About the work:
Between Lands and Longings: Reflections is a new twenty six minute sound piece (anchored with accompanying visuals) that reflects on Zierle & Carter’s Between Lands and Longings Living Room Opera performance; an immersive, multi-sensory, site-specific ‘live art opera’ made for living rooms and domestic environments that revolves around, and delves into questions of cultural identity, home, and notions of place.
“… Arriving on new lands, yet reaching back to touch the old,
lingering for a moment, before the old crumbles away between our hands.
The loss keeps pushing us forward - eyes wide open…”
Titled as a reflection, Between Lands and Longings: Reflections provides the essence of the live performance on screen, providing an edited selection of the audio element of the final two-hour performance manifestation on a farm in Melbourne, Australia. Mixed to stereo, this twenty six minute version was edited from twenty eight hours of conversations/interview material, which was recorded in Australia in 2012 and meticulously edited for the various Living Room Opera performance manifestations, arriving at a two hour edit that was panned to thirty speakers embedded within furniture and domestic/working environments across the farm.
To accompany the sound, the artists have selected images from the research phase of their two year Arts Council England funded project Between Lands: A Sense of Belonging Enquiry, as well as images from the final Between Lands and Longings performances.
Similar to the way the initial conversations Zierle & Carter had on belonging with people in Australia were structured, the audio in Between Lands and Longings: Reflections begins with an initial exploration of sense of belonging through definitions, moves through the five senses and beyond, delves into the opposite of belonging, and finishes the journey with what actions do you take to move from a place of non-belonging back to a place of belonging.
Further contextual information:
Between Lands: A Sense of Belonging Enquiry began in 2012 with an Arts Council England grant for a six weeks research and development residency in Australia with Chamber Made Opera, marking the launch of Zierle & Carter’s latest enquiry into sense of belonging and specifically investigating facets and expressions of cultural identity through the lens and context of Australia. Working in the community, the artists connected with various people from different ethnic backgrounds through discussions and informal interviews, exploring the intricacies of Australia’s native people and the long history of migrant settlers and refugees, bringing to question notions of ‘home’. From this research they created their version of a 'Living Room Opera' for Chamber Made Opera's ongoing series.
Marking new terrain for the artists in terms of scale and production, Between Lands and Longings weaves together personal stories and definitions of sense of belonging into a rich fabric of actions, images, and sounds. A stream of embedded voices in a homely environment echo stories of migration and peoples’ search for a sense of home, as they are torn between lands and longings.
To date, Between Lands and Longings has been presented in homes in Bristol for its world premiere at IBT13, in Cornwall in collaboration with Falmouth University, and on a farm in the Macedon Ranges just outside Melbourne as part of a weekend series of Living Room Operas, where audiences were taken on a performance journey at dusk from a lake, to a hunting lodge, horse stables and finally into a shearing shed.
Between Lands and Longings has been co-commissioned and produced by In Between Time and Chamber Made Opera. The research, development and presentation to date of Between Lands and Longings has been kindly supported by Arts Council England, Chamber Made Opera, In Between Time and Falmouth University.
