“She’s a classic character, but it’s not exactly life or death if you don’t know her.” She explained to the other, because she knew that where Beau was concerned his references on pop culture was pretty slim. “I can tell, I see all the effort you put in, also girls love that mysterious almost bad boy look about someone, no wonder they fawn after you.” She commented, letting her eyes roam the others body before meeting his eyes, “Well it’s safe to say you definitely don’t have an ugly face.”

At least she wasn’t mad at him for fessing up about being distracted. He’d half expected that to be totally honest. “Yeah. You could say it’s big.” Huge. Life changing. Massive. “I’m not…I’m entirely sure you’re the best person to talk to about this…big thing, Alice. It’s…It’s big.”

“As you keep saying.” She commented with a slight roll of her eyes when the other mentioned it being big three times now, “But look, who else are you going to talk about this with- Oakley isn’t here and you haven’t exactly made many friends whilst being here.” Though that wasn’t a dig at the others social skills, more like he hadn’t been here long enough to make those kind of connections, “So really I think I’m your best bet, I’m family after all- surely I should be one of the people you can tell anything too.”

Beau smirked at her over the rim of his glass, killing of the drink and promptly ordering another.  “Maybe. But I wouldn’t be too confident in your abilities just yet.” He winked. “What can I say? I live to stroke that ego of yours.”

“And why is that? Do you think I’m going to turn into Wednesday Adams or something- though I doubt you know who she is.” Because she knew that like most Shadowhunters the other wasn’t caught up on pop culture references. “And it’s why I keep coming back to you time and time again, that and you’re easy on the eyes.”

To say Thorin was distracted would be an understatement. All he could hear were the words on a fire message his parents had sent him a few days ago. A final plea for him to come home. To stop chasing the nobody that he’d been told was his sister ever since he could remember. Adopted. A pity case. A lot of the pieces fit together reading that, the near neglect on her end and the lavish love on his. It was a hard pill to swallow but harder still to decide what he was going to do with the information. He wanted to tell Alice, wanted to let her see, understand. But he didn’t want to either. Taken in or not taken in she was still his sister and they’d only just managed to fix things. Alice knocked his sword out of his hands, not that he’d been paying that close of attention to the sparring anyways, but her anger was enough to shake him out of his head. “I’m…It’s not my injury…and I am not taking it easy on you. I’m just…distracted.” And entirely unwilling to be anywhere near this type of conversation with Alice.

Alice’s expression softened ever so slightly when the other admitted to not taking it easy on her, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so distracted that you’ve lost focused during training, so this must be something big.” She told the other, picking up her water and taking a large gulp since she had been doing the most work out of the two of them for the last half hour. “Want to talk about what has you so distracted, I can offer my best sisterly advice-.. though I can’t promise it’ll be good advice. It all depends on the situation really.”

“Then I guess we’re both creepy.” He shrugged. “No. You are much better than the average lovely lady. Don’t let that go to your head.”

“I’m not-..” She started before realising what she was about to say and nodding in the others direction, “Touche. But just to make it clear, I’m less creepy then you.” Alice smiled, “Too late, already there. Thank you for that little bit of an ego stroke.” She teased, winking in his direction before taking a sip from her drink.

Alice liked to think she knew her brother well, even if they had only recently been close she knew that when it came to training Thorin was laser focused, apart from today. He hadn’t blocked her easy and predictable hits, was barely putting any effort into his assault and frankly it was pissing her off. When she managed to knock the long sword from his hand she relented, throwing up her hands and looking at her sibling. “Alright, what’s going on- because I don’t mean to be rude but you’re fighting has taken a dramatic decrease and I’m pretty sure you can’t blame it on the injury now. You better not be letting me win, because I swear if you are I’m going to really show you my wrath and trust me when I say you don’t want to be on the other end of that.”

“Nope. Nope I’m pretty sure we have the same image.” He chuckled, shaking away the picture lest it cause him to break out into painful laughs. “Sister…not to be the bearer of bad news but, like, I’m afraid of Oakley so you probably should be too. And I’m not going to compare the two pissed off options. Both are equally a terrifying. I am Switzerland here. Switzerland.” He smiled at her. “Hey. We’re better than we used to be. Right? Yeah.” He closed his eyes. “Not gonna lie, sleeping all day sounds like the most amazing idea. I’m all over that.”

“You can tell me that I should be afraid all you want big brother, but I’m really not. I took down a greater demon, I am fearless, Oakley doesn’t scare me and if he should try to talk down to me then he will feel my wrath. As William Shakespeare once wrote, although she is small, she is fierce.” Alice smiled softly at her brother and nodded, “Yeah. We are.” She chuckled and leaned over to press a small kiss to her brothers forehead. “Sleep well, Thorin.”

“I dunno. I think you might be worth the bruises.” Lucas told her with a little bit of a chuckle as he waited for the woman to come up with something he might have a chance of copying. “So… Why did you choose long range then if most prefer short range?”

Alice couldn’t help but laugh at that comment, looking at the other as she swayed ever so slightly on the spot, “I think that has to be the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me.” Alice moved closer to the other, moving his hands on the stick to make sure he had the right hold, nudging his feet to get his stance right too. “I like the fact it gives me power even though I’m at a distance, I don’t have to get up close to attack, I can have more movement. It also gives me an advantage because I’m a safe distance from claws and fangs.”

Alec could obviously tell he was walking far too fast for the other but didn’t stop or still his stride in the least. After reading the first word, he stopped. “So should I even bother reading this when you can just tell me what the issue is?”

“No, it was basically telling you to stop walking so damned fast so I could keep up with you. Not all of us are gifted with being six foot.” She commented, feeling like she was looking up to the other when she spoke to him. “The issue is that I was assigned to help you on your mission, I just wanted to ask you what you have so far?”

“I’m not creepy, princess.” Beau said, taking a drink and looking at her, the hint of a smirk on his face. “And I’ll have you know that I was not, in fact, looking around so I wasn’t aware I was next to the only open seat in the house.” He shrugged. “And usually when a lovely lady sits next to me they want a free drink.”

“That’s what someone creepy would say.” She teased, placing an order for her own drink before focusing her attention back onto the other Shadowhunter. “Well you should know by now that I’m not your average lovely lady, I’m far better.”

“You know. Amusing as that thought is I’m having the hardest time picturing our Oakley poised on some little poof stool sipping tea and eating cakes or something.” The hulking mass that was Oakley would look ridiculous in such a setting. “Oh trust me, Alice. I  used to think I was safe cause I was his twin. Boy was I wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. You’re not safe. Trust me. You are not safe.” He smiled at her, laughing again. “We’re gonna change that anyways. get him to like you. I’ll…drag him by his ears…or something.”

“I have a very clear image of him that way in my head right now and I wish I could share it with you because it’s amusing me greatly.” Alice chuckled, because Oakley was the biggest out of him and Thorin and the idea of him sat with all of the smaller housewives, well it was a quite the image to conjure up in her head. “He can do his worst, I’m not scared of him.” She commented, holding her chin up because she wasn’t going to let her brother scare her into running from her other brother if she somehow managed to piss him off. “I might be smaller but I bet I’m just as scary as him when I’m pissed.” Alice laughed, taking a hold of her brothers hand as she moved closer to the bed he was lying in, “W’ll work something out, it’s me and you we need to fix first but before we do that, you really need to get some more rest, Thorin. I’ll stay right here while you do- I promise.”

“Between you and me I don’t think Oakley does gossip sessions at all. Too busy beating the shit out of some poor training dummy.” He winked, joking. Oakley could have fun….just had to work hard to get him there first. “I claim your words. Now you can’t take them back.” He stuck his tongue out at her and closed his eyes, tired. “Maybe some day you will. He likes me. I’l talk to him about it. For all we know he might love the idea.” He smiled. “You’ve never been punched by a mad Oakley have you?”

“Maybe that’s what he wants you to believe, he say’s he’s going to do some training but in reality he’s sitting with the housewives of Idris, sipping tea and well- spilling the tea.” She teased, wiggling her eyebrows at her brother as a smile made it’s way onto her face at the sheer thought of Oakley doing just that. “Fine. Fine. You win.” She exclaimed, holding her hands up in defeat, Alice shrugged, because she wasn’t sure if her other brother would love the idea of the two of them getting to know one another, she always got the feeling that Oakley was never her biggest fan. “We’ll see- as for the not being punched by him thing. One, I’m his little baby sister, he’d never punch me. Two, I’d punch him back just as hard if not harder. And three, I don’t think I’ve had a conversation with him long enough to inflict that sort of reaction.”

Which, we both know is Oakley but don’t tell him I said that.” He laughed gently. “You clearly were not informed of how words work. Once said you can never take back.” He tutted at her. “Well, if it makes you feel better that’s pretty much Oakley in a nutshell anyways…” Another laugh. “How about you go and stomp on his foot. I don’t know about you but I am not putting myself in that line of fire. No way no how.” He tapped Alice’s knee, grin nearly shit eating. “But I’m your dumbass.”

“You’re in luck, me and Oakley don’t exactly have weekly gossip sessions, so your secret is safe with me.” Alice glared at her brother, crossing her arms over her chest, “I’m well aware of how words work, Brother. And you can totally take them back, especially when they’re just tentative and not set in stone.” Alice chuckled lightly, though the laughter didn’t quite ring the way it normally did, “Yeah, I guess it is. I just wish I could have a do over with him as well as you-.. baby steps.” Because she hoped that she’d get the chance to rekindle the relationship with her other brother, just like what she was doing with Thorin. “Oh I would totally stand on his foot, I’m not scared of him.” She told the other, sitting up straight before rolling her eyes at her brother, “Yeah, you are.”

It felt good to be back in New York. Weird as it was to say that. It still smelled like shit. Was still just a fraction too loud for his personal comfort. But it felt like home. And Beau hadn’t felt at home in well over three years. Not since losing Raphi. His visit to the Institute had been brief, only long enough to see Eliza again. He’d been quick to leave again. Mostly to get reacquainted with the city but also to avoid any other familiar faces. He’d taken up shop at a bar on the edge of town, nursing a drink and trying not to draw attention to himself. He barely looked over at the person who opted to sit next to him. “I’m not going to buy you a drink.”

“I love how you just assume I’m going to ask you to buy me a drink just because I’ve sat down, I don’t know if you’ve noticed but this bar is busy and this is one of the only seats available. I mean- there are some over there but the guy’s look a little creepy-... more creepy than you, Cassanova.”

“Jeez, watch your fire messages, yeah?” Alec caught it midair. “And why even send one. We’re literally three feet apart.” He rolled his eyes and began to read it.

“Well you weren’t paying attention to me and now you are, I say my plan worked.” Alice commented as she continued to trail after the other, her short legs seeming to be running after the others long strides.

“Well come on; people are stupid.” He pointed out because they always seemed to look for the bad in others, never the good first. Lucas found his lips mimicking her expression, drawing up into a grin of his own. “Again; anything that is likely to kill or hurt me, we should probably stay away from but I’m good for a bit of one on one combat or whatever it is.” Lucas gave a shrug, looking a little curiously as he was handed a stick. “You do know I’m not a dog so I won’t play fetch right?”

“You’re not wrong.” Because she had been in a feud with her family for so long, it had ruined her years growing up and she almost let it come between her relationship with her brother, they were on the path to smoothing things over now but it was still going to take a lot of work. “They maybe you should stay away from me, I can be pretty lethal- or so I’ve been told.” She teased the other lightly, trying to think of some simple combat moves that the other would be able to do without hurting himself. “You could have fooled me with those puppy dog eyes.” She chuckled, continuing to tease the other as she pushed a small button on the trident she kept in a holster, allowing it to extend to give her a range she was comfortable with. “It’s your weapon- a lot of people like to use short range weapons, but my speciality is long range.”

“Dorkin…Did you just call me Dorkin? Alice how old are you again? I wasn’t aware you’d reverted to ten again.” He smirked at her, highly amused at her choice of nickname. “And it’s too late. They’re mine now. Can’t take your words back from me anymore.” He chuckled softly. “Tell me about it. Sometimes Oaks says something and it catches me off guard. Like. Did you know he liked banana bread? I didn’t!” I had been a strange surprise but there was the hint of sadness behind it too. Maybe he didn’t know his brother as well as he thought he did. “Now I kind of want to see him bark. Just once. Like a dog. Think he’d be up for it if I asked?” Another laugh although this one was tinged with a hint of sadness. “I’m a lab. You’re a Corgi. It’s set in stone now. No changing it!”

“Dorkrin actually, but both work. And it totally suits you.” Alice stuck out her tongue at her brother when he commented on her age, “You have no right to question my age with some of the things that come out of your mouth, brother. You’re worse then me, you’re five.” She retorted, because Thorin definitely had a softer nature out of him and Oakley and it showed in his words, she should have known that if one of them was going to come after her that it’s be Thorin. “I didn’t sign them over to you, so I totally can. They’re still in the air, there to take back if needed.” She quipped, not letting her brother win, even if he was the one sitting in a hospital bed because of her stubborn behaviour. “No, I did not. But let’s not forget that me and Oakley weren’t and aren’t exactly the best of friends. I don’t think I know anything about him other than he’s too grumpy, too serious and has the need to boss people around like he’s in charge.” Alice shrugged, because when it came to the twins she did know more about Thorin then the other, but that was because Thorin was more open with her- would talk when he had the time, even if it was for only a few minutes. Oakley just seemed to look at her like she was stupid, like she didn’t belong with them. “Stamp on his foot and I’m sure he’d make a noise close enough to a bark.” She shook her head fondly at her brother as he named their four legged counterparts, “You’re a dumbass, you do know that right? But fine, you’re a lab and I’m a corgi.”
