Why Zavala Is Actually A Good Leader
This is a mun ramble!!! It will be long!! It will be passionate!!! There will be SPOILERS TO D2!!! You have! Been! Warned!!!
Ok. So. I have... A LOT of thoughts about the way people portray Zavala. Even the game Destiny 2 itself has managed to make these mistakes in the past....
(*coughcoughWARMINDcoughBULLSHITcough*).
And I'm saying... We can do better by Big Blue.
First off. What's his biggest quality? Lots of people say, "hardassedness." "Stubbornness." "Yelling."
When the City was collapsing, the FIRST thing Zavala thought about... Was its people. Not the buildings. Not the weapons armory. Not even the Traveller could keep him from protecting the people he fought for. Zavala CONSTANTLY shows loyalty to the people he leads, guardian or not. His biggest concern is, is everyone going to be okay, and if not, how can we help?
When the Light was gone, did he hide? Did he cower in fear? He could have, and very UNDERSTANDABLY so. Losing immortality is a very scary thing! And he probably was scared out of his mind.
But instead of hiding... He high tailed it to Titan. Sent out a transmission. Made it his FIRST priority to find any Lightbearers left, and being them to one place. All without the Light. All with the threat of death constantly around the corner. Gathering any bit of light he could, so they had HOPE.
That's loyalty to the Light. That's bravery.
The very NEXT thing he did? Admit that he couldn't do this by himself. He needed his fireteam. He admitted that.
Loyalty. Bravery. Honesty.
THESE are the three main traits of Zavala. He may not be everyone's cup of tea. And that's okay. But, he's not the big bad guy who wants everyone not to have fun, either. He just wants people to be safe. Hence the protocols he's set.
SECOND. Zavala is a lot softer than people give him credit for. Zavala loved a mortal woman and stayed faithful by her side to the very end. That kind of loyalty, that kind of love? That's tender and soft. The man knits and crochets, for God's sakes. He also exhibits traits of sarcasm, concern, comradery.
Zavala is not a man who constantly yells, all the time, and is angry. Sure, his job can be frustrating. Sure, he's made out to be the bad guy sometimes. But he's not always mean or angry or brutish.
And third. People use Zavala... As a scapegoat.
When people go "what's the worst vanguard?"(Trick question, they are ALL great) They usually pin it on him because hes too strict for some. When people want an authority figure to step in and antagonize their character for "doing something wrong" that was actually totally protocol, or heroic, they write in Zavala(which is TOTALLY OUT OF CHARACTER BTW). When people need an angry yelling leader who people HATE, they write in Zavala.
All because he's strict to rules that are supposed to keep us alive. All because he follows protocol that was put there for a reason. All because he's not soft all the time.
But have you ever considered some of us NEED that kinda leadership? Some of us need a commander who will tell us what to do, and give us clear direction. Some of us need to know that our leader won't suddenly up and run. Some of us need that kind of structure.
It's not for everyone, but Titans flourish under a command structure! Lots of us need direct instructions. Those who want a looser chain of command can go to Cayde, and those who want time to wander and discover can go to Ikora. But some of us need clear instructions, and that's not bad, it's just how some of us work.
Stop making it seem like giving clear direct instructions and having clear cut rules that help keep people safe make Zavala a bad guy. It's just the way he leads.
So in conclusion, Zavala is actually a good leader. He's not infallible, but he DOES try to lead in the way he knows best, and keep people safe. He doesn't feel blameless for his mistakes, but tries not to make them again. His leading style isnt for everyone, but that doesn't make him a bad person.
