cheerleading for beginners ♡ ゚𓂃 🎀📣
hi dollies!! happy new years! i know it has been a while since i last posted but i am finally going to tell you some tips on cheerleading (as someone who joined in junior year of highschool) before we begin, it is important for me to say this is what works for me. not every cheer team for every school is the same, this is just what i learned from my personal experiences of cheering and what i have learned works for me.
for background i do sideline cheer. i have done football cheer for one year and basketball cheer for two years as i am currently a senior in highschool. to answer part of your ask, it's not too late to join!! if you really want to join cheer, do it! although i have only done football cheer for one year, the memories i have made during that time are probably one of the most fun and exciting moments i've ever experienced and i would highly recommend joining cheer if you are interested. but first, you must get down some of the basics for cheer.
in cheer, movements must be sharp and precise! make sure your movements are sharp by tightening up your muscles. this can help make your motions not look sloppy and effortless. additionally, going over basic motions of cheer can help during tryouts. high v, low v, touch down, candles, T, broken T, etc!
one of the most important things to have during cheer tryouts is confidence. cheerleading is all about cheering loudly with pride so be loud!! try not to cower and make yourself appear smaller. even if you make a mistake, smile through it and fix the mistake! even without any prior cheer experience, i was able to make the team not only because of my motions, but because of the confidence i showed to the judges during auditions, and the sharpness of my motions. i know it is easier said than done to not be shy, but being loud and confident while cheering is one of the best things you can do. with confidence, do not forget to smile when you cheer. not only does it make the words come out better, you'll look more presentable and it is often times required that you must smile when you cheer.
in cheer, jumps are required for us to do. with these jumps however, it is highly important to stretch properly, especially if you're doing a jump like a toe touch or a herkey which both require flexibility and sharpness to do. stretches that focus on hamstrings, hips, & the calves can help with these jumps.
workouts such as cardio, ones that target the core, arms, or legs can be a huge help with things such as stunting regardless of your position in stunting (base, flyer, or spotter) flyer (the person in the air), bases (lift and support the flyer during stunts), and spotters (help with balance and catches) some exercises that can help include push-ups, pull-ups, cardio, jump squats, planks, russian twists.
thank you for reading <3 i hope you'll try out for cheer!
