this was on a whim with my friends, i was intrigued by the "sci fi dog doo wop punk" header. the music wasn't totally my cup of tea but their singer had great energy (i do think the drummer should have gone full furry).

the rest of the show was interesting - imo the best act we saw was the sleight of hand magician, he was super talented/skilled! interesting night out.

this was so much fun, I got scraped up in the mosh pit (it was small, because opener), then left so I could get back to my friend's house with enough time to hang out

we love some unapologetically raunchy metal! i'm glad i was able to make it in to see this.

Cabaret

broadway production @ the Kit Kat Club (August Wilson Theatre), NYC

we got the tickets *specifically* to see orville peck as the emcee. for whatever reason, orville peck did not perform that matinee. i'm still hugely disappointed -- i'm a big fan, i really wanted to see how my perception of him as fairly masculine translated into a character i've seen played as more twinky. they were offering refunds/reschedules but given nyc is uhhh far away from me that wasn't happening.

that said, the understudy did a great job and Eva Noblezada as sally bowles was 10/10 incredible force of nature. tbh if i hadn't had the whole orville peck thing going on it would have been worth it to just see her.

the staging in the round worked well, a lot of times they had the actors facing each other so each side saw 1 face at a time. i did think the 1st act was stronger - the 2nd got a bit abstract with the club dancers changing into drab suits and the emcee working as? impersonating? the train conductor.

the dancing/costuming seemed way raunchier than the tour i saw in 2016, and the casting/makeup also was more diverse. personally loved that, i think it played more to the queer atmosphere that probably was pre-wwii berlin with all the research into medical transition etc. they had a fat actress, 2 characters that were made up to be trans (more or less explicitly, like a more masc body type person cast into the group of girl dancers, i have no idea how to phrase this not knowing the actor's gender).

revival touring production @ Bass Hall, Ft. Worth

this is the revival that genderswapped some roles - notably Robert -> Bobbie (she's still straight tho so all the girlfriends -> boyfriends). half the show I spent thinking about how gorgeous Bobbie is tbh.

it was, generally, great. the set did some fun stuff that I think worked well for how abstract the setting can be. joanne: inspiring, incredible. "Getting Married Today" was one of the funniest performances I think I've ever seen in a musical (thank you Matt Rodin as Jamie, your menty b was incredible).

finch is of of course the reason I drove down to south lake even if i did manage to miss the 1st 2 songs. perfection through silence and what it is to burn still feel religious in person.

i don't really know hawthorne heights but they're on their 20th anniversary tour (?) and the singer was super appreciative of it all. so earnest. (won me over)

Only Love tour w/ Flyana Boss @ Grand Sierra Resort, Reno

one of the few times I've possibly enjoyed a new-to-me opener more than the main act?? or the whiskey hit at the right time. flyana boss is apparently the two who were doing the running + rapping videos that went viral but they were VERY fun.

kesha was also incredible but i forgot (??) that so many of her hits are from those first 2 albums and are the ones that i never listen to. love to see her living her best life on her own and working in some of the weirder shit. praying, fine line, and rainbow all nearly made me cry.

someone had a sign that said "you made me bi" and i love that for them.

a lot of the time when i am browsing @doyouknowthismusical i am incredibly surprised by what musicals are generally unknown or even unheard of among theatre enjoyer circles here on tumblr.com so i thought i would put my musical theatre degree to good use by creating an introductory playlist to some of the musicals that need a little more love on this site

a general guide to the criteria on which songs & shows are included:

all of these shows, at the time of posting, have at least a 50% combined result on their respective doyouknowthismusical poll of "no, never heard of it" and "no, but i've heard of it"

most of these shows are notable in some way, whether that be commercial success, critical acclaim, their place in the broadly perceived musical theatre "canon", by containing at least one song that has achieved widespread popularity, or by being something of a cult classic among theatre enjoyers

some shows do not fit any of the above criteria and i snuck them in because i personally like them or think they contain a banger tune that i want to use this opportunity to selfishly plug x

some shows which fit the general eligibility criteria are not included because i either dislike them (it's my spotify profile i'm allowed to be biased) or i don't know them well enough myself to pick two sample songs (pobody's nerfect)

each show (apart from 3 of my biased little sneaks) is represented by 2 songs. usually i have tried to balance a particularly well known song with a personal fave that may or may not be a deeper cut, but sometimes i've just done, frankly, whatever the fuck i please

the playlist is sorted in ascending order of nicheness according to the collective judgement of tumblr.com's musical theatre department, but i strongly recommend listening on shuffle so that you can really surprise yourself and discover something new. and, as with any good MT playlist, experience horrendous levels of stylistic and emotional whiplash along the way

finally i LOVE helping people discover new musical theatre songs (i am quite literally a professional freelance repertoire coach. i will do this shit for £20 an hour if ya nasty) so please feel free to drop me asks or DMs if you particularly love anything you discover through this playlist because it will make my dayyyy :)))

When We Were Young

Finch, Michelle Branch, Sum-41, blink-182, Green Day, Rise Against, Simple Plan, Goldfinger, the Offspring, Citizen, Good Charlotte @ Las Vegas Festival Grounds

in day order i guess? honestly it was super wild seeing all these bands/musicians that were huge on the radio or otherwise just everywhere when i was in middle/high school and finch is the only one i've really kept up with.

skipped some bands i knew i didn't particularly like enough to see again (yellowcard, new found glory, plain white tees)

missed some because of conflicts (something corporate - stuck in the id line; bowling for soup, less than jake, lit - all during other bands)

sum-41, the offspring, rise against all great live even if i don't know all that much of their catalog. they still know how to go hard.

simple plan, blink-182, good charlotte all hit way different as an adult lol, like "i'm just a kid, life is a nightmare" it still is in some ways but that song always felt like it was from a place of little agency. also blink's banter is 90% "travis fucked your mom" and "mark's dick" and frankly boring.

green day really exceeded my expectations tho - billie joe armstrong is a fully chaotic bi and i love it. my favorite is the woman he brought up to sing a little: she took the mic and rocked it, and then did a stage dive to leave. icon.

lows: 90 degrees in the sun all day, having to walk 2 miles back to my hotel, the line to get in was absurd

highs: really living a teenage dream, did not sunburn, seeing so many bands it made the ticket worth it, my friend's friend who was pumping breast milk was very hardcore.

Janelle Monae

The Age of Pleasure tour w/ Dreamer Isioma and The Celestials, Nana Kwabena @ Bill Graham Civic Auditorium

PHENOMENAL

the openers were fun

janelle was impeccable. the story being told. the costumes. the horn section. the melding of the old and new songs.

this was janelle monae at their best. and being close enough to see their expressions and the sweat beading on their brow. standing without a lot of walking on the cement (and the bass volume) dampened my experience a little bit t b h but still incredible (actually in retrospect i think also being a little high dampened my emotions enough that i wasn't as ecstatic as my friend was and i'm a little sad about that. but it will always be worth the trip to see janelle monae.

past selves tour w/ moontower @ cornerstone (berkeley)

incredibly joyful energy and felt incredible to have adam (lead singer) talk so openly about being bi and coming out later in his 20s. would see again, they're fun!

not as into moontower musically but very into this pic I caught at the right moment (also another bi lead singer who would have thought! he dressed like a slightly queer michael cera in arrested development tho there's a hint)
