DEREK, a financial advisor in the massive Chicago suburb of Shaumburg, has found himself in a rut. He lives alone in a cookie cutter house, the markets are in flux, and his clients are becoming stranger and fewer by the day (i.e. the magnate of a company that produces animal-sound ambiance CDs). Unexpectedly, Derek comes home to finds several of his best friends and roommates from college, whom he hasnât seen in seven years: BRUCE, teeming with misguided confidence and a quick-fix solution to everything; MASON, whose uncanny gullibility always leaves him one step behind, though he thinks heâs two steps ahead; PENNY, a self-proclaimed diva who canât survive without manufactured drama; and GIRL, an esoteric free spirit whose lack of focus occasionally turns into sage-like wisdom. Back in their college days they all lived together and were a rambunctious group of misfits, but now⊠well, much hasnât changed for anyone except Derek. Though he has always been the voice of reason of the group, Derek used to live a more carefree lifestyle. After college, he set down the path of perceived personal and financial security, only to find himself alone and miserable. However, by acting as the patriarch to his new five-member householdâpushing his friends week after week to find jobs, pitch in, and take hold of their livesâDerek gets closer and closer to feeling at comfort with his career, his friendships, and himself. As it turns out, he needs these crazy people.
Structurally and tonally, Itâs Only Temporary is inspired by the âfull-circleâ model of shows like Seinfeld and Arrested Development. Much like these series, IOT utilizes its ensemble cast to create threaded storylines with a theme. Every episode has a point of intersection where all the storylines collide, which not only makes the humor in Act III that much more entertaining, but keeps the viewer engaged and excited to see how itâs all going to come together through the entire episode. Perhaps somewhere in between Seinfeld and Arrested Development, the characters in IOT have unique relationship histories. They were once very close, but have fallen out of touch over the years, which leaves a lot of breathing room for them to discover the ways that they have changed, as well as the things they missed while apart. In a way they are a family, but also relative strangers.

From there, we follow the lucky winner to see what his or her life has in store.

Genesis: For years, I've told family, friends, and basically anyone that will listen that if the big one was coming-- the asteroid, the doomsday device, the world-ender-- that I'd want to to be right at the point of impact. Â Literally, if a big rock came from outer space and threatened to end life on this planet as we know it, I'd like the opportunity to throw a punch at it. Â Go down swinging, as they say.When thinking about how I could work this into a character, I thought to myself, what kind of man would have this mindset (someone more interesting than myself)? Â He'd have to be protective, stubborn, and a bit of an egotist. Â He'd have to have nothing to lose. Â He'd have to fear nothing. Â I ended up putting all these characteristics together, and then I gave him 30 billion dollars. Â This is where Walter "Wally" Strink came from.Â

Logline:Â Â Dave and Nelson, two friends drowning in their stagnant lives, decide to try and shake things up by attending Elsewhere, a four-day, off-the-grid festival in the northern Nevada desert.
Genesis:Â If it's not obvious from the logline (or if you're unfamiliar with the annual event) the setting of this script is inspired by Burning Man, which I have attended the last three years. Â This bizarre festival lends itself to a kind of self-exploration and vulnerability that has yet to be seen in a big screen comedy, so, beyond my personal connection, I felt this would be a great universe to play in.
