“I don’t know who the fuck you think you’re talkin’ to, but evidently it’s someone who couldn’t give a shit.” Hallie replied, although the way he spoke about his folks did hit a chord in her that made her want to give him some sort of advice. Which, in turn, just made her think about how old she was actually getting when she felt the need to teach life lessons to kids.

“Rude. I mean. Geez.” Thorin rolled his eyes. “I wasn’t really talking to anyone really. Kinda talking to the air. And I certainly didn’t think someone would be so pissy about it.”

“And here I was thinking you’d just do it for free, I guess I’ll just have to entertain myself with your failed attempt at a bark then.” Because she should know how to bark by now, though she was pretty sure she had never done so before. Growl. Yes. Bark. No. “You’d be a bit of an idiot to think that you were able to do that so seamlessly, though I am intrigued to know why you’ve been in the infirmary for so long? Lot’s of battle wounds?” She couldn’t help but ask, when the other repeated her surname she nodded and then again when he spoke her first, “That’s me and as for the you being surprised to actually get to talk to me, I have to ask- why is that?”

“You’d better because, honey, that’s all you’re getting.” He winked at her, his smile playful. “Eh. Nothing awesome. Got cornered by a greater demon under prepared. Took a hit. Luckily my sister was able to take it out and get my sorry ass back the Institute.” He absentmindedly rubbed at his side, a phantom pain. “Well, I mean, you were, like, disowned .Turned into a werewolf. If I’d have been you I’d have killed myself the second I turned.”

Elisa had been avoiding everyone she knew because it was easier to navigate her new life that way. What she hadn’t been expecting was for her past to come up to her and strike up a conversation as if nothing had happened. “Thorin!” She jumped back, scared. Her hand covered her mouth as she felt fangs pinch her bottom lip. “In charge of what?” Elisabete couldn’t remember if Thorin had ever told her if his parents were in charge of an Institute somewhere.

“Elisa? My God I’d thought you’d left town! Where’d you run off to?” He smiled warmly at her, genuinely glad to see her and a little bit worried about her at the some time. He liked her. “In charge of the family name. Can’t trust us to bring honor and glory just yet. Still learning how to rub shoulders you see.”

Alice’s expression softened ever so slightly when the other admitted to not taking it easy on her, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so distracted that you’ve lost focused during training, so this must be something big.” She told the other, picking up her water and taking a large gulp since she had been doing the most work out of the two of them for the last half hour. “Want to talk about what has you so distracted, I can offer my best sisterly advice-.. though I can’t promise it’ll be good advice. It all depends on the situation really.”

At least she wasn’t mad at him for fessing up about being distracted. He’d half expected that to be totally honest. “Yeah. You could say it’s big.” Huge. Life changing. Massive. “I’m not...I’m entirely sure you’re the best person to talk to about this...big thing, Alice. It’s...It’s big.”

“Would be happier with you on all fours, wagging your tail, but that’ll do.” She grinned, because she didn’t expect him to humour her and yet he did. “I mean you could try but I think all you would accomplish is a broken collarbone, you can’t just pass through things, you’re not a ghost.” Rayna chuckled a little before humming, “I know a thing or two about being modern legends, or not so modern I guess. I’m a Wayfelle- or the disgraced Wayfelle as I’ve heard some people call me.”

“Yeah. No amount of money could get me to do that so you’re on your own here.” He smirked and rolled his eyes, not even entertaining the thought. “Exactly why I am out here, wandering around, lost. Spent enough time in the infirmary to last me a life time. Not gonna put myself there again cause I decided I’d try this phasing through walls things.” He laughed. “Wayfelle? I mean...You’re Rayna? I’m surprised I’m actually getting to talk to you honestly.”

Alice liked to think she knew her brother well, even if they had only recently been close she knew that when it came to training Thorin was laser focused, apart from today. He hadn’t blocked her easy and predictable hits, was barely putting any effort into his assault and frankly it was pissing her off. When she managed to knock the long sword from his hand she relented, throwing up her hands and looking at her sibling. “Alright, what’s going on- because I don’t mean to be rude but you’re fighting has taken a dramatic decrease and I’m pretty sure you can’t blame it on the injury now. You better not be letting me win, because I swear if you are I’m going to really show you my wrath and trust me when I say you don’t want to be on the other end of that.”

To say Thorin was distracted would be an understatement. All he could hear were the words on a fire message his parents had sent him a few days ago. A final plea for him to come home. To stop chasing the nobody that he’d been told was his sister ever since he could remember. Adopted. A pity case. A lot of the pieces fit together reading that, the near neglect on her end and the lavish love on his. It was a hard pill to swallow but harder still to decide what he was going to do with the information. He wanted to tell Alice, wanted to let her see, understand. But he didn’t want to either. Taken in or not taken in she was still his sister and they’d only just managed to fix things. Alice knocked his sword out of his hands, not that he’d been paying that close of attention to the sparring anyways, but her anger was enough to shake him out of his head. “I’m...It’s not my injury...and I am not taking it easy on you. I’m just...distracted.” And entirely unwilling to be anywhere near this type of conversation with Alice.

“You’d think after I’ve told them no like five times already they’d get the hint that I am not coming back yet.” Thorin scoffed. “Parents. Can’t live with them can’t live without them. My brother and I are counting down the days until they retire and leave us in charge.”

Thomas narrowed his eyes at that, shooting a deadly glare at Thorin. “I don’t need you to keep any fucking secret! There is no secret! I knew things before I even moved to New York! I saw it with my own eyes!”

“Did you now? So it wasn’t the traitor’s kid who broke the law? Who was it then? And trust me. I’ve been to a lot of Institutes. I know people. Don’t lie.”

I’m still going to see puppy dog.” She continued to tease, because the guy was cute and she could never picture him as someone who would spark terror into her life. “I’ve always seen Shadowhunters as having an internal gps when it comes to finding the Institute, whether you be new or not. It’s like it calls to you, or maybe that’s just me.” Rayna let out a small noise when the other told her his name, “Ah Belefleur, I’ve heard of your family before. You’re pretty well known in the Shadowhunter world.”

“Arf. Arf. Happy?” He stuck his tongue out at her, mildly amused by her. “Oh. No. I can feel it calling. But so far it’s asked me to walk through at least three buildings and as cool as that would be I am not a fan of drawing attention to myself.” He laughed. “I’m sure you have. We’re prolific in the shadow world to tell you the truth. Between me and my brother we’re like...modern legends or some shit, right?”

“I have a very clear image of him that way in my head right now and I wish I could share it with you because it’s amusing me greatly.” Alice chuckled, because Oakley was the biggest out of him and Thorin and the idea of him sat with all of the smaller housewives, well it was a quite the image to conjure up in her head. “He can do his worst, I’m not scared of him.” She commented, holding her chin up because she wasn’t going to let her brother scare her into running from her other brother if she somehow managed to piss him off. “I might be smaller but I bet I’m just as scary as him when I’m pissed.” Alice laughed, taking a hold of her brothers hand as she moved closer to the bed he was lying in, “W’ll work something out, it’s me and you we need to fix first but before we do that, you really need to get some more rest, Thorin. I’ll stay right here while you do- I promise.”

“Nope. Nope I’m pretty sure we have the same image.” He chuckled, shaking away the picture lest it cause him to break out into painful laughs. “Sister...not to be the bearer of bad news but, like, I’m afraid of Oakley so you probably should be too. And I’m not going to compare the two pissed off options. Both are equally a terrifying. I am Switzerland here. Switzerland.” He smiled at her. “Hey. We’re better than we used to be. Right? Yeah.” He closed his eyes. “Not gonna lie, sleeping all day sounds like the most amazing idea. I’m all over that.”

“Maybe that’s what he wants you to believe, he say’s he’s going to do some training but in reality he’s sitting with the housewives of Idris, sipping tea and well- spilling the tea.” She teased, wiggling her eyebrows at her brother as a smile made it’s way onto her face at the sheer thought of Oakley doing just that. “Fine. Fine. You win.” She exclaimed, holding her hands up in defeat, Alice shrugged, because she wasn’t sure if her other brother would love the idea of the two of them getting to know one another, she always got the feeling that Oakley was never her biggest fan. “We’ll see- as for the not being punched by him thing. One, I’m his little baby sister, he’d never punch me. Two, I’d punch him back just as hard if not harder. And three, I don’t think I’ve had a conversation with him long enough to inflict that sort of reaction.”

“You know. Amusing as that thought is I’m having the hardest time picturing our Oakley poised on some little poof stool sipping tea and eating cakes or something.” The hulking mass that was Oakley would look ridiculous in such a setting. “Oh trust me, Alice. I  used to think I was safe cause I was his twin. Boy was I wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. You’re not safe. Trust me. You are not safe.” He smiled at her, laughing again. “We’re gonna change that anyways. get him to like you. I’ll...drag him by his ears...or something.”

“It was a figure of speech, sir.” Thorin narrowed his eyes at him. “Beaufort Ravenscar, the traitor’s kid, brought a mundane, Thomas Whitmane, into the Institute. Apparently told him all about how we work and then released him back into the mundane world and now the mundie is going around bragging about it.”

“You’re in luck, me and Oakley don’t exactly have weekly gossip sessions, so your secret is safe with me.” Alice glared at her brother, crossing her arms over her chest, “I’m well aware of how words work, Brother. And you can totally take them back, especially when they’re just tentative and not set in stone.” Alice chuckled lightly, though the laughter didn’t quite ring the way it normally did, “Yeah, I guess it is. I just wish I could have a do over with him as well as you-.. baby steps.” Because she hoped that she’d get the chance to rekindle the relationship with her other brother, just like what she was doing with Thorin. “Oh I would totally stand on his foot, I’m not scared of him.” She told the other, sitting up straight before rolling her eyes at her brother, “Yeah, you are.”

“Between you and me I don’t think Oakley does gossip sessions at all. Too busy beating the shit out of some poor training dummy.” He winked, joking. Oakley could have fun....just had to work hard to get him there first. “I claim your words. Now you can’t take them back.” He stuck his tongue out at her and closed his eyes, tired. “Maybe some day you will. He likes me. I’l talk to him about it. For all we know he might love the idea.” He smiled. “You’ve never been punched by a mad Oakley have you?”

Rayna squinted her eyes slightly as she took in the others appearance, “I’m sorry but you’re adorable, I don’t think I could ever see you as scary.” She teased, though the other did have a rather puppy like face, he was someone’s who’s cheeks you would pinch, not someone who you would cower from. “Maybe, though I wouldn’t say it was guaranteed. You might have just gotten lucky the first time.” She shrugged, because for a newbie New York was hard to navigate and the Institute was hard to find, but she had come to realise that when you really needed it you could find your way blindfolded. It was almost like a beacon, calling out to you. “Of course you would, especially when those offers don’t come around very often. And it’s Rayna-.. Rayna Wayfelle.” She smiled, holding out her hand to the other. 

“You do realize you’ve insulted me and I’m now obligated to prove that I  can, in fact, be quite scary.” He smirked at her, a playful edge to it. “Might have? I’m going to be honest here. I totally got lucky. New York is huge and if I’d wandered the wrong direction I might very not be here right now.” A booming laugh. “Pleasure to meet you Ms. Wayfelle. I’m Thorin Belefleur. Pleasure to meet you!”
