Holes in my shoes and I still splash in the puddles...
Something that I’ve learnt from my many years of struggling with depression is that it’s never really gone. Even at times when I feel good and healthy, I’m still always at risk of relapse. So far, I’ve experienced relapses every couple of years and one of the many reasons that happened is that I didn’t take my depression seriously enough. No one likes being mentally ill, so once depression doesn’t feel too present, I tend to ignore it. I quickly put myself under a lot of pressure, because everyone else does too, and since my depression isn’t acting up in that particular moment, I don’t feel like I have an excuse to take things easy. I feel like a liar and very disrespectful of other people’s hard work, so I push myself all the time to keep up with everyone. I don’t want to cause trouble because of something no one can see. While every single time seems still manageable to me, those situations keep stacking, until I can’t deal with the amount of stress anymore. Then I fall apart. This is a reminder to me and everyone else who’s in a similar situation: by accepting your depression and keeping it in mind, you’ll be able to live a healthier life in the long run. It’s difficult to miss out on certain things or to say “no” to friends because of something that isn’t an immediate problem. But every time you decide to take care of your needs, you will keep depression away a bit longer.
…holy shit

2016 BOOKS YOU NEED TO ADD TO YOURS LIST > Girl Against the Universe by Paula Stokes
“You ever feel like something is eventually going to happen, no matter how hard you try to fight it?”
Without turning around to look at him, I nod. “Yeah. But for me that something has always been a bad thing.”
these lists of books to read before you die that are full of classics are all well and good but what if you don’t like classics? and what about the ya ones that are just full of popular series? so this is an alternative list of ya books you should read before you die. thanks to everyone who contributed books; i’ve had to miss some off because i’ve got more than 100, so i’ll probably include them on a second list. (also, i’ve not actually read all these books. it’s a group effort)

From Brooklyn, with Love: The VERY BLACK Project.
“The Very Black Project (TVBP) isn’t merely a t-shirt, but a consciousness movement absolutely.”
Birthed in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, in 2014, the concept behind TVBP was driven by late night “Kitchen talks” between artist and cancer survivor André D. Singleton, and Art Director Justin Fulton, who both grew up very black and very gay in America.
Reflecting the very contemporary and, at times, very wounding experiences both Singleton and Fulton have endured, the project’s aim is to “encourage relatable dialogue around the vast experiences of ALL people who have ever felt alienated due to race, sexuality, gender, physical appearance or disability, with a focus on blackness.”
At its core, TVBP shifts the narrative surrounding autonomy and black visibility at a time where black people are incredibly vulnerable. Channeling frustrations and negative experiences into a single bold statement comprised of only two words - two very powerful words - printed on an otherwise plain tote, TVBP is part of the rhetoric central to black people reclaiming of the most visible component of their identities.
“We are using the body as a vehicle for solidarity while asserting a very important social commentary. At its core we believe that to be #VERYBLACK is to be unapologetically proud of who we are in a world that furtively teaches us to hide from our stories and our importance. It’s a true practice in Self-love and healing as a collective and individually. We can all be connected if we try.”

if you want a nice body, go get it. if you want to become a lawyer, study your ass off. if you want nice hair, pick a style and get it done. stop being afraid and motivate yourself. find yourself. find your happiness, because it’s out there waiting for you.
John Grisham is one of my favorites! I was originally worried law and writing would clash too much, but it worked for him and his books are amazing
One of my favorite books is his A Painted House.
