Bookbinding: Sail Close To The Wind by renwhit

I have finally finished my binding of Sail Close To The Wind by @titanfalling3 (renwhit) and, with it, my Come What May binding! There is more to the series that I highly recommend, but these three first volumes are my favorite parts and the ones I planned to bind.

Sail Close To The Wind needed a slightly different vibe to Head In The Lion's Mouth, so I found a rough handwritten sort of font, thick and a little aggressive to be the title font. It didn't look as good for first letters, so I used it for the full first word of every chapter. This was also my first time playing around with the wingbat stylized line under the chapter headings. I used the one used in the first chapter of the fic (changed to be symmetrical). I plan on doing similar effects in future text formatting.

The biggest typesetting decision to be made was what to do with the blackout poetry chapter. If you've not read the fic, go read it, it has a full length chapter blacked out other than selected words. Digitally, this creates a feeling of wading through the seemingly endless darkness to find a small patch of light. Physically, that would have been TWENTY PAGES of blacked out text, which would just use up toner for little effect. I cut down the blacked out section to four pages, so the blackout poem is still present, and that effect isn't lost.

For the sanding, I actually got a new grit of sandpaper (I even out my page edged with a palm sander / rotary sander), a 40 grit. Which worked amazingly. It was so much easier to get the edges nice, and then I didn't even need to use my 100 grit, just the 200 to get it smooth.

The page edges my BELOVED. Doing the black page edges was something I was impatient for the entire process leading up to it. It's gorgeous. It's weird. It fits the book perfectly.

I actually could not find my black cotton, so I GOT black cotton for this (and a bunch of other cool looking fat quarters from a local quilt shop for future covers). I wanted to create a similar aesthetic to HLM's gold dripping cover. I focused on the idea of stars throughout the book and used the Silveriest Silver to do some drips.

As a bonus, I decided to make an origami crane and a ninja star for the corresponding scene & motif in the book!

I would like to complain (read: compliment) that the ninja star FITS IN WITH THE STAR AND CONSTELLATION MOTIF IN THE BOOK.

oh this is FANTASTIC -- i was curious how the hell the whole blackout chapter could even be feasible in a print copy considering the amount of ink that would require, and your condensed version was def the smartest way to go about it. as ever your reasoning behind every choice is such a treat 😍

I adore him. deeply damaged man. did so many things wrong by which I mean never did anything wrong in his whole life yes even that. whatever you have in mind. he was right.

Bookbinding: Head In The Lion's Mouth by renwhit

Finally done with my biggest bookbinding project yet! One of my all-time favorite fics, Head In The Lion's Mouth by @titanfalling3.

I'm really happy with how this came out. I knew I wanted wine and gold as the color scheme. The wine colored damask was a placemat that I harvested and scraped away a lot of deteriorated batting/filling from the inside. The gold is metallic ink that I mixed 1:1 Brass and Bronze, which ended up with a very nice antique gold look. The Brass on its own looks too yellow, especially on page edges.

The typesetting. I tried out being more creative this time 'round. I put in fancy first letters of each chapter, and effect I like a lot. There are sections of the fic that switch to being right-aligned, so I had to add all of that by hand.

The binding! Despite the thickness of the book, I went with my normal method (Sea Lemon's stitch) rather than attempting a curved spine. Unfortunately, somehow when I set the glue on the spine to dry, the text block was weirdly angled and dried uneven. Which meant I spent twice as long (more actually, but I'll get to that) sanding down the edges to be even.

For doing the edges, I tried out applying the metallic ink with a brush (bad idea #1) and sealing it in with beeswax (bad idea #2). It looked good in the press, but when I cracked the pages, it became an uneven ugly mess. That meant...more sanding! Another half hour of sanding later, I did my normal technique of applying the ink with a piece of cloth (so it's drier than with a brush) and leaving it at that.

The title plate. Originally, I wanted to try using an iron-on sheet, but I couldn't get it to peel. Instead, I used normal paper with a single layer of varnish to give it a hint of water resistance and glued it on.

The splatter really added the verve and spunk the book needed. While Danny has wine red blood that splatters on a gold-toed shoe, this book cover inverts it! The wine red is a little more purple than the photos capture.

Fanbinding: Fairgoers by renwhit

I have been posting my fanbinds out of order; this was my first successful bind. I had done the typeset and printed it a while back (a couple years ago, I think) when I was initially intrigued by bookbinding, and this past week, its time finally arrived.

@titanfalling3 's Come What May series is one of my all-time favorites, and I definitely plan on binding Head In The Lion's Mouth and Sail Close To The Wind too. I have an inkling of wine-colored damask and gilded edges...
