Planning had been easy, as he knew it would be. Heâd gone into a den of hundreds with no planning. A den of fifty wouldnât hurt. Especially not when he knew the two faces he was looking for. Maybe even the leader would listen to sense and hand them over. Maybe. Before the sun had really started to rise Beau was dressed and heading out of the Institute, bo staff already extended in his hands Today was going to be a good day. He could feel it in his bones. Revenge would be sweet. And he would leave Elisa behind yet again. For a moment his thoughts flickered to Eliza, to Clara, to Alec, but he shoved them away. If he thought about them now he might never leave. And he couldnâtâŠno, wouldnât live anywhere near Elisa any longer.
He paused outside the derelict building, gauging how to best enter it. He wanted a quick exit but he wanted to make it clear he was going to fight if he had to. After a moment he nodded and shouldered open the door, making sure to stand in the light spilling from the door way. His stomach sank suddenly for no reason at all. Beau opted to ignore it. Too late to back out now. âCome out, come out wherever you are.â Beau sing songed, spiraling his bo staff in a threatening manner. No one emerged. âHand over Sergei and Alexei and Iâll be on my way.â
A form stepped from the shadows under the stairs instantly putting Beau on guard. âWeâve been waiting for you Ravenscar. My brothers have put together aâŠfine gift for you.â Beauâs eyes narrowed and his grip tightened on his staff. Something about this felt off. It all felt off.
âWhat are you talking about?â
The vampire only laughed and Beauâs arm hairs stood on end. He didnât move. He didnât like this. But he couldnât, wouldnât, let them live. He took a step inside.
It all happened so fast. One second she was armed and ready, granted out numbered, and the next she was surrounded by darkness. Encapsulated by dirt and a rampant hunger that was tearing her apart, Eliza screamed. No one could hear her. Clawing her way against layer after layer of dirt and soot and rock and mud, her first breath wasnât even gratifying. All she could think about was food. Food. NO, not food. Blood.Â
A collar was clamped to her neck. Eliza whipped around and snarled, tears streaming down her face. Where was she? What happened? Why was she so filthy? Where were her runes? Another shackle of metal locked her ankles and wrists to the wall. She yanked and cried out, screaming until her throat fell raw. Those around her simply grinned.
Chest heaving, Eliza Rosewane didnât stop thrashing until she heard the sweet, sultry sound of a heartbeat. The girl stilled. Her pupils dilated. Dry tongue coated her dirt stained chapped lips. She felt a swelling in her mouth as teeth sprang out, pricking her bottom lip. âGive it to me.â Eliza demanded. âGIVE IT TO ME.â God, sheâd never been so hungry before. So desperate.Â
When the door opened, an ungodly light flooded the damp room she was trapped in. Eliza instinctively hissed and backed away, chains scratching the floor.
