! Buy ya don't understand how cranky 'Omi" --Sakusa feels like he's been dunked in ice at the sound of his name-- "can get! Especially when it's me talkin' ta him about somethin' he doesn't like!"

You let out a half-desperate, half-frustrated groan. "Atsumu! You PROMISED me you were going to talk to him!"

"Well-whua--what are we, in middle school?!" he poorly defends himself. "Yer both adults!"

Sakusa feels like he left his stomach back in the main gala because of course Atsumu was supposed to talk to him about something but didn't and it was probably to tell him to leave you alone and stop bothering you at all these events even though he looks forward to seeing you every time and hopes you'll be there and was hoping against hope that maybe you would, too, but no you don't feel anything like that about him or toward him and oh god he spent the whole night staring at you like a fucking creep--he almost dry heaves because Atsumu's right. You're an adult and he's an adult.

So instead of sneaking around and eavesdropping like a child Kiyoomi pushes through the doors.

Atsumu stops mid-sentence, "if ya wanted--" and whips around, eyes bulging as he gags on his words "-'O-'Omi--"

Sakusa forces his stony gaze to shift from Atsumu's guilty expression to your blank, unreadable one.

"Talking about me?" he asks; can you hear the hurt in his voice? Or does he just sound indifferent? Cold?

Your mouth opens and closes as your eyes widen, darting around as you try to assemble your thoughts.

Atsumu protectively steps forward. "'Omi it's not what it--"

"Can it, 'Tsumu!" you snap and shove him out of the way. "Move. You just called me out for not acting like an adult so don't butt in now." The scowl you give Atsumu melds into something else, something still fierce but not angry.

"Sakusa," you say, the fists clenched at your side betraying your determined calm. "Have I done something to upset you?"

Sakusa jerks back in surprise, confusing contorting his features. "What?"

You resolutely search his gaze. "Have I done something to upset or offend you? You usually talk to me...at least for a little bit...at these events but you've been avoiding me all night....Did I do something? Or say something that's upset you?"

Sakusa is dumbfounded. He scrambles to answer because his stunned silence your features crease with worry. "N-No."

"Then...were you...avoiding me?" you ask, unassuaged.

Atsumu's gesturing weirdly behind you, a partner in the world's worst game of charades, and Sakusa glances at him reflexively. You look over your shoulder and the blonde hides his hands but not quickly enough.

"Leave," you flatly demand.

"Huh?! Wha?!!! I wasn't even doin' anythin'!!"

"'Tsumu. Now!" you order and the blonde petulantly sulks out.

You wait a moment, slowly exhaling to reset yourself before turning back to Sakusa with that same anxious, determination. "Sakusa," you start again, "it feels like you're avoiding me tonight...is that true?"

"No."

You frown. "Oh...okay." Your eyes shift away as you rearrange your thoughts and feelings.

"I wasn't," he adds with surprising fervency, drawing your gaze back to him. "I wanted to come talk to you. I was just...nervous."

"About what?"

"If you wanted to talk to me."

"Oh." You look away, eyes widening with something he doesn't understand. "Um..."

"Fer god sakes--"

You and Sakusa flinch as Atsumu bursts back into the dark ballroom looking exasperated.

"JUST TELL HIM!" orders the fake blonde.

"Atsumu!" you snap, lunging at the blonde as Sakusa asks

"Tell me what?!"

Years of fist-fighting his twin make it easy for Atsumu to keep you at arm's length but you make it as difficult as possible for him to get the words out.

"Been--askin'--me!--Every--time!" Atsumu yelps in pain as a slap connects with his face. "GEEZ. JUS' Tell! Him!"

"FINE!" You huff and stop fighting, letting him shove you away. You straighten your fancy clothes and square your shoulders. "I...I only come to these things..." You only look at Sakusa in fleeting glances. "To...See...You."

"Guuhhhohmygosh," Atsumu says dropping his arms from their dramatic gesturing. "That was painful." He exaggeratedly walks out. "Spent all'a this time--" his complaints are cut off by the door clicking shut.

Something melts in the wake of Atsumu's exit. "Okay, that was kind of painful," you say with a sigh and turn back to Sakusa, a small smile pulling at the corner of your mouth. "I'm sorry, Sakusa--"

"Kiyoomi." Now he can barely look at you. "Please."

"Kiyoomi." Your smile bashfully deepens as if you liked the taste of his name on your tongue. After a moment you look up at him and the earnest sincerity pulls his gaze to you. "I like you. A lot. The first time I went to an event with Atsumu it was because he asked... The next few times I went because the MSBY manager asked me to...To keep Atsumu on his 'best behavior'," you say in a bad imitation.

Sakusa doesn't react; he's not sure he's even breathing anymore, too afraid that the most delicate disturbance will destroy the possibility.

You're watching him intently. "But I started enjoying them for myself...Not the events...But seeing you." You take a tentative step forward, testing. Sakusa's heart skips a beat. "I...I liked the way you kept me company." Another small step. "I liked being around you."

Sakusa has no idea what his face looks like right now, what you see as you're searching his expression.

"Do you like hanging out when we see each other?" you ask with cautious hope.

His voice is hoarse when he answers "yes."

"Do you..." you swallow thickly, "like...me?"

Sakusa can't bring himself to speak this time; he simply nods.

Heart throbbing in utter disbelief, ears ringing as he hears you whisper "I'm going to kiss you now...", eyes falling closed as his head swirls with the surprising series of events, Sakusa feels your lips softly press against his. He kisses you back for a moment before the world turns off.

Sakusa wakes up on the floor, his head pounding.

Something softly brushes his hair and he realizes his head's in your lap; you're looking down at him with fond concern.

"Feeling okay now?" you ask without judgment.

In disbelief he asks "did...did I faint?"

You nod, looking shyly pleased. "Yeah."

Sakusa quickly assesses himself and, after not feeling any pain, asks "did...you catch me?"

You lightheartedly laugh. "'Tsumu's always acting like a dramatic ass so I've gotten pretty good at catching people. You're lucky it was me."

Sakusa lets his eyes fall closed. "Yeah."

He smiles, feeling himself blush but not caring.

"I am lucky."
