samisa college marching band au. move in day
Misaās a freshman, he gets to move into the dorms early because of auditions and camp. Returning vets are always forced to help rookies move in, the regular move-in crews arenāt there to help yet. Heās not sure where to go for his keys but sure enough, thereās a loud boy around his age already grabbing his cart of clothes and school supplies and rolling it towards a building Misa doesnāt think is the right one. The boy introduces himself as Dick, weird but alright, then asks Misa, āWhat are you?ā
Misa stumbles out a short introduction, just his name and year. āNo, idiot. What are you, what instrument do you play?ā Oh, duh, Misa thinks. āIām a baritone.ā
āSick man, me too! Itās your lucky day,ā Dick says shoving at Misaās shoulder in excitement. Misa isnāt sure whatās lucky but heās not going to question it, itās too early in the semester to piss off a vet.
They eventually get to Misaās dorm and roll all of his stuff inside, and Misa turns to thank Dick for his help, but instead of leaving, he finds Dick already digging through his things, starting to unpack, but mostly digging through his things. āHave you memorized the audition music yet?ā Dick asks.
āOh, yeah, mostly I think,ā Misa responds kind of weirded out but still allowing his stuff to be rummaged through until Dick pulls out Misaās music folder from his backpack. Dick opens it and shuffles through the music until pointing at a measure and shoving the sheet towards Misa. āWell, unlearn this, itās wrong.ā
āYeah, dude, youāll be locked for a spot if you ignore this sharp and this half note.ā
āOk, thanks,ā Misa isnāt sure if he believes him or not, but he seems to know whatās up.
Dick stays watching Misa unpack, not really helping, but piping up on his choice of decor and where he puts posters. Misa thinks hes just trying to get out of helping others move in, but he doesnāt really mind, maybe itāll be nice knowing someone in his section before auditions. Once he makes his bed, Dick hops up from the university provided desk chair and sprawls out on Misaās fresh sheets. āDude this bed sucks. Honestly your whole dorm sucks, I forgot how bad they are.ā
Misa hums and shrugs, it doesnāt really bother him. The only thing heās actually worried about is making it into the band, but maybe with Dickās advice he can relax now. āWhat dorm are you in?ā Misa asks just to fill the silence.
āNah Iām not in a dorm. Iām a brother, Iām living in at Sig Chi.ā
āOh cool,ā Misa responds, not too sure what heās talking about.
āYeah, you should totally get dinner with us tonight. Wait, are you rushing? We canāt then.ā
āIām not,ā Misa says, still a bit confused.
āSick, then letās grab dinner. I can show you how much better my room is than yours after.ā Dick teases with a wink. Misa doesnāt put up a fight at all and follows Dick across campus to what he pieces together as his frat house. Itās nearly exactly as he imagined inside. Dick doesnāt really introduce him to anyone, but explains his presence by saying that heās a band friend. Thereās a dozen pizza boxes on the table and Dick takes an entire box all for himself and leads Misa up the stairs to his room.
āNot everyoneās back on campus yet, itāll be more filled up here after rush in like a week,ā he explains. Dickās room is weirdly empty and undecorated for someone so loud about Misaās place, but Misaās keeping his mouth shut still. Dick has a gaming console set up though, which catches his eye.
After eating the whole pizza themselves, they game way too late into the night. Misa stops trying to appease Dick once the controller is in his hand and kicks his ass at every game they play. By the 4th round, Dick is accusing him of cheating and Misa doesnāt even bother defending himself. Heās getting sleepy though. One look at his watch makes Misa panic, he hasnāt practiced his music all day and heās also not sure how far away his dorm is from here or to the music building. Dick mustāve noticed his anxiousness because heās asking if he wants to go to bed. Misa says yeah, but then Dick is saying that he can sleep in his bed here. āI swear I like just washed the sheets.ā
That, alongside promises that heāll walk him back to his dorm early tomorrow and then they can show up and practice together before auditions, Misa agrees. āI donāt think I have a roommate yet, but if you feel me crawl into bed with you just ignore it.ā Dick says as he gets comfortable in the other, sheetless bed across the room. Misa canāt believe this guy is real, but heās in college marching band so what can he expect. He goes to sleep wondering if everyone in band acts like this or just Dick.
āWake up sleeping beauty, todayās the big day.ā Misaās mind shoots awake but his body doesnāt and Dick is shaking him up. āCāmon, youāre going to have to become a morning person really fast if you make it in. 7am rehearsals every day!ā Dick teases, Misa groans.
They go together to Misaās dorm. He was right, this place sucks, Misa thinks. He changes clothes and grabs his baritone and they head to the music building. āIf you make it in, you should be my new roommate, Iām scared youāre going to sleep through every practice and game day.ā Dick says, Misa ignores him.
They walk in together and itās already packed with people and noise. Dick is greeted by seemingly everyone, Misa learns he also goes by Dickie and Sam, a much more normal name, and he also gets to meet the other baritones. They find an empty practice room and run through the material a few times over, Misa is shocked at how good Dick is, he isnāt even looking at the music. Dick reminds him about the corrections he made yesterday and they play through it again. They go back towards the lobby once Misa feels ready, Sam doesnāt seem anxious at all, itās almost admirable if it wasnāt also annoying, but Misaās also grateful that Samās so confident in them both. Itās not long until theyāre separated, Misa with the other rookies and Sam with the vets. He needs to focus now, but even after the little bit theyāve spent together, the room seems both louder and quieter without him there. By the time theyāre called to attention, heās eager to see who else makes it, to get to perform in front of the big crowds again, and even more eager to get back next to Sam.
