SuYaoposting again. When Su She throws his sword into the Biling Lake and loses it, his defence is that Lan Wangji did it therefore he followed. The unfortunate counter-argument here was that he was nowhere near as talented or powerful as Lan Wangji, so he should know his limits and not try to overstep. We know practically nothing about Su She's background other than that he was a disciple of the Lan, but he does not belong to the main family and does not have the same surname. To him, quite correctly, this statement is both insulting and condescending, because Lan Wangji has a long family history of cultivators and pretty much won the genetics and finances and opportunity lottery. But you know who thinks he can pull one over Lan Wangji? Jin Guangyao, who trusted him to carry out a huge portion of his plan, and who saw his spirited devotion and potential ever since he offered him friendly acknowledgement all those years ago when he was just a fledgling sect leader. He was the one who looked at him and thought "yeah this guy has the potential to be useful." The Lan didn't. The Lan failed him.

But Jin Guangyao may have learnt this habit of recognising talent from a Lan himself, and so Su She might never overcome Lan Xichen in Jin Guangyao's heart. He is destined to be bested by a Lan forever.
