An Important Message
This is the first time I’ve ever done something like this. While I usually don’t post my opinion about certain things, including politics. I figured that with the state of things right now that I would try to do my best to bring to you all a message that is so desperately needed.
I should also add that these are my individual views to this election and that I am being honest about how I feel right now.
So without further ado, here we go:
I’m sure that when we all watched the results last night and woke up this morning, we did not expect for things to turn out the way they did. And yet here we are. 18 months ago when he made his announcement that he was running for president of the United States, everyone thought it was a joke, including myself. But as time passed, from the primaries to now, we were all surprised to see that he came so far, and now he is the President-elect.
If there is one thing that I have understood watching this election It’s this, there are people who are upset about the direction this country is going. They are unhappy with the way things are and want a change. I’ve noticed that it’s not just this election, but every election we get this. That’s not to say I’m not aware of how things have been these past few years, but here’s how this election is different. Not only does is have an effect on us here in the U.S., but it is going to effect the whole world. To think that this person, if you can call him that, is going to be the one that represents our country, our values, our beliefs. Hell we’re trusting this guy to uphold the constitution. But as we’ve seen from his campaign, he has time and time again insulted and disrespect women, Muslims, African-Americans, the LGBTQ community, Latinos, hell, he even had the nerve to talk down the parents of a fallen soldier. And yet no matter how much came out about him in terms of his character and his lifestyle, he still manages to become President!!!
And now here we are, in less than two months we are going to inaugurate this person. And while looks as if we are at the end of it all, I’ve tried to remind myself of the progress that we have made. Yes, like most of you I watched the results in horror wondering what would happen. After a while I went to sleep, and when I woke up, I was upset, frustrated, mad as hell about the outcome. While Hilary managed to win the popular vote, it was clear from the number of the electoral college votes where they wanted things to go. I could go on about all the many factors about how we got to this point, but that would mean that I would have to write another blog post, which honestly, as I write this I am trying very hard to contain my emotions and use of language.
Another thing that I do want to point out is this, yes I am African-American, but I am also a Christian, and the fact that the Religious Right had the nerve to even support him makes me sick to my stomach. The fact that he even tried to use scripture to show that he’s with them was just an insult to Christianity. But here’s another thing I want to say, while I am aware that not all Christians (including myself) fell for the jive that this guy had the nerve to speak, I say this to those Christians who voted for him: Did you really think about the decision you made yesterday? When you studied your bible and read the words that Our Lord and Savior said to us his people many years ago, where you really thinking about those who may not be like you, those we are supposed to reach out to and spread the love of Christ that you so proclaim you have? Or were you thinking more about yourself and those like you, about this fear that you have about this country becoming something that makes you uncomfortable. Did you really think about the fact that you elected someone who in every way, shape and form defies everything Christianity is about? I think we all got our answer last night.
Here is my main point, while we have reached this point in American history where it looks like our country is about to become divided, where we have now elected someone who obviously wants to do everything possible to divide this country. The way I see it, the only way we can truly make it through is love, the same love that Christ has talked about over and over again. Here’s the thing, this country has gone through a lot during its 240-year history. From revolution, slavery, the Great Depression, equal rights for African-Americans, women, the LGBTQ community, immigrants and so many other things. If we can make it through all of that, then I truly believe that we can survive the next four years. Yes, it will not be easy, it will be a difficult time and a true test to everything we have overcome, but as long as we remember what America really is, then we are going to make it.
I also want to say that as a believer of Christ I have no ill will against anyone that isn’t like me. If anything I want to say that I love and respect everyone, whether White, Black, Latino, Asian, male, female, non-gender specific, straight, gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, pan-sexual, transgender, queer, disabled, Christian, Muslim, or Jewish. The point is that every day I strive to be more like Christ and the best way to do that is show love regardless. Also, who am I to judge anyone that isn’t like me, besides if anything I’m pretty messed up (and in some way shape or form we all are). Yes, I have flaws, issues, struggles, and many other problems that I deal with every single day. It’s just a shame that other Christians can’t do the same but instead choose to judge others unlike themselves, not even bothering to turn the mirror back on themselves. And once again keeping it 100%, but that’s bullshit. Last time I checked who are we to judge others when at the end of the day it is God who will make the final judgement for who we really are, and based on what I’ve seen it’s not looking good.
The message I want to send is this, I pray that all of us Americans regardless of who we are can use this outcome as a reminder to love. To respect others with kindness and to show that through not just words but actions. I say this as I am right now in the middle of pursuing my career in Theatre, and based on what I’ve seen the community that I’ve experienced in the Theatre world is unlike any other. It’s not always perfect, but it’s still the greatest group of people that I’m proud to be a part of. My prayer is that if we can spread that throughout the rest of the country, we might just finally be heading in the right direction.
I’d also like to add that I am glad this election is over. These past 18 months for me have been nothing but unnecessary stress, heightened anxiety, and trouble sleeping. But with it now all behind us, I hope that we can finally move forward, and that we do our best to live out the lives that we have been blessed. Regardless, we still live in the United States, which I still believe is the greatest country on earth. The fact we even get an opportunity to vote is something that shouldn’t be taken for granted, and I proud to say that I’m glad I got to be a part of it. While I understand why people are wanting to leave, for me I’m willing to stay here until my time is up. For as long as the good Lord allows me, I am going to continue showing love, and to do His will through the talents that he has blessed me with. But more importantly, while there are certain groups of people who voted for him, that doesn’t mean that everyone in the U.S. is like that. If anything we must remember that in this continuing fight, we are always going to have people of kind hearts to come along and show us otherwise. This I believe is something that won’t stop happening anytime soon.
As I finally come to a close, I understand that emotions are still high after the results came out. However, there’s a song from one of my favorite artists that I want to share with you all. While it was released 40 years ago, the lyrics hold some major weight and are as relevant now as they were when released. If you have a chance take some time to listen and meditate on what it has to say.
With that being said, I want to say again that I love you all and may we spread the love not just for the next four years, but forever. God bless you, may God continue to bless the United States of America and also the entire world as we find the comfort and peace that we need to get through this Presidency.
P.S., here’s a picture of some cute kittens, trust me, we all need this.
Want to wish a happy birthday to one of my closest friends. At times he can annoy me, but we've shared many a great memories together and glad that we have been apart of each others lives. Happy birthday Thaddeus!!!
