Of course he would be stubborn. Uchiha Itachi was a stubborn man, and he always would be. She didn’t fight as he pulled his hand away, blinking as the gentle caress of his thumb sent a warm feeling up through her arm and to her chest. The smallest affections meant the most. He wasn’t being stubborn because he was trying to be strong.
The warmth of the bento box his hand led hers to made her remember why he had left in the first place. Leaning over against him again, she placed a kiss to his cheek before opening the box and feeling for the hashi. Thankfully, she found them right away, through tracing her fingers along the edge of the box.
"Itadakimasu." Slowly, she picked up a piece of the food with the hashi, bringing it carefully to her mouth before eating it. Her eyes closed as the savory taste took over her senses, a pleasant experience as she continued to eat.
Watching her with tired eyes, Itachi accepted the affectionate kiss and settled properly onto the bed, crossing legs. He waited for her to start eating before picking up the second box.
Lifting the lid and placing it under the box, he took the hashi and ate slowly, taking his time to chew each piece of food so it would go down with more ease. Swallowing wasn't pleasant when his chest felt constricted, but the food was well made and the warmth of it helped soothe him.
Her fingertips brushed along his as he took the bottle, and there was a visible pout as the Uchiha stood. She felt him tremble and waver, and another tear fell down her cheek. For her, he would push himself like this. That she held value to this man to such a degree was something she still had trouble understanding.
Unable to continue her usual practice of keeping a sphere of chakra flowing around her, she was completely dependent on her senses of touch and smell. Tugging the cloak tightly around herself as the man walked away, her eyes stayed on him, focused though unseeing.
The vibrations of the air only alerted her to how close he had gotten again once he was a few feet away, and the moment he sat down she leaned against him and placed one hand over his chest. His heart was still slightly irregular, something she knew by now caused him pain. His breathing felt a bit forced, and she made a serious face.
Her chakra was already extremely low, but out of the two of them, Itachi took priority. It was fine if she couldn’t fight, so long as she could run. Like this, Itachi would be able to do neither.
She eased some of her chakra from her hand into his chest, not announcing her action so that he could not protest it. At the very least, she could ease some of the pain before the medicine took effect. She would not be useless.
The warmth of her hand against his chest wasn't unexpected, and neither was the slight feeling of relief as she tried to ease his pain. Setting both boxes down on the bed, he put one hand over hers and pulled it away, not wanting her to push herself.
He would survive. Food and rest would be enough for the night, and she could care for him in the morning. It would do no good for both of them to be completely drained of energy.
He moved his thumb over her hand, a gentle caress that came before he set it down over one of the food boxes, still slightly warm.

It’s fine. Was it really? Was it really fine to be so weak? She couldn’t bring herself to ask or question him, instead letting the soft vibrations of his low voice help to soothe her.
Resting her head against his chest, she felt the chakra in his hands swirl and after a moment, everything was silent. She could still feel his now unsteady heartbeat, his chest rising and falling with her forehead pressed against it. She was completely without sound now, a genjutsu she knew, and another vulnerability.
Vulnerable, weak, and relieved, she sighed softly.
"I trust you."
Casting the genjutsu made him tired, and the pain in his chest spiked for a moment, making his breathing difficult. He pushed through it, reaching into his cloak and taking out the small bottle of pills.
Taking her hand in his own, he allowed her to feel the bottle before moving away, his way of letting her know he would have to take the medicine.
Itachi's legs trembled as he stood, removing his cloak to properly wrap it around her. Walking towards the table with the jar of water, he coughed into his free hand and stopped for a moment, leaning his head back to focus his breathing.
It was dangerous for both of them to be so weakened, particularly with Kisame in the next room. There was a strong aspect of respect in their relationship, as the larger man acknowledged his strength. Even so, he wouldn't doubt that Kisame would kill him if he allowed himself to be vulnerable in his presence.
Taking two pills with a cup of water, he coughed again and steadied himself on the table. It took a minute for his breathing to return to normal, and with the same difficulty he had to reach the table, he returned to the bed carrying both boxes of food he had brought in earlier.
Covered in the warmth of his cloak, and more so his embrace, some of her trembling managed to stop. She felt weak, useless, a burden to the person who’s use of hers mattered the most. And yet here he was, holding her while something as simple as sound crippled her.
Crying into the crook of his neck, she felt his hands over her ears. It was a gentle touch, but it helped to muffle some of the outside sounds. She could better hear the loud beats of his heart, the flowing of air in and out of his lungs. Her head still throbbed with pain, eyes shutting tightly as she tried to steady her breathing.
"I’m sorry," she whispered meekly. "I’m so sorry."
"It's fine." He whispered, careful that his voice wouldn't hurt her more. Clearly, while his efforts helped slightly, they wouldn't eliminate the problem. He didn't want to speak and risk worsening her situation, but for what he planned to do, there needed to be permission.
The alternative to soundproofing the room was putting her under a genjutsu, which wouldn't exhaust him as much as the first idea. It could work, but he would need to take more of the medicine soon after as he wasn't pushing the limits of his body.
His voice still low, he spoke again.
"I'm going to block out the sound. Trust me."
Initially, she had suggested to be the one to go out and fetch food in the first place, Itachi’s health and stamina in the forefront of her thoughts at that time. Now, she had a guilty sense of relief that he had been stubborn about wanting to scope the area himself.
She flinched as the door opened, whimpering as the boxes were set down. The contact was warm and welcome, and she forwent all of her usual hesitance and clung tightly to the man’s shirt. His heartbeat throbbed around her, his breaths enveloping her and colliding with the noise from outside.
Another soft sob escaped her. She was strong, a kunoichi, someone capable and useful. At least, she was supposed to be. Like this, she felt weak and useless, and that made her cry more than the pain from the disabling sounds around her.
"Itachi," she pleaded weakly, her voice barely more than a trembling whisper. "Make it stop."
The lack of hesitance in her actions told him how severe the situation was. Careful with the sound, he slowly opened the dark cloak he wore and wrapped it around her, embracing her at the same time.
The times when he could properly care for her were few and very rare, but this would have to be one of them. He could try soundproofing the room, but the technique for it would drain him of what little strength was left, and so that was a difficult decision.
Gently, he rested his hands over her ears to help block the sounds, knowing it wouldn't do much to help.
