SOLEDAD SERRANO SESSIONS 1-2-3-4
Soledad Serrano is shown here working with 12 year old Jack Morrison on a 4 part sparring drill.
The drill required some memory and co-ordination – not easy when you have been training with Miss Serrano for nearly an hour!
You can see Jack starting to fatigue – but nothing can compare to what she makes him do in the next clip!
This free clip is part of a coaching session by Soledad Serrano.
DON’T JUST MOVE WITH NOTHING
The session begins with Mr Trotter explaining the set-up for the drill.
This drill involves squaring the body slightly to invite in a side kick. The lead hand is then used to counter at the same time as the back hand blocks.
This free clip is part of a coaching session focussing on developing an effective counter against the side kick.
I NEED INTENT
Someone trying to hurt you has a distinct advantage…
A martial artist must be able to switch immediately to have the mindset capable of being able to defend him or herself – “I need Intent”.
This free clip is part of a Master Class by Master Mark Hutton.
HWA-RANG TUL
Multi World Champion Mark Trotter performing Hwa-Rang Tul after a coaching session on the Pattern with Miss Niketa Wells.

DOES IT HURT?
“Well yeah, a little bit. Hurts more when it doesn’t break aye!”
World Champion & Expert Coach Mr Brendan Doogan goes on to explain how to hold the arm correctly and adjust the distance for the break. You then see Mr Doogan use his entire body to deliver an elbow strike that easily demolishes the board – effortlessly. This is something he worked on in the class – getting the students to perform exaggerated movements to develop power and follow-through.
Mr Doogan has trained for over 18 years and is an International Instructor, International Umpire, World Champion in Power Breaking, Assistant New Zealand Coach, and a member of the Standards and Discipline and Tournament Advisor Groups in New Zealand.
BREAKING CLASS
An coaching session on breaking for juniors and seniors by former World Champion Brendan Doogan.
In this video Mr Brendan Doogan coaches two classes on breaking.
Firstly see how he teaches junior belts how to break in a way that builds their confidence and ability in a fun way.
Then for the seniors Mr Doogan encourages the students to “go crazy” with the execution of their techniques to build the power required for big breaks. This is done alone, then with bags, then on the boards!
If you are interested in improving your breaking, or an instructor wanting a few new ideas for how to teach it, this video is for you.
Video Highlights
Practice! How to go from “terrible at breaking” to a World Champ.
Side kick break from facing backwards
Stamping through boards to gain confidence and the appreciation of the force required to break
Front elbow, knifehand strike and side kick breaks
Your back leg is where the power comes from
Does it hurt?
“Just Walk Away” AND MUCH MORE
GE-BAEK TUL (1st DAN PATTERNS)
Mark Trotter coaches 2nd dan Kavita Jaduram on getting a smooth landing after the flying side piercing kick in Ge-Baek Tul. Landing should be with the leg bent and showing control and balance before moving into the next movement.

3/3
PO-EUN TUL (1st DAN PATTERNS)
In Po-Eun tul the X-stance front blocks are challenging, and the timing of the feet and hands is important. Mr Trotter explains to double world champion Roisin Giles how delaying the hands until you reach the upward part of the sinewave will ensure you get good speed in the block.
The full video is full of hints and tips to improve this pattern for competition or grading.
2/3
KWANG-GAE TUL (1st DAN PATTERNS)
Mr Mark Trotter coaches double world champion Roisin Giles on Kwang-Gae tul, and in this clip you see one of the exercises he uses to improve the load of the side piercing kick. By getting the knee to come back and hit the hand in an exaggerated motion, the range of motion and kicking power improves.

BANDAE DOLLYO CHAGI
Master Thierry Meyour (7th dan, Finland) teaches the reverse turning kick as a counter attack.
He instructs his students to aim at around the chest height, anticipating the opponent will be leaning slightly as they attack – so that the kick will then score at head level.
See more from Master Thierry Meyour's quick-fire workshop filmed especially for TKDCoaching.com from his Do-jang in Tampere, Finland.
DEVASTATING SIDE KICK
Master Hutton has a beautiful side piercing kick, and he can place it precisely where he wants every time. You will not see him do too many flashy high kicks though as it’s all about reality and effectiveness.
He emphasises how essential the supporting foot is to pivot and push his energy through the target.
SOMETHING JUST FOR INSTRUCTORS
In New Zealand we run courses for blue belts and above of all ages, as an introduction to instructing. The course is called an Instructors Induction Course and it has been run by 5th dan Mr Michael Lowe for many years.
During the course all participants are taught:
The Qualities of an Instructor
How to run a class
Moral and ethical qualities of an instructor
How to conduct a warm-up and fun games
How to bring movements to life with realistic scenarios
and much more
Check out the free videos from the course here
CORE, CORE & MORE CORE
Master Hutton demonstrates how to involve the whole body to generate power in a front snap kick. His message of Core, Core and More Core is emphasised again as he does throughout the seminar.
Master Huttons reminds the students not to use this kick unless you are “devastating at it” as it is for close distance situations.

Train your side kick to be effective in self-defence
Arc-hand thrust using your body as a devastating follow up
Penetrating punches
Reverse-knifehand strikes to the legs
Fit for purpose leg exercises
Using the core with kicking
Super fast open-fist punches and knifehand strikes
Senior pattern movements and how they should be performed
POWER BREAKING & THE THEORY OF POWER
Power breaking World Champion Mr Brendan Doogan explains the five competition power breaks as they relate to the Theory of Power.
The ITF power breaking events comprise five techniques:
Forefist punch
Knifehand strike
Side piercing kick
Turning kick
Reverse turning kick
Mr Doogan demonstrates each of the techniques and explains how knowing about the “Theory of Power” can help execute these techniques well. The Theory of Power is a list of six factors General Choi Hong Hi prescribes as the essential elements to gaining power in your techniques. These are:
Reaction Force
Concentration
Equilibrium
Breath Control
Mass
Speed
In this 5 minute clip Mr Doogan picks a couple of key points relating to these factors and shows you how to put them into practice.

THE ILLUSION OF RANGE
Mr van Roon spends a good amount of time in the session talking about range, and the illusion of range – or positioning yourself so that you are able to entice your opponent to do what you want them to do. Your positioning and stance must be perfect so that you can move just out of range and then counter.
