One more render, in our library, with the candlestick, oh go on then make it two. Maya, Nuke, cigarettes and wine helped create this. Must sleep now.
Boom, flintlock pistol complete! Low(ish) poly, high detail mission complete, I can rest now, I can finally rest! actually no, straight onto the next project...
Finally added a metal inlay pattern to the grip, hand drawn baroque(ish) patterny thing which despite its crudeness I’m quite pleased with.
Final smoothed (poorly lit) mesh
More Mudbox and mapping for the Barrel and hammer/pan plate, spent ages with these and built the barrel stencil from scratch using tons of bits I’d drawn and found.
On to Mudbox, and more research. I decided to start with the pommel of the gun as it was going to be the most decorative and obvious part.
Researched engraving techniques and 18th century art styles particularly baroque patterns and weapon decoration to get the look I wanted.
Also my first distribution/normal map combo, dist map for the large patterns and normal map for the cross hatch engraving.
Obvious Assassins creed influence thanks to Black Flag taking all my spare time up and infecting my brain.
OK time for a new project, I’m mostly talking to myself here (and possibly my parents, Hi folks!) but I’m a very polite audience of one so I’m happy.
Recent pirate obsession (thanks Black Sails & Black Flag) plus a need to practice creating distribution/normal maps equals piratey flintlock pistol time.
TONS of research went into this and although most of it does not show in the final product it was fun. Basic referenced pistol config but with a few tweaks of my own. Learned how these things actually work before I started which helped loads in getting it to look (mostly) right.
Basic mesh to begin with.
Finito, Lego Judge Dredd. Again tempted with props (lawgiver pistol) but I don't have the time.
Time to step up the texturing - BOOM! all hand drawn from scratch, graphics tablets are the best thing ever.
Somebody stop me making Lego please. Up next, you should be able to guess who this is!
FIN! Tempted to create the infamous rug from little Lego bits but no, that would physically destroy me.
Skip to the end! Jeff and Walter looking pretty good, wanted to do some props. bowling stuff etc but I can't spare the time.
Here's Jeff and Walter, not insanely impressed with Walter, he reminds me of Cartman for some reason. Drawing simplified caricatures of John Goodman has never been one of my skills.
How about a Jeff Lebowski Lego face to cheer you all up on a Monday evening, your welcome.
Ok, next stage of the Lego mission, The Big Legowski.
Using the same model but this calls for some better hair. Jeff Lebowski basically has a massive centre parting curtains type do so I started with that and sculpted it up in Mudbox.
Definitely easier this time around.
Done! I'm not exactly known for my dress sense so these two outfits are the only things anyone has seen me wear recently, made sense to use them.
Not 100% happy but I never am, so I'll either come back to these and fix 'em up later or forget all about it and move on..... if I let myself.
Lego face! not the most amazing pieces of artwork but I genuinely thought I'd forgotten how to draw and haven't even tried for many years so I'm chuffed I still can (in my opinion).
Found it so much easier using a tablet, I think being able to undo every pen stroke gave me masses more confidence!
