Hello! I’ve been reading some of your tips and they are very useful and informative! I’m starting up my art business and shop but I feel like I’m so disorganized and I don’t know exactly all the right steps to take, like creating a business plan, and the marketing aspect of it. I was just wondering how you started up at the very beginning, did you just wing it or did you have a step by step plan set up? Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Hi there! Glad to hear the tips are helping! I kinda half-winged it while reading lots of blog posts and books on the subject and tweaked as I went (my attitude is that I’ll learn as I do!) I’m hoping to write my own blog post soon about business plans, branding, and marketing, but for now, here are some links that might help:

Dream Business Plan: The Five Numbers You Need to get Intimate With by Creative Hive (in general a really good blog to follow and has lots of tips on planning and marketing!). The TL;DR here is to calculate how much money you’d like your business to make in a year, then, based on your profit margins, calculate how many things you’d have to sell (or how many shows you’d have to table at, etc) to reach that goal. Adjust your goals or your pricing if necessary.

How to Prepare for Your First Artist Alley. You may have already seen this since you’re sending me an ask, but this blog post outlines the steps I took in the order I did them to get my art business up and running, so this may be helpful if you’re not sure where to start. “Creating a production schedule” is probably the most important thing I did that keeps me on track even now.

Keeping Track of Inventory. This is maybe the second most important administrative activity that I do to keep my business organized. Doing this helps me know if I’m about to run out of a particular piece of merchandise and that I should reorder soon.

Taxes for Freelances 101 by @kalidraws. It’s a bit of a pain, but I highly recommend learning the basics of taxes for freelancers because there’s some record-keeping you’ll have to do when tax time comes around. It’s way easier to record as you go rather than try to look up all the necessary numbers later! This post might be a good place to start.

I hope this helps get you started! Setting up your art business is complicated stuff, but you can do it!
