My friends, Iyad Sobhe and Ruba Abushahan, could have died yesterday.

Iyad Sobhe (@iyadsobhegaza) and Ruba Abushahan (@rubashsblog) have narrowly escaped death when the IOF has launched multiple airstrikes in Deir al-Balah. A mosque has been targeted. 24 people have been martyred and 93 people have been injured. Middle East Monitor states the aftermath: "Medical sources confirmed that many of the victims were children. Rescuers described gruesome scenes, with several children’s bodies arriving at hospitals decapitated, while others were in critical condition".

Their temporary home and their personal belongings are gone once again! It is a miracle because the last time Ruba has been displaced, she has sustained a stomach injury, losing a lot of blood! Now she tells me that she is exhausted and she wants the genocide to end! She also worries about Iyad since he is diabetic and his children who are 5, 7, 10, 13, and 14.

I am Samah, a mother living with my family in Gaza under harsh and difficult conditions due to the ongoing war. We are currently living in a tent, which is extremely challenging, especially with winter approaching and the hardships it brings. Our tent does not provide adequate protection from the cold and rain, exacerbating our suffering, particularly with young children who need care and attention.

Before October 7th, Namer Matar and his wife owned a stonemasonry business, now destroyed by the constant bombing of the zionist occupation. His wife was pregnant with twins, and she gave birth to two boys in unsanitary and atrocious conditions in displacement. 3 months after their birth, both boys contracted a serious condition that needed immediate intensive care, but because of the zionist occupation's bombings of hospitals and the blockade preventing medical aid from entering, the care was not adequate, and one of the boys - Ali (named after his martyred uncle) - died very quickly. Short version; no, "phone addiction" and "social media addiction" aren't real. Obviously it's possible to overuse them in unhealthy ways, but that's true of practically anything enjoyable. Checking your phone isn't going to give you brain damage.

The only reference backing up any of this scaremongering is an article on phone addiction from "Addiction Center"; an internet marketing website which takes commission from forwarding people onto paid services. There are four(!) referral links Better Help embedded in the article. This is not an unbiased source.

It does include citations, but the sources are either spurious or nonexistent. The research they reference on how phone usage causes brain damage isn't linked, for example, but after finding the paper it's based on an inconclusive study of 19 children. The other papers cited found depression and anxiety correlate with phone usage, but only correlation not causation.

I think the problem is people are using "addiction" where it doesn't really make sense. Whether or not you spend a majority of your time on social media depends on your personal life and not just your phone.

When I was reclusive and severely depressed for a few years my screen time was probably like 12 hours a day. I have the same phone now that I did then but my screen time is down because I'm more proactive in my life. If someone appears addicted to their phone it's probably because whatever is going on there is better than their real life. And in this case the problem remains with and without the phone

If you've been following the news from Gaza the past 48 hours, you'll know that the situation in northern Gaza has been bleak to say the least.

With intensified Israeli attacks against civilians, particularly in the Jabalya refugee camp, Israel is also focusing a lot of its violence against journalists and hospitals (for obvious, genocidal reasons).

Today, Israel had ordered the only remaining major hospital in Northern Gaza to evacuate staff and patients within the next 24 hours, warning that they will turn it into another Al Shifa hospital scenario, which we all know was turned from hospital to a mass grave.

Also today, Israel had killed journalist Mohamed Tanani and injured cameraman Fadi Alwahidi and correspondent Tamer Lobaid. This is a mere couple of days after Israel had assassinated 19 year old journalist Hasan Hamad who they sent death threats to, warning him against sharing videos of Israeli crimes.

This is all in one day.

Just remember that everything you know about Israel's atrocities in Gaza only got to you through the Palestinian journalists on the ground who are risking their lives in a time period considered to be the deadliest on record for journalists. So amplify their voices and share their reports and stories widely.
