For a sketchbook~
They’ve started putting less spice mix in my favourite instant noodles and it is pissing me off SO MUCH.
I shouldn’t be this bothered by it. The difference isn’t even noticeable once cooked; the noodles taste the same. It’s just… it’s just another fucking corner shaved off another fucking product and they add up. Over the past 15-20 years, I’ve watched the quality of premium products slowly drop to match the bargain bin versions with absolutely no price drop. (Some products were always the same, but in others there used to be a very, very noticeable difference – minties, once a high-flavour and crunchy mint chew of perfect texture, are now EXACTLY THE SAME as those ‘put ‘em in your mouth and they dissolve instantly’ bargain bin bullshit chews, for instance.) I’ve watched them slowly lower the weight of products in packets, without reducing the price. I’ve watched them doctor ‘serving sizes’ smaller and smaller to give us less food (and make it look healthier!) for the same price, I’ve watched them put less blueberries in the muffins, less potato chips in the bag, less spice in my fucking noodles, while prices go up and up and up at a rate that is NOT justified by inflation. It’s another corner that probably saves the maggi corporation another few thousand dollars per year and hey, no one will notice, so it’s fine. It’s the standard now. Less spice. Now they can move on and find the next ‘unnoticeable’ corner to cut.
I’m in absolute agreement that this is bullshit. But people should also use it as an excuse to learn to cook more and buy less convenience foods. It doesn’t fix the serving sizes, but at least you know whats in your food and can adjust the flavor manually. I know it’s not always reasonable because it eats up time, but it’s probably better for you.
1) People don’t need an “excuse” to cook. People with the time, money and functional physical body to cook already do it. Most people cook most of their meals at home and pepper in premade meals when strapped for time or energy, and the amount they do it depends on how much time or energy their lives allow them. Dressing up making things inconvenient for people as an excuse to ‘cook more’ like they need some external force to force them to do the same amount of housework that you do is some real privileged bullshit.
2) The ENTIRE POINT of this is the serving sizes. That is what this post is about, it’s about them giving us less food and pretending they’re not. (And then raising the prices anyway ‘for inflation’, at a far higher rate than inflation should suggest, so cutting the amount in packets isn’t an inflation thing, it’s just greed.) Do you think I’m getting a better deal on the chilli powder on my shelf than the chilli powder in my noodle packet? I’m not. They’re ripping us off whether the food is sold together in a packet or as separate ingredients. Whether you cook at home or not solves absolutely nothing, it’s just distracting moralising.
get okay with being some level of burden on others, seriously
you know what’s a real burden? a person that is so scared of leaning on other people that they try to be completely self sufficient and you end up either having to help them indirectly to save their ego or they have to break down in order to receive help, both of which are so much more heavy to the person that loves them than just being leaned on casually
