300 word statement

The conflict explored between binaries creates depth in art and design as two opposing forces are explored and experimented with. My poster design largely explores the relationship between the defined and the unknown, a rather politically driven binary being explored in our society today. By playing with contrast, contrasting colours, contrasting figures, contrasting forms and contrasting values I have been able to create a piece showing the benefit of allowing space for both the old and the new, for the known and the unknown.

The defined black and white portrait in the background, is representative of an older way of thinking, that for something to be beautiful it must adhere to conventional ideas of beauty and aesthetics.

The benefit and need for these conflicts and experimentation is further highlighted through the figures both fighting their way out of the grey frame which they are being refined to, and as such as spilling their way out of the picture fighting off the constraints of their binaries to create a new middle ground.

Going back to an idea I had with my first draft, having a kind of overlay on top of the poster to show the amount of varying collaborators go into the work. I have chosen website links of all the content I researched, directly used & referenced in my octopus figure.

Begun playing around with the idea of the Octopus as a living collaborator adding to the image but also holding back elements of it.

I have been thinking about the concept of collaboration as a living thing, as it constantly changes and reacts to its surrounds and influences.

In contrast to the main belief that collaboration strengthens and enlightens, there are those afraid that collaboration results in loss of intellectual property and their own identity.

To mesh these ideas together I have thought about creating a collage with a creature like an octopus or a python.

For my second draft I decided to do a very basic, simple and visually appealing collage. This kind of work takes both images from another artist and is heavily inspired my collagists Annegret Soltau, John Stezaker, Kelly Maker & Dina Broadhurst.

I like the way the female figure is almost resisting the collaboration as it speaks to my second ideal about the problems associated with collaboration and how many in art & design see it as appropriation.

How does collaboration create communities in art and design? What challenges do collaborative approaches face and what are some of the solutions?

When first brainstorming about my question I was initially struck by the idea of a collage to best represent the impact collaboration and influence can have on an artist/designer and their creations. I was drawn to this form as it not only is visually appealing for a piece of graphic design like a poster, but also is a physical embodiment of collaboration, as many collage artists use imagery that is not their own and their styles are influenced by others.

I think i’d like to explore a little how all work in art and design is in form a collaboration of all your inspirations.

how - collaboration allows artists who admire each others work, or are inspired by each other to create pieces that push their creative abilities

what - plagiarism. proper acknowledgement. this idea of where does the original idea come from?? If i like an fellow designers work with clouds and I incorporate similar imagery into my work, is this inspiration or plagiarism?
