Day 11: JOMPBPC: Diversity

So, I finished the The Golden Boy’s Guide To Bipolar today, and omg, the way that the author sets up this rich world and makes it feel so alive is incredible. Back when I read The Lesbiana’s Guide To Catholic School, I was also so incredibly invested in the side characters (especially Caesar so I’m so glad we got this book about him), and even in this book which is already a spinoff about a side character, all of the side characters still feel so alive and real and I am so incredibly invested in all of their stories. Like I’m so serious when I say that I would read a spinoff of the this spinoff. I would read spinoffs of spinoffs of spinoffs please I beg. (Spoilers ahead btw)
Here is a list of characters that I am on my hands and knees for a spinoff for
Abuela and Dona Violeta (idk how to do the correct n on my phone keyboard sorry), but omg these two acting as a dark mirror to Caesar and Jamal the whole time and showing what could become of them if Caesar makes the same decision as his Abuela. But also, they show how it’s never too late and even in their old age, there is still time to fix things. (Hey, I saw the tv glow core there is still time!!!) I was absolutely clocking them before it was confirmed, especially with Moni trying to set her up and failing miserably. Like, we all know why.
I need an Avery spinoff I fear. Like I got sooo invested in his subplot. He’s not a bad person, he was taken advantage of, but at the same time, he always did have a choice, but he was too afraid to face the consequences of what would happen if he did choose to spare Caesar. But at the same time, you can’t really blame him because the consequences in question literally got him sent to conversion therapy that was so horrific and traumatic that he ended up with PTSD and is the the SMI support group. And then even once he’d already been sent there, all of his efforts to not end up their backfired because now Nick had even more to hang over his head. But despite everything, in the end he chose to get help for Caesar and testify against Nick and I was so proud of him because he was genuinely making an effort to be better, and him and Caesar are even getting along. And I thought that his friendship with Hunter was really funny because Hunter was completely oblivious to his beef with Caesar, but then it took me by such complete surprise that Hunter had a crush on him at the end, and like actually that’s so cute and I want the best for them, and obviously that would be really difficult for Avery to navigate after everything, but I really hope that he can do it because they would be so cute please Avery and Hunter spinoff I beg. Especially with Hunter now figuring out his sexuality as well. Token cishet no more lol.
Also even the characters in the SMI support group, I would read spinoffs about all of them I’m so serious. Caesar was like blah blah blah I don’t care about these guys problems and I’m not gonna pay attention. Like boi, you better pay attention because I’m so invested! Zo, Nia, and Aaron all felt so fleshed out even though they weren’t the most relevant. Like Aaron’s girlfriend dumping him bc of his BPD was so upsetting and it’s just this quick mention too, like give me more lore, what happened?! It doesn’t even sound like he did anything to upset her other than tell her uuuughhhh. I’m glad that Zo and their boyfriend had a happy ending with their arc though. (I would even read a spinoff of Zo’s unnamed boyfriend I’m so serious I’m desperate for crumbs), and I love Nia always sneaking out, but also come on, you’re cool go hang out with everyone. Also, I love how Caesar is so annoyed about going to support groups bc they get this rep of being all serious and sappy and whatnot, but they’re actually so fun and chill (from my experience at my Tourette support group anyway, we just hang out, eat snacks, and play games, and it feels nice to know that you’re surrounded by people who deal with similar problems to you.)
Also as much as Bianca is kind of the worst, I would read a spinoff about her. Because like why is she like this?! There has to be a reason, right? Because they’re always talking about how badly she needs everyone to like her, but instead she just keeps making people hate her. Like that’s got to come from somewhere, right?
Also I would love to know more about Jamal. Like he’s been through so much but since we’re seeing this out of originally Yami’s perspective and then Caesar’s who’s is super clouded by their own issues, I feel like we don’t get the full scope of what’s going on in his life. Also I’m not sure if it’s just me but he feels a bit autistic coded whether that’s intentional or not with his very repetitive ways of asking questions, talking at length about random facts, being hard to read, always wearing nice clothes (maybe suits it was) or something I think if I’m remembering that correctly, and I believe he’s described as having a bit of a flat affect, or at least that was how I interpreted some of his descriptors. So, that could be interesting delve into if that was the intent.
I would also love to know more about the specifics of Mami’s relationship with Abuela. She harbors a lot of resentment for things that Abuela did during her childhood, but we don’t get a lot of specifics. I’d imagine it was a pretty unhappy household though considering how Abuela was forcing herself into a marriage that she didn’t want and also in a bad place with her mentally illness. But still, I want specifics. What went down?! Also, how did Yami and Caesar’s father play into this. Like what did he think of their family, and how Mami meet him. Also, do any of these characters have actual canon names that aren’t their familial role?
Moni is an absolute icon and I love her so much she’s so amazing you have no idea and I would read an entire book about her… business endeavors. She cracks me up so bad.
Honestly, I would even read a Nick spinoff even though he has the vibes of just terrible because he was raised privileged and never faced any consequences for his actions. But still I’m so curious how he sees the world as well.
Anyway, about the actual main stuff from this book, I’m not bipolar so I can’t relate to specific things, but a lot of stuff he says about the mentally ill queer experience in general did really resonate with me. Specifically as someone with OCD who used to have a really bad religious obsession, a lot of his fear of hell and the drastic measures that he takes to try to avoid it really resonated. Like I used to imagine forcing myself to marry a Christian man so I could convert to Christianity and be saved and also be heterosexual at my worst point. That was hell. Mostly I just said I’d be celebate but uuuugh thinking about it. Also I really appreciated him connecting to some of the other kids in SMI group, the mentally ill or neurodivergent solidarity really resonated, I feel that with who I befriend.
Also I felt him so hard in the being afraid of your meds thing. I have no idea what taking meds for bipolar is like but I was indeed terrified of my lexapro turning me into a different person and making me compliant and all that so yippee.
While again I can’t speak on the bipolar experience, I think that Caesar was just written so well. He’s not perfect and he messes up, but he’s never shown to be bad either. He’s doing his best and it’s enough that he’s alive.
AND IM ALSO SOOO HAPPY WE GOT THIS SPINOFF HE WAS LIKE MY FAV IN THE LESBIANAS GUIDE TO CATHOLIC SCHOOL I LOVE HIM SO MUUUUCH
one of my favorite fiction novels exploring queer identity and faith is The Golden Boy's Guide to Bipolar by Sonora Reyes. what i adore about this novel is that it doesn't seek resolution through a break from faith. Cesar, our MC, still maintains his relationship with Christ and Catholicism as he comes to terms with both his queer identity and his mental illness. and i've seen a disheartening amount of people read this book and say the ending disappointed them, because he "gives into systemic oppression." and i feel compelled to ask how exactly it is "giving into oppression" to embrace a Christ that has shown you love and compassion? how is it giving into oppression to say that you are queer proudly while still embracing the faith that so many people would try to bar you from? i think to be proudly queer and Catholic is a bit radical, i think it is beautiful, and i find it to be the antithesis of succumbing to oppressive forces.
