Ah, ok. [Mason raps his knuckles on his knee as he thinks for a second]
It's...not easy to...explain. I'll try to make it quick, I don't want to take up much of your time. Uh, three years ago I was working in a grocery store. No big chain, just...small town stuff, you know? I think this was in ah...February when this happened.
[Mason sighs and runs a hand through his hair] There was something wrong with the store owner's kid. He was a sixteen year old menace. And-and that was fine until he started bringing his friends into the shop.
They weren't your average teen miscreants, they were...something was wrong with them. I can't really explain it other than...they looked all wrong. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they were disfigured in any way, nothing like that, but...they never stayed the same. I could always tell who they were, but I could only do so by their voices. They...I'd swear to you, on my life, that they changed their looks. They'd get taller or shorter, more muscular or more skinny, even their hair wouldn't stay the same.
It all came to a head one night when I was working alone. They were the only ones in the shop with me, just in the back. Laughing to each other. You know, even though I knew they were shoplifting, I could never bring myself to call them out for it. I mean, they were just kids but they were...terrifying, and I was sure that if i'd tried to stop them...well.
It was the owner's kid who ended up screwing himself over. I feel bad saying it, but I'm glad it wasn't me. I watched him yell at this boy, he was skinny and tall, but I doubt he'd always been like that, for uh...knocking over a display, I think? Horrible hill to die on. And he uh. Did.
[Mason covers his mouth, his voice becoming slightly muffled] I can't describe what they did to that kid. Not like I don't want to, there just really aren't words to explain how someone goes from a human to...that thing in the span of five seconds.
[Mason looks up, he is smiling weakly] They left me pretty much alone. Got out of the whole thing with only one physical scar. Then they just...left. Left town. I did too, actually. After I called the cops.
