Weird porn author who was dragged into Hugo Awards mess pulls off epic troll

For the second year in a row, a bunch of disgruntled “conservative” sf readers and writers are attempting to destroy science fiction’s Hugo Awards by nominating slates of works that are, variously: rabid racist tracts; works by their ideological opponents; tepid military sf; works by bystanders; and weird porn by Chuck Tingle, a master of the form, who has nothing to do with any of this.

Until now. When Tingle – who publishes “bizarre niche erotica” in great volume – discovered that his book Space Raptor Butt Invasion had been promoted to the Hugo ballot by spoilers hoping to discredit the award, he sprang into action. He created a new title, especially aimed at the “Puppies” (the two groups who want to kill the Hugos call themselves “Rabid Puppies” and “Sad Puppies” for fantastically tedious reasons you can look up for yourself if you care to): “Slammed In The Butt By My Hugo Award Nomination.”

Then Tingle took to Twitter, writing an amazing series of GIF-illustrated tweets, mocking Vox Day, avowed white supremacist and leader of the “Rabid Puppies.”

The crowning glory of Tingle’s campaign, though, was hisannouncement that his Hugo Award, should he win it, would be accepted by Zoe Quinn, the reigning bogeywoman of the Gamergate/neoreactionary right. In other words: every time a “Puppy” casts a vote for Tingle’s work, they cast a vote for giving Zoe Quinn a podium from which to address the entire World Science Fiction Convention about the importance of diversity and representation in fiction.

It is truly glorious.

if prince was “addicted” to opiates, it was because he was in great pain from a chronic hip injury, as he had been for many, many years. if he was about to see an “addiction doctor,” it was more than likely a nasty, judgmental gatekeeping process by his medical professionals to force his participation as a “good patient” (a fallacy - there is no wrong way to be sick) and ensure he felt appropriately shamed by his need for relief.

please reconsider how you talk about sick people who need medication, and reconsider how you think about the medication they need.

Why is Congress so clueless about tech? Because they fired all their experts 20 years ago

It’s been 21 years since the Republican Congress zeroed out the $20M budget of the Office of Technology Assessment, a casualty of Newt Gingrich’s “Contract With America” that deprived Congress of its principle source of technological expertise.

Even if you accept Gingrich’s view that the US Government needed to be radically shrunk, it’s hard to imagine a stupider decision than jettisoning technology experts on the eve of the 21st century, especially when those experts cost the country less than a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the Congressional budget.

Whenever there’s a debate about climate change, Internet censorship, encryption, or other highly technical subjects, we routinely hear Members of Congress say things like, “I’m no scientist, but…” Whenever you hear that, you should substitute, “I fired all the scientists, so…”

The fact that Congress is flying blind, technologically speaking, explains an awful lot, from climate change denial to the crypto wars to SOPA and the Office of Personnel Management breach.

The OTA was once a jewel in America’s crown, widely studied and duplicated by other governments around the world. The problem was that the OTA was reality-based and reality has a well-known liberal bias. So when Reagan proposed his Star Wars missile shield, the OTA stubbornly refused to say it would work, because it wouldn’t.

This is the structural barrier to rebooting the OTA today. The absence of independent technical experts in Congress gives Reps and Senators cover when they introduce bad policy (which may be good for their campaign funders). They can bring in their own “experts” who’ll testify against renewable energy or vaccination or whatever, and accuse the other side’s experts of “partisanship.”

This is good for both parties, because it lets lawmakers serve their paymasters. But it’s terrible – possibly fatal – for America.
