Allow me to reintroduce myself

My name is Sonido Reyes (please clap)

A few things to note:

1. Sonora is not a dead name FOR ME SPECIFICALLY. Not every trans person is the same, but I have a fond relationship with my old name. It just doesn't suit me anymore, and that's okay. Call me Sonido going forward, but there's no need to avoid mentioning my old name when it's relevant. If you want to read more about my thoughts on this, I'll have a newsletter coming tomorrow that goes more in depth

2. Please do not boycott my old books for having my old name on them! Think of them as limited-edition, pre-pokemon evolution copies of Sonido Reyes books lol. I WANT those books to sell! In fact, if they sell enough copies to justify another printing, then I'll get to see my new name on them even sooner!

3. Changing my name is something I needed to do, but it is frankly terrifying, especially right now. Maybe putting more attention on myself while there's already a target on my back is naive. I have amazing friends and followers, and while I'm sure there will be a lot of people who support me, I'm still anxious about how this will be received. Please, please, be nice to me about it, or at least keep your judgment somewhere I can't see

4. I'm in the process of changing my name on all socials, my website, and all the places I could think of that link to my socials or website, but if you happen to come across something of mine in the wild* that I still haven't updated, please let me know!

*this doesn't apply to retail sites or anything connected to my books, since the name on the books will take longer to change

If you are looking at this page, I assume you’re likely reading The Luis Ortega Survival Club and I wanted to recommend another book I read recently! If I Told You The Truth by Jasmin Kaur is another beautiful YA book that handles sexual assault and intersectionality. It is a novel in verse that bounces between the perspective of Kiran, a survivor who is pregnant and decides to overstay her visa in Canada to raise her daughter away from her assailant, and her daughter Sahaara in the future, when Kiran’s assailant is running for political office. It’s really heavy (obviously) but gorgeous and has a lot of similarity to TLOSC, though told with a different style, timescale, and perspective.
