He froze at her words. At the name, to be precise. His gaze shifted away from the phone screen and up to meet Paloma’s, features firm and yet they had fallen for the hint of a second. “I’m afraid that’s impossible.” That was all he had to say about that matter; why lingering in the past, after all. Right?
With a sigh he put t he phone on the table. No response. Rather strange, considering at least someone at MI6 was supposed to be working. His eyes closed for a moment. Maybe that helped him concentrate and recollect his thoughts. It didn’t, though. Paloma kept talking.
“I am in no way doubting your abilities, Miss Paloma,” M reassured her. “You’ve proved yourself highly valuable. Being with my own people would still be more assuring, I’m afraid.” Where the hell was Tanner? His chief of staff wasn’t responding either. “You don’t happen to have a safe house anywhere near?”
That’s impossible. Paloma was no idiot. She recognized that tone of voice. She’d recognize it anywhere.-- No. This couldn’t be. Although she barely got to know Bond she was rather fond of him. She wouldn’t have minded becoming something of partners. Maybe even friends? A quiet heaviness grew in her heart. “Understood,” she nodded at M’s words. “There’s a hotel a block away from here, we’ll be safe there. I already checked us in.-- Separate rooms, don’t worry,” she assured him. “We can try contacting your people there.”
The top most floor of the hotel. That’s where they were booked. There were only a few more rooms up there and only one lift heading to the floor, that way Paloma would be able to keep an eye on who comes in and out. “It’s not a penthouse, but it’s a suite. Not too bad, no?” she smiled as she lead M into his room, quickly checking around for anything out of the ordinary. So far so good. “Don’t worry. My room is just across the hall, so incase anything happens I’ll be right there.” Paloma had to admit, while she was nothing more than a novice agent, it still was a curious business. Why was she put in charge of keeping an eye on the head of MI6? Why not one of his own agents? More importantly, what exactly was she keeping an eye on him for? Surely, this man was more than capable of fending for himself. Hopefully she’d get clearer answers soon. “I’ll just update my agency on our location, okay?” Snatching her phone from out of her pocket she began to type up a message. Her fingers slowed however when she remembered M’s words. “How did it happen?” she asked softly, brown eyes glancing back up at the older man innocently. “Bond, I mean. How and when did it happen, if you don’t mind me asking?”
