as much as i loved the suselle scenes in this chapter, it almost seems like susie's worldview is narrowing because of it; many of her character traits are noticeably diluted or absent in the ch5 dark world because she is instead laser-focused on noelle.

part of this might be that susie is seeking refuge from the looming specter of the prophecy. it's true that compared to, like, ralsei, susie hasn't showed any fear about what might happen. however, she is still a teenage girl that, until very recently, lacked friends and a sense of purpose in life. she already thinks of the dark world as her "home", after all. maybe she's scared that she'll lose everything when this is all over and is trying to distract herself from that.

but i also think part of it could be susie still needing to understand noelle's feelings. susie doesn't try to wear ribbons for kris or ralsei, so why is noelle different? because with ralsei and kris, she doesn't need to live up to a standard. back in ch1, once she decides to be "nice" and officially joins the party, it soon becomes obvious that they don't care if she teases them or has a rude sense of humor. they're all tied together by fate anyway, so susie sees them as equals, teammates even.

however, i think susie isn't 100% sure yet that noelle isn't out of her league. she thinks, "maybe wearing ribbons and saying 'darn' instead of 'damn' will make her like me more", because she wants to be good enough for her. and when we consider that susie's only in-depth exposures to romantic couples so far have been lanino/elnina and blue/yellow, it makes sense that she believes people in love need to prioritize their significant other above all else (lol).

all this to say, i don't think susie has internalized that noelle genuinely likes her the way she is. from noelle's point of view, her crush that was mostly based on an idealized version of susie has now grown into authentic feelings for a person she has come to know as passionate, determined, brave, and kind. susie supports noelle and inspires her to speak her mind, stand up for herself, and move beyond the expectations people have for her. i really hope susie eventually realizes this and becomes confident in the fact that noelle likes All of her, not just the part that reciprocates her feelings.

sunsets as a major theme in chap 5 because undertale ends on a sunset. susie and noelle walk into the sunset together, happy. this is where the story is supposed to end. ralsei left a piece of pie on the floor of susie's bedroom because this is where the story ends. we're all friends and we're in the places we're supposed to be. but after the sunset darkness always falls. OH MY GOD. dtr as an exploration of what happens after. aftermath of tragedy aftermath of the honeymoon phase of a relationship aftermath of love changing you, for better or for worse. aftermath of childhood fantasies when you're growing up, you're changing. you've changed and you're still trying to tell the same stories, tell them in a way that reminds you of all the fun you used to have. UGGGHHHHH deltarune is so thematically dense i feel like i find a completely new pivotal thread every time i think about it
