Prev | Part 6
Servant: Your highness, a party of adventurers has answered your call for help.
King: Excellent. What are they like?
Servant: One of them is a dragon-lady.
King: Interesting. Those are rare around these parts.
Servant: Another is a goblin paladin.
King: Not a role you usually see goblins in.
Servant: A third is a purple-skinned tiefling.
King: I didn't even know they come in that color.
Servant: The last one is a sapient gelatinous cube.
King: What. How did these four even meet?
Servant: They met in a tavern two hours ago, apparently.
Queen: My love, please return to bed.
King: *pacing* Why would a gelatinous cube come to a tavern? Can it even get drunk? How did it fit through the doors?
All-cubes party
Which character would you play?
Dragon-lady
Goblin paladin
Purple-skinned tiefling
Sapient gelatinous cube
Hypothesis debunked.
I'm not even disappointed about being wrong, I love that it's kinda evenly balanced?
(The Dragon-lady got my vote too lmao, shouldn't have underestimated the amount of lesbians and strong-woman-kinners on this site)
Yes yes i know love is love. But they are still killing CHILDREN. over this.
*takes the hand of a period drama writer gently* A queen consort is not a queen regnant. A dowager queen is not a queen regnant either.
There is very little intrinsic institutional power in queenship. The power a consort, dowager, or queen mother has depends mostly on how much the reigning sovereign (usually a man) is willing to grant her. Needing a queen to serve as regent is exceptionally rare, and the regent is more often a male relative.
I know this is a bit of a bummer. I'm sorry.
For clarity:
Queen regnant: woman who rules in her own right, not on behalf of someone else.
Regent: Someone who temporarily assumes the powers of the monarch on account of the monarch being too young or too incapacitated to govern.
Queen consort: Woman who is married to the monarch.
Dowager queen: Woman who was married to the monarch. The monarch is dead, and she is owed support as his widow.
Queen mother: Woman who is the mother of the monarch. Usually the dowager queen, though there are exceptions if there isn't a straight line of succession.
Some examples from the British monarchy (preferably recent when I can think of any):
Queen regnant: Elizabeth II. She was the eldest child of King George VI, and her only other sibling was her sister (the British throne used male-preference primogeniture for the line of succession until 2015, so any younger male siblings would have inherited it before her), so the throne passed to her on her father's death.
Regent: Richard III. Younger brother to Edward IV and uncle to Edward's sons, Edward V and Richard of Shrewsbury (apparently they liked a naming tradition at that point), who were 12 and 9 respectively when their father died. Strictly speaking, this meant they were first and second in line for the throne when their father died, with Richard III being third in line, but because Edward V wasn't old enough to rule by himself, his uncle became regent. He took them to the Tower of London for safety and then something mysterious happened to them both and he begrudgingly accepted the throne (he very clearly murdered them).
Queen consort: Queen Camilla, wife of King Charles III (the current king) and therefore queen consort.
Dowager queen: Possibly Queen Camilla in future. As second wife of Charles III and not mother to either of his sons (William and Harry both being sons of Charles III and Princess Diana), then if Charles predeceased Camilla, she would become solely a dowager queen, not also queen mother. (Side note: I couldn't think of any historical dowager queens who weren't also queen mothers off the top of my head, so after a bit of Wiki'ing I can tell you the last one for the British throne was Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, wife of King William IV and aunt of Queen Victoria; when William IV died without any children to inherit, the throne passed to his brother's daughter, Victoria.)
Queen mother: Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, queen consort of King George VI and mother of Queen Elizabeth II. When her husband died and their daughter Elizabeth inherited the throne to become Queen Elizabeth II, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon became officially known as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (usually queen mothers to the British throne are just styled as Her Majesty Queen [first name], but as navigating these last few sentences has probably convinced you, it would quickly get confusing if her and her daughter were both "Queen Elizabeth"). She was Queen Mother for longer than anyone else in British history, surviving her husband by 50 years until she died in 2002 at the age of 101, so if someone from the UK talks about "the Queen Mother", they're probably talking about her.
this pride month i want everyone to consider the benefits of abolishing the sex binary
furthermore, abolish the government systems that require people to categorize themselves into gendered categories. why do y'all need to know that.
no more assigning babies a legal sex at birth. i feel like this should go without saying, but no more surgeries on intersex infants. no more surgeries on intersex children. embrace intersex traits as natural. because they are.
no more gendered dress codes. no more gender markers on passports, driver's licenses, ids. i'm not talking about "adding x" or "adding a third category" i'm talking about no more categories, period. why does the government need to know what my genital situation is? why does the government feel the need to assign me a sex on the basis of genitals? why does the cop who pulled me over need to see an m, or an f, or an x?
no more "gender is a social construct, sex is the thing that's binary." sex is not binary. abolish the idea that it is. normalize conversations about intersex traits. being intersex is natural. the sex binary is a thing imposed by the state.
no more gendered sports. if you really care about equity, sort people into categories based on skill level and athleticism, not gender or sex. the concept that there are only two sexes and that one is inherently weaker than the other is pseudoscience. the male/female hunter/gatherer dichotomy is not based in fact, and is a product of modern sexist cultural biases. one gender is not inherently subservient to the other. people are not inherently different on the basis of sex or gender. it is just more complicated than that.
the concept of multiple genders and sexes beyond the man/woman male/female dichotomy has existed as long as humans have existed. the sex binary only serves to benefit the patriarchy. the gender binary only serves to benefit the patriarchy. continuing to impose it just controls (and harms) the people it forcibly categorizes.
i'm not asking for the end of gender, i'm calling for an acknowledgement of gender and sex that understands the infinite diversity of the human species. i'm suggesting an end to binary systems that only benefit the ruling class. just think about it. okay?
Important Fox Update
So a few days ago I noticed a fox friend running through my yard. I was able to snap this photo.
I called him Milo.
I thought he was a lone wolf who chose my neighborhood as his domain.
But Milo is not alone.
Milo is a papa.
He and his lady fox have three little foxes!
I went from never having seen a fox to FIVE foxes playing in my backyard.
The three kiddos were wrestling. Their opening move is to do this cat-like superjump and then dive bomb into their sibling. Then they roll around. And then a high speed chase ensues.
One of the little foxes came near the house and I got a few closer photos.
I love the little black socks.
I'm going to need to figure out a lot more fox names.
Okay... I've thought about the names.
Papa Milo and Mama Mia.
And for the kits... Marian, McCloud, and Michael J.
i love caitlyn back shots
TIL that the reason lead levels in children’s blood have dropped 85% in the past thirty years is because of an unknown scientist who fought car companies to end leaded gasoline. He also removed it from paint, suggested its removal from pipes, and campaigned for the removal of lead solder from cans.
via ift.tt
Yep. It also correlates extremely strongly with an increasing decrease of violent crime. One of the symptoms of low level constant lead exposure is increased aggression and volatility.
“Unknown scientist”? That was Clair Cameron Patterson.
Gas companies are still so mad at him he’s “unknown scientist”, know his name
Daily reminder that health and safety standards like these are what politicians mean when they talk about “deregulation.”
Patterson died 5 December 1995.
Petition to make his date of death a Tumblr holiday celebrated by talking about cool shit the gas and petroleum industries don’t want us to know about, and fighting to continue his work.
Happy Clair Cameron Patterson day!
Oh, hey, it’s almost Clair Cameron Patterson day!
i love my fans 💚
(for context anon (blank account) is trying to figure out how to misgender me)
she's been trying to guess my gender for 3+ hours so now we're talking about eels 💚
MLK was a star trek fan
I feel like not enough people realize that people under enormous strain act really really fucking Weird
things humans are known to do when stressed:
-hallucinate
-cry over what seems to be small things
-become furiously angry over what seems to be small things
-hit a self destruct button over and over again
-lose all sense of reality
-becoming straight up unable to communicate
-view every situation as life or death
-experience delusions/become vulnerable to irrational worldviews
-perceive hostility where none exists
-become extremely nauseous and/or throw up
-stop engaging in sleeping/eating/basic hygiene
-stop processing sensory input
-process way too much sensory input all at once
-lash out at others/themselves
-and more!
being able to recognize when a human (ie. you or another person) is so stressed out they cannot think clearly is VERY important for conflict resolution and diffusing emotional crisis. highly recommend trying to train yourself at being able to recognize that state of panic- there is a point in which logic and rationality is useless and you have to address the underlying emotional issue first. knowing that saves everyone a lot of pain and struggle.
