It’s a part of the updates from the last cba negotiation finally going into effect. they took 2 games away from preseason to update the schedule so it’s more regular season games but the same amount of games overall. It why the season is starting September 30th and the Pens home opener is October 3rd.

As for what they changed, it’s mostly matchup weighting. There’s now a guaranteed 4 games for divisional opponents, 3 for in-conference opponents, and 2 for opponents in the other conference. So the Penguins will play everyone in metro 4 times (2 home, 2 away), everyone in the atlantic division 3 times (split 1, 2 for home/away but it differs per team/opponent who gets the 2 home vs the 2 away), and everyone in the western conference twice (1 home, 1 away).
