Mirror Magick
The magick and mystery of mirrors. The magic mirror is one of the oldest tools employed in both divination and spell casting. The classic magic mirror is a dark concave surface or reflective material. The earliest manufactured mirrors were pieces of polished stone such as Obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass. Examples of Obsidian mirrors have been dated to around 6000 BC. Personally I have an Obsidian sphere for scrying, one of my favorite tools. Mirrors can be used in all sorts of magick - for confidence, charms, communication, determination, glamour, insight, luck, memories, money, truth and promises. Some people like to keep two mirrors, one for scrying and divination and one for spell work, either way keep your magick mirrors for magical purposes only.
Some see a mirror as a portal into another world or plane of existence, think of Alice falling through the looking glass. There are forms of astral projection done with mirrors, even summoning spirits to the surface of a mirror, even scenarios of spirits entering our realm through mirrors.
There is an old myth that a woman’s future husband would be reviled to her if she combs her hair in the mirror by candle light at midnight and focuses on the answer in the reflection. Magick mirrors have been used in popular folklore for generations, think of The evil queen in snow white, seeking answers through a mirror to confirm her status, beauty, and power.
As a lunar symbol, the mirror is held sacred to the Moon, for as the Moon reflects the Sun’s light, the mirror reflects back all things in their true light. The mirror is a link to the moon and the subconscious, a truly magical instrument. Mermaids (my favorite water spirits) are often seen sitting on the rocks gazing into hand mirrors.
Ways in which a Magick Mirror can be used:
To contact spirit guides
To access knowledge
For healing and self improvement
As a magickal transmitter and receiver
For divining the past, present and future
As a portal to the Astral Plane
For shamanic journeying
For ritual invocation and evocation
To improve visualization skills
and spellcraft
Buying a mirror: You can find polished Obsidian mirrors for scrying online or in some new age stores, but don’t be afraid to use a regular round mirror that you can buy at any store.
After purchasing the mirror, take it home and wash its face carefully with clean water. Consecrate the mirror and make a formal cleansing and dedication, you can wash it with a cleansing infusion of Hyssop if you’d like, one teaspoon to one cup of water. Cool before use. When the mirror has dried, cover it’s face with a black cloth and lay or hang it where it won’t be touched until the full Moon. On that night, expose the mirror to the rays of the full Moon, preferably outside but through a window if necessary, to charge it with lunar energy.
When not in use I keep my mirror covered to prevent any negative energy from entering.
Working with your mirror - Keep the surface of your mirror clean, charge, recharge and bless your mirror regularly. Working on a full or waxing moon is best for mirror magick, especially the mirror being so linked with the energy of the moon.
When doing spellcraft or scrying with your mirror, use only natural light such as candlelight, Moonlight, or soft Sunlight. Place candles where they cannot be seen in the mirror, to the sides and behind it, but still reflect light and shadow onto it’s surface. When scrying tilt the mirror angle so that you do not see your own face reflected, unless you are seeking to discover yourself in your true light. Burn corresponding incense to heighten your psychic awareness whilst you work. Remember when scrying with any thing, don’t focus to hard on the mirrors surface, look through the mirror, it is your mind’s eye that should be doing the ‘seeing’.
WARNING: NEVER USE A MIRROR FOR BLACK MAGIC OR TO REFLECT BACK NEGATIVE ENERGY!! 9 out of 10 times this will back fire and you will only be damning yourself!
Below is a mirror spell you can use for yourself, feel free to change it to better suit your craft
Self Empowerment Mirror Spell
Ingredients- 2 White Chime Candles, Anointing Energy oil (see past blog about oil recipes) Magick Mirror, 1 Turquoise Stone
First thing you want to do is take a purification bath, of your choice, wash away any and all negative energy before entering into this spell. Anoint your candles and the Turquoise with the Energy oil, Consecrate the Turquoise stone and infuse it with white light, energy, strength, and love. Meditate upon your intentions before you begin. The candles should be placed on the sides of the mirror to illuminate your reflection yet not have the flames be reflected in the mirror. Light the candles and hold the stone in your hands. Feel the positive energy emanating from the candles. Focus on your reflection and all of your positive qualities. See yourself in the mirror growing stronger and more beautiful, feel yourself glowing with positive energy and reflect it onto yourself back and forth with your reflection, meditate on this for a while. Chant to yourself 9 times in sets of 3 “I am strong, I am beautiful, I am powerful, I am love” and remember the whole time that the most powerful tool of magick to ever be used is YOU. YOU are the magick.
Call upon whatever deity it is you desire to bless your intentions and thank them for their blessings. I like to carry the Turquoise with me in my pocket during presentations, during confrontations or whenever I need that little extra empowerment. Leave it on your altar and charge it with the empowerment mirror spell when you feel you need to.
Blessed Be!
