BIG UPDATE BY MARTY'S MODS
EDIT: If you only use ReLight in TS4, hold fire with resubbing. We've discovered a potential compiling error for TS4. If you use it in other games too, then go right ahead and pick it up if you want. It's likely a dx9 problem. Marty knows about it.
---
Pascal Gilcher, the brains behind Marty's Mods, has released a refresh of some of his most popular shaders. RTGI has been updated, and, most excitingly, thanks to recent renewed interest *cough*, ReLight has been updated as well.
ReLight now uses ray tracing, and has introduced sub-surface scattering. Quite a few of the previous options have changed, although the way you position the lights remains the same. You can still use my previous ReLight guide to help with moving the lights, but many of the other settings I go through are obsolete now. Once I've had a chance to have a proper play with the new version I'll create an updated guide.
ReLight has now been incorporated officially into the iMMERSE Ultimate package of shaders, which can be found by subscribing to his Path Tracers tier on Patreon.
If you're updating, make sure to update all the available shaders and files, and update the regular free iMMERSE shaders, because Launchpad has received an update to work with these new versions.
As always, remember to make a backup of your current shaders first in case you want to revert for whatever reason. There are some reports the new Launchpad doesn't play nicely with dx9 games, so you may run into problems with it in TS4, but I haven't tested that myself yet. You can still use dx11 shaders in TS4 by using DXVK to use Vulkan instead of dx9, so that's always an option.
For funsies, here's a comparison of the above shot with/without ReShade.

I finally have my ReShade where i’m happy with it so I figured I’d upload it. This preset was designed off of my own personal preference for something a little bit more bright and colorful with pink/bluish tones while still being perfect for gameplay. This preset is for ReShade 3.0.7
Guide on how to install and use Reshade
You can toggle DOF on and off with the CAPS LOCK key
Pictures must be taken with the PrintScreen key to have the ReShade effects
The preset goes in C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 4\Game\Bin

Sims 4: How to HQ
In the following instructions, you will get the answers to questions like “what is the HQ mod?” “How do I install it?” “What problems can occur?” “How do I make CC HQ-compatible?” and many more, including how to create actions in Photoshop and how to use the batch import/export in Sims4Studio.
The HQ mod was discovered by @alf-si and you can find her instructions HERE. However, as I get tons of messages regarding the HQ mod or some aspects of it, I decided to come up with my own instructions (with permission from alf-si, of course).
What is the HQ mod?!
You may have noticed that many cc artists make HQ-compatible cc now. But what is this all about?
The HQ mod forces the game to use high resolution textures (2048 px instead of 1024 px) for CAS items which results in an enhanced amount of detail of your sims, especially when the cc was created for HQ in the first place. Some of you may know something like that from TS3 already.
Pictures of HQ/no HQ comparison here
How do I install it?
The term ‘mod’ is somewhat misleading since it’s not a game mod that you can simply install and start to play. In contrast to the TS3 HQ mod which was easy to use, there are things to be aware of when using HQ in TS4.
- To set your game to HQ, you must change two lines in the GraphicRules.sgr file (detailed explanation HERE). You can switch between HQ and standard by changing your GraphicRules.sgr file. Simple as that!
- Every cc that is not HQ compatible will make your sim appear completely black. Yes, that sucks. Learn how to convert cc to make it HQ compatible HERE. I strongly advise you to have two mods folders (1 folder with HQ stuff and converted stuff and another folder for playing with everything, HQ and non-HQ).
- You need to have the base game texture replacements by alf-si. Find them HERE (section 2.3.1). She also did HQ replacements for several Eps and SPs.
- You must set sim quality to “very high”. If your system can’t handle that, you won’t benefit from the HQ mod.
Will HQ affect loading times/will it cause lag in gameplay?
The short answer is: most likely, it will, but that depends on your system and the amount of cc you are playing with. Since HQ textures are of a bigger size than regular textures, loading times will increase and it might slow down your game too.
My advice: Use HQ for screenshots only and play without HQ. Two separate mods folders will help with that. I personally do not see any significant difference in loading time and lag between my HQ and non-HQ game, but keep in mind that it can happen. Merging helps a lot!
How do I make my CC HQ compatible?
If you are a cc creator and want to make your CC compatible with the HQ mod, read HERE.
How do I convert CC for HQ (as fast as possible)?
You may already have a huuuuge mods folder with loads of not HQ compatible cc. Every single one of them will make your sim appear completely black, so the only solution is: convert it or don’t use it. “But it’s so much cc to convert” you may say and that’s right! But learn how to convert cc the fastest and most efficient way HERE.
What problems can occur?
Every cc that is not HQ compatible will either make your sim appear completely black or it will remove the shine from your sim. Check if these requirements are fullfilled.
To those following me for Black Desert Online, update the link to House of Vallianth as all future content will be put there. Thanks! :)

Clayifying Hair Tutorial - Technical Version
Ok! So a lot of people have been asking about how I make the alpha hair more clay like so here is a more technical version of the mini tutorial I made a little while ago. It’s quite long so buckle up!
What you will need: Sims4Studio, Photoshop or another similar program that can edit dds files.
1. Download the file you wish to clayify. Move this file into C:\Users\Username\Documents\Sims 4 Studio\Mods. This will enable you to create your new re-texture without the mesh included. On the main screen once you load up S4S you can now select ‘Create CAS Standalone’.
2. Find the hair you just downloaded in the grid of CAS files that come up. Tick ‘CC Only’ to help you find it! Select a recolour of the hair you wish to retexture like so:
And press next!
3. Name the file appropriately and you are now able to access the dds file containing the texture you need to edit. Make sure you can find this file later so put it in it’s own folder.
4. Press Export and name it something like ‘ cadenceBlack’. You should now have a dds file with the texture of the hair you are about to edit. Open up this file in your editing program i.e Photoshop.
5. Re-texture the hair in clay textures, I use these I extracted from the long OR hair. Enable the alpha so you can better see where to place the textures.
6. It’s alpha editing time! Disable the RGB channel so you can better see what you are doing.
Now zoom in and take the normal round brush and fill in the gaps. Our goal here is to solidify the alpha and to get rid of the wispy bits which don’t look very good in clay form and aren’t present on clay hairs anyhow.
7. After it’s all filled in we are left with the ends of the hair.
They look a bit weird now so we need to fill those in with a different brush. And then fill that in with the small circular brush again. Do this for the roots of the hair as well.
Voilà! The main part of the hair is done! Now do steps 6 & 8 to the wispy bits.
Remove some of the wispy bits if they don’t look right so it will make less work when you do the other colours and save!
8. Import the texture you just edited into the package of your new re-texture in S4S. If you don’t import the texture you edited no change will show up.
9. Check it out in game!
9. Now go re-texture it in all 18 EA colours and you are finally done.
A how to re-texture tutorial is in the works!
How to re-texture hair in ts4 using Sims4Studio
Seeing as my other tutorial doesn’t cover how to actually re-texture the hair it assumes you already know how. This one assumes you don’t know therefore will be very basic.
What you will need: A hair you wish to re-texture, Textures with which to re-texture, Sims4Studio(you need an account to download but it is worth it!) to make the package containing your re-texture and a program that can edit dds files such as Photoshop or Paint.net.
1. Download the hair you wish to re-texture, preferably a version actually containing the mesh otherwise you will get a bald headed sim in your 3D preview. Place the file you just downloaded into C:\Users\Username\Documents\Sims 4 Studio\Mods so you can access it in S4S. This will enable you to create your new re-texture without the mesh included. On the main screen once you load up S4S you can now select ‘Create CAS Standalone’.
2. Find the hair you just downloaded in the grid of CAS files that come up. Tick ‘CC Only’ to help you find it! Select a recolour of the hair you wish to re-texture like so:
And press next!
3. Name the file appropriately and you are now able to access the dds file containing the texture you need to edit. Make sure you can find this file later so put it in it’s own folder.
4. Press Export and name it something like ‘[hairname]Black’. You should now have a dds file with the texture of the hair you are about to edit. Open up this file in your editing program i.e Photoshop.
5. Now onto the re-texturing part of the tutorial. When you have the aforementioned file open in PS open up another file containing the textures you wish to use to replace the originals.
6. Now enable the alpha layer so you can more accurately see where to place your new textures.
7. Drag the texture from the file containing the new textures onto the dds containing the original hair texture.
You now have a new layer in your document above your ‘Background’ layer. As you can see it doesn’t quite look right. To rectify this, right click and select ‘Free Transform’.
This will allow you to resize your new layer to fit the part of the hair you are trying to fit this to. Seeing as the bit of texture i’m trying to re-texture is upside down we need to flip the layer upside down, you can do this by going into the edit drop down menu select Transform>Flip Vertical.
This option is really helpful for making hair retextures so I recommend it being enabled. :)
To resize the layer just pull the little arrows that appear when you hover over the edge of the texture so that it fits the original texture.
I don’t know how else to describe this as it’s quite simple. After you have covered all of the visible hair with the new texture flatten the layers and then save your file.
8. Now import the file you just edited into S4S and your 3D model should now have updated with the new texture.
9. Now repeat this process for all 18 EA colours if you are a masochist like me who likes to suffer and save. :’) Or if you’re smart, use actions to recolour the texture so you only have to retexture the hair once instead of 18 times. :’) it will take a lot less time to finish the hair this way.
10. You should check it out in game to see if the texture looks ok! If you are using the EA colours this page is very useful! It also tells you how to order the swatches in colour order. :)
I hope this is useful for some people but it turns out i’m not very good at describing things.
Happy Halloween! 💀🎃👻 I mean, it’s 3am here, but better late than never, right? 😄 Here’s a doodle of Baymax dressed as a Weeping Angel 👀
I promised I’d write up an explanation on how to do my colors for an anon who asked. They are all made using either pooklet‘s Volatile, or Timebomb, or a couple of furbyq‘s colors. A couple of them are really simple, IE. Only putting one color over the original to make it look like that. So if either of you have a problem with me using your colors I’ll take them down :3.
I don’t know how well these will work in Photoshop, I’m no expert. I use Paintshop Pro to do things, so this is the program I’m using to explain. Also I’m using an old version, version 10. So I’m not sure how they’ll work in other versions of PSP but I imagine it’s likely similar.
So, I just spent the whole day trying to make photoshop actions myself. It’s actually really hard to convert some of the Paintshop Pro layer options to Photoshop. Some of them aren’t even included in photoshop at all. But all but 2 came out perfect!
UFO stops at step 8. There’s just no way to duplicate the next steps in photoshop, any attempts to dodge it make the color way lighter than it should be.
Ambrosia isn’t included at all. after running furbyq’s orbit, the next two steps don’t get the color to the right shade, and I don’t even think the steps after those are even possible to put into an action at all. So there are flaws. But Abandon, Cosmic, Deep Sea, Frozen, Maji Bomber, Mistake, October, Radiation, Sewage, and Spectral should come out just like above!
Not sure how they will look on textures other than Remi’s, I never tried, but I can’t image they’d be too different. Just run all these actions over volatile and you should be fine.
BerryNooboos Otherworld Actions
I made 8 new colors! Afterglow, Chemical, Dark Matter, Flux, Quasar, Velocity, Xero Gravity, & Zenith. Yes zero is spelled wrong intentionally. I don’t expect many other people to use these other than myself but I made actions anyway!
