     Remus took a deep breath and closed his eyes,      forcing himself to remain patient with the       man-child. "Sirius, you're a wanted criminal. Something as simple as seeing Harry off to school could be  your undoing. Why don't you understand that?"

Lucius nodded. “I know. It is generous. And hardly not at all, because the ministry is in dire need of capable applicants to fill positions left behind. If I turned down someone who was capable— well. That’s very bad for business. And I would hope that of all the things you have ever heard about me, that you would walk out today knowing that I am a businessman first, and everything _else _second. Please sit.” He gestured to a nearby desk and with a chair in front of it.

He sat behind the desk and took out a scrap of parchment and a peacock quill. “What are your skills? And rate them on a scale from one to ten, ten being the most confident, in how good you believe yourself to be at them. There is no point in interviewing you for a particular skill set, as.. when I say we are hiring for everything, that is because we are. If you impress me with what you say, I am confident I can find a position for you. The Malfoy name has pull here- despite my father’s goal of making a mockery out of our current minister- it is well respected.” 

For a full three seconds, Remus was too stunned to speak. He was still playing with the idea that Malfoy was simply doing all of this out of amusement, but it certainly seemed professional enough. Remus decided without a doubt that the older man must not know of his condition, and such kindness was stemming from that ignorance. The werewolf would take advantage of that for as long as possible. "Er-- wandless magic, I'm decent at, maybe-- eight? " Remus stumbled over his words in an attempt to regain himself. He cleared his throat quickly, and continued. "Non-verbal magic, also eight." A pause. Remus cheeks were flushed lightly with pink; speaking positively about himself, most especially to Lucius Malfoy, was not a situation with which he was familiar. "I was good at Defense Against the Dark Arts at school... that's a nine, probably. And I was all right at Charms. Seven for that one. Dueling's an eight. Transfiguration-- five. Healing, six." He looked up, hoping that would be enough. "I'd be happy just sitting at a desk, though, really. Maybe I could work in the Archives, or in some sort of secretarial position?"

"I always try to keep something in just as a backup. Auror training takes a lot, you know. And my gran pops over about five times a week to make sure I’m keeping myself fed, and she usually brings enough food over for three of me." William smiled. He had a regular job, at least, no matter how dangerous it was - he could afford to help out a friend who regularly struggled to get or keep work. Some employers were so stupid.

" Your gran sounds lovely. " Remus grinned and took another bite of the sandwich. "Auror training, eh? I never had the temperament for it, but I admire you. It's hard work, or so James and Sirius say. "

"I am a consultant of sorts." He gestured to the paperwork. "Called in from time to time to offer my advice on various subjects that require my expertise." He gave him a smug smile.  "Now wouldn’t that be ironic.” Lucius shook his head. “Normally yes, that is where they want my work, but right now I’m helping out their human resource department as there are a lot of positions to fill and not a lot of talent for picking the people who are right for the job.” He sat his paper work down on the table and looked to Remus, folding his arms across his chest as he took in the sight of him. He remembered Severus telling him that Remus was the smartest one of the lot, and the least awful. He also spoke of their shared poverty- how he was one of the few that didn’t pick on Severus for it. The ministry lost a lot of people in the previous war, it’d be stupid to not hear some one out for his own enjoyment. The smug look on his face dropped, replaced by a more professional, business like demeanor. “Are you here looking for work? I have time between now and my next interview. I can fit you in, if that’s the case.”

Malfoy was to be his interviewer? It didn't look like there was much a point in even sitting down. Remus deflated, but tried his best not to let it show on his face. Swallowing his disappointment, Remus nodded and looked down.  "That would be very generous of you," he answered quietly. It was entirely possible that Malfoy was required to at least see him, if only for the sake of policy, but Remus was surprised. He had heard quite a bit about the Malfoy family, infamous for their elitist pureblood mania, and Remus knew from experience that those who looked down on Muggleborns were more than likely to not take too kindly to werewolves. The thought occurred to him that perhaps Malfoy had somehow never learned of Remus' condition, that perhaps this could be a clean slate for him. Or, Remus thought with a slightly heightened heart rate, perhaps this was the most dangerous thing he could do to himself. Being in close proximity to one of the Dark Lord's old followers every day could only spell destruction in the long run. Being at the mercy of a Malfoy did not appeal to him in the slightest. Still-- Remus was hardly in a position to refuse a job.
