T.B. LaBerge, Unwritten Letters to You
Hey,
Havent written anything to myself since forever. Probably more than a year?
It's 3 days after my birthday, 1 day after I returned from Bali.
What prompted me to note down my thoughts again, you may ask.
Well, he wrote me a letter for my birthday. It's been almost 3 years. I'm happy, but today, i feel sad as well.
Perhaps it's because after reading his letter, I'm once again unsure of how long things will last. I wonder if we are walking further and further away from one another. I wonder if one day we won't be able to meet in the middle anymore.
I think about my work often now. It's probably the main thing on my mind these days. Work, him, and misc.
I complain a lot, but I do nothing to change my situation, it's my fault and I know that. I have a horrible fallacy of avoiding things that scare me. I run and run, until I can't anymore. And then I make do with the situation and choose the easy way out. I hate myself for it, yet the more I think, the more I hate myself.
So I write it down.
If only writing things down would lighten my burden. If only my worries and my hatred could be left in these letters, and leave me 21 grams lighter.
I'm already 24, yet little has changed.
Hey, I want you to know that you have to change your situation, because no one else will change it for you.
3 October 2017 | Tuesday I found a job. Just signed the contract last week, and I'm starting on the 16th this month. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'm happy that I found a job in something that I like, and quite glad that I didn't end up in some manufacturing firm working some back end roles. However, I'm also a little scared of the upcoming challenge. I don't integrate well enough outside my comfort zone, and it tires me out quickly. I'm not sure if I'm really suitable in doing this. On the other hand, I am quite excited to learn new things and finally do something with my life. The pay isn't exactly good though. Maybe it will increase; I hope it will increase. Also, this was an extremely painful ordeal to go through. I certainly feel less stressed now compared to a few months ago, but at the same time, I'm not sure if that means I'm actually not depressed? Of course I hop I'm not, but deep down I know that there's a part of me that's really messed up, waiting for a day where the world is too much to bear and I crumble. Honestly I feel like I do understand yet don't understand myself. Until then xx
20 September 2017 | Wednesday Haven't blogged in a while. When was my last post? July? August? Either way, I failed myself. I am still the same old unemployed graduate with a useless degree and a fleeting heart. I am still confused over what I want in life, still anxious and angry over the same problems. There really isn't much I can expand on. Rather, Teresa told me about her depression a few weeks ago, and how her family handled it, or the lack of. Anyhow, it made me open up to her as well. The fact that I had suicidal thoughts and wanted anything for my heart to stop hurting. It wasn't something easy to say. There are more and more people who are accepting of depression. But that's not the point. The point is, I don't want any one of my friends or family to see me in a different light. To look at me and think, oh she's so bubbly and bimbo on the outside, but really she's just weak and sensitive. What can she be depressed about? She has a good family. She has a boyfriend. She has a degree from a good school. Yes, she's unemployed now, but she will definitely find a job soon. What can be so wrong about her life? Everything is wrong. Maybe I am more sensitive, I am weaker than others. Maybe that's why I break down so frequently. I am sick of putting up a friendly, sociable front every single time I go for interviews. No guys, I don't want your job because I'm passionate about supporting people from the back. I want it because I need money. I need to move on. I need to be like everyone else. Of course I want to tell the whole wide world how sad I am. How inexplicably unfair this entire universe is. That 'Hey guys, just give me a chance, I will be able to do it!'. But honey, no one will give you any chance. You are just one little ant in the entire colony. There will always be someone who are smarter, prettier, more sociable, more everything than you. Sometimes, I just want to slice open my arms. To look at the thick red fluid oozing out of me. This life inside of me, its wasted. I don't deserve it. Sometimes, I think about how easy it would be to just open my window and jump down. To end this misery. To show the world how unhappy I actually am. And if anyone wants to know my eulogy, it'll be like this: You must think I am selfish. I admit, that I've always been a selfish person. I left because I couldn't be positive, because I couldn't take the stress. I left despite all your encouragements and help, because I didn't want to let anyone down. Perhaps I did this to punish all of you, to make you regret not paying a bit more attention on me. But you have to know this. A large part of this was for me. It was my fault, so I needed to end it. Sometimes, just like now.
Sunday | 20 August 2017 Haven't written anything in a while. Went to have kbbq dinner with my JS mates as a farewell for JJ before she leaves. It was nice meeting up with everyone, but I can't help feeling useless and upset with myself after speaking to them. Almost everyone's found a job. Albeit their jobs were all in manufacturing, at least someone wanted them. To make things worse, they were surprised that I haven't found a job yet because they expected me to be the first to find one. Expectations, something that I cannot deal with. I really hated myself so much at that moment. What can I offer to the world, what am I good at, what can I do? I am lost. I wonder what it is about me that employers doesnt want. I wanted the JETRO position, only to realize that Fran took it. I thought Yamazaki Mazak liked me, but they chose Liqi in the end. Even though I didn't exactly want the job, it would still feel better that someone wants me. So yeah, employment is going downhill, and so is my relationship. I mean it looks fine, and he's coming over to meet my family this weekend, but really, sometimes I wonder if all this is not just a facade. I know that he doesn't want the same thing as me; that he can't give me what I want. My friends have been convincing me not to keep lowering my bottom line for him. I know that too. I know what I should do, and I really, really cannot do it. So while we are not fighting now, I am living everyday in self doubt, hating myself for being so weak and reliant on another human. I'm pretty sure I am now the poster child that people talk about failed relationships to their friends with behind my back. I dont blame them, I asked for it. I don't blame him too. Its all me. Everything. There was a period of time where I thought, hey, things are working well, I am happy! That was prob the few months before exchange, where I just got together with him. That was also prob the sem after he came back from exchange, where we studied in school together as a couple for the first time. But everything was a house of cards. Look at me now. Anna says I need to continue improving myself, help myself be better. Take outside courses, continue to study. Of course, I want that too. Its just that besides Japanese, I really don't know where to start. I think this is the most frightening. Not knowing. I can't see the road anymore. When I was young, I told my grandma that I would grow up, get a job and become rich enough to buy her a rich house. I guess that's my problem. I dream too much.

13 June 2017 | Tuesday Happy birthday, to me (soon). At what age did I stop caring about my birthday? Hm, perhaps this year the most. Mum came in to talk to me while I was bathing, asked me if I had any plans tomorrow. I said no. I think she felt sorry for me. Sorry that I will be spending an entire day alone at home on my birthday. I feel a little sad too, but lately, I don't think I deserve any goodwill from anyone at all. Lately, I don't think I'm worth it anymore.
5 June 2017 | Monday Dear Ren Jie, Guess what, we're together for 2 years! What a feat, no? I can't believe 2 years passed by so fast. It felt like yesterday I was still applying for sep with you and wondering whether it would be awkward for us to go Japan together platonically lol. I'm glad it all turned out well. I don't think I've ever told you this, but I've never really understood why I loved you until recently. I know I say those three words to you every single day for as long as I can remember we got together, but it didn't make sense to me why because we're so different - from very simple things like our favorite songs to the values we believe in. And we used to fight a lot over our differences. But during the grad trip, I realized I shouldn't take for granted all the little things you do for me. Like helping me carry my luggage up the stairs, staying beside me as I climb that fucking dangerous mountain (and also carrying my bag up), paying for things first because I'm too lazy to take out my wallet, sharing your more expensive meals with me, helping me carry my water bottle, going to the beach in Nice with me, exchanging luggage with me when mine died, and many many more i'm sure. I mean I always knew you were nice; we started talking in school because you were too nice and helped me plan my timetable remember. And when we went out this one time you were going to offer to help give this uncle some money cos he had none to take bus home, even though I was mostly convinced that it was all a hoax. And when we were eating steamboat this other time, you bought tissue from this aunty even though I have tissue with me all the time. Its probably nothing much to you, but we live in this society where it's rare to see people offering to do anything nice for another person without asking for anything in return. I know I wouldn't have done it. So yeah, I've always known that you're a really nice person, but I've never thought much about it until the grad trip, partly because I see BK and Fiona together, and I realized there is actually no obligations for BK or any other person to behave the way you do (or maybe Fiona is more independent idk). And so as I lied down on my bed after we came back to Singapore, still getting used to not sleeping next to you, I came to this realization that this is why I love you - because you're a genuinely nice person, to me, and to everyone else. Very cliche, I know. But its true! Hope this doesn't stroke your ego too much haha, but i love you, like really really love you, if you get what I mean. I'm sorry if I've been feeling down recently. There's a lot on my mind and you know how I tend to overthink things. I also know you're busy and tired from work, but I hope you understand. Anyway, I hope the Europe trip has been fun for you too, especially since the only reason you went was becaue I wanted you to. Maybe you don't really like the company, but thanks for going either way. That never ceased to make me guilty, but I loved every second of it, even the bland carbonara, so I want you to remember it too. And that's why I made this little scrapbook of our time in Europe so you'll never forget it (: Happy anniversary, my love. I hope there'll be many more to come.
5 June 2017 | Monday Today (Sunday) was okay. I felt better after talking to kq. Ironic, I know. I always complain about her, but she's one of the few people who gets me. And i get her, most of the time. She had asked me to describe her as honestly as possible. And i said she's really negative and impulsive but she's independent. I meant it. And she insisted on describing me. She settled on saying that I have a happy family and I should be more confident about myself because I'm not as shitty as I think I am. She probably said more, but that really struck me. That someone told me I am okay. That I am not standing at the bottom of a pit. That I have hope. It gave me hope, too. Whatever made her say that, I am thankful. It made me feel better about myself. Perhaps I'll be okay too.
4 June 2017 | Saturday Went out in the afternoon with rj, and had dinner with kq. But still, after I left for home, my heart felt empty again. Like nothing exists inside anymore. The weight of finding a job falls, once again, on my shoulders, each time heavier than the last. I'm not sure how long I can continue before i break. In fact, I would rather prefer to break now. Into millions of tiny little pieces so that I can stop thinking. stop worrying. stop breathing. Its an endless cycle of hate. I hate myself for being this soft, dependent, indecisive, scared young woman. I tell myself, "why are you afraid of failure. Failure does not define you. Its okay to fail", and yet everytime I go to the job portal and see the listings, I automatically categorize myself in the failure corner. I think, "who is going to hire me? I have nothing to offer." And then I get mad at myself. I wonder why I exist in this world. What is my purpose? I started uni without a purpose. Four years ago, I told myself that I would find one in this new institution. I would become a better person, be more outgoing and daring. Four years later, I'm stil the same. Nothing has changed, but my age. I am so afraid. Rj says its okay to start off with an internship. I know. I know that too. But my parents expect me to score a full time job. A stable one. It would hurt me to disappoint them. They spent a lot of time and money on me. In the end, I was rebellious and did not listen to them, and I end up like this. I don't know why, but I feel extra sad today. Not just because I hate myself for being useless, but also because my failures and insecurities would let my parents, my friends, and rj down. I just want to breathe again.
2 June 2017 | Friday External drive stopped working today. Still felt like shit. The only good thing is the Manner biscuits i bought from Austria, which tasted really nice so that's a plus.
1 June 2017 | Thursday Touched down in Singapore at 2.05pm yesterday. That ended my 2 weeks (14-30 May) long grad trip in Europe. Was it a long trip? I suppose so, because I felt terrily empty when I reached home. It was a good thing my mum took leave to fetch me, because I would feel even emptier if I arrived to an empty home. Anyway, this hollowness that has grown within me since March started swelling again. Perhaps because of my looming fate and the anxiety of finding not only a job, but one that pays and I can bare. Not easy, especially with my resume. I guess the grad trip hasn't changed me at all, only gave me space to breathe and push my troubles to the side. So yesterday night, once again, I find myself crying to sleep. I was sad, alone, scared and empty. Being alone does this to you. It makes you think about all your insecurities and turn you into a huge, ugly monster which you're not. You're not. For the past two weeks, I've been sleeping beside RJ. It felt good. I loved sharing a bed with someone, with him. Although he always slept later than me because he was using his phone (while I waited for him to sleep so that we can cuddle but gave in to sleep eventually), he would hug me and kiss me before he slept. That woke me up, and well, a sleepy me is not a happy me. I would be angry and grumble and push him away. But now, I miss this. I miss those moments, no matter how annoying they are to me. Its funny, because he's in sg, with me, and yet I feel so far away from him. Am I too attached? Of course, I missed my own bed. But at the same time, it felt different waking up to an empty house. Without my friends in the living room eating breakfast, or in th ekitchen washing up. It felt different waking up alone with no warm body to cuddle and kiss. It felt, different. I feel all alone. All alone in facing this world. All alone in fighting my battles. I feel like I can't do it. The trip itself was not without ups and downs. We went to Paris, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Pula, Venice, and Nice. I expected the Woody Allen vibe in Paris, but was greeted with disappointment. People smoke too much, really too much. The Eiffel tower did not elicit the kind of feeling I was hoping to have. I did not feel any swell of romantic yearnings. Nothing. It was just there. This manmade tower. Of course, the streets are interesting for me. As my first time stepping foot in Europe, I was surprised to see restaurant seats facing the streets, and pets being allowed to most establishments. It was eye opening. My favourite place was Obertraun, the location of our accomodation, which was opposite Hallstatt. It was a small, quaint town with green grass, colorful flowers, quaint Austrain houses couples with snowy mountains and blue skies. The perfect Windows wallpaper. I could not believe such a place really existed. Like people live in these places?! I loved it so much. Although bk told me that those flowers are mostly weeds, I loved them. It was quiet, healing, and just plain beautiful. I'm not sure how else I can stress it. We also saw horses, sheeps, chickens, ducks, swans, and cats around. It was the first time I got so close to a swan, and I swear, they are scary. They look graceful, yes, but the sound they make? Not pleasant. Anyway, I was sad to leave. We went back to Salzburg, which was one of the top four cities in Austria. Pretty, but not as pretty as Hallstatt, of course. It was also the city which we travelled to Werfen and climbed the mountain which I almost died from. Anyway, back at Salzburg, I split from the group for a few hours to go shopping at C&A for my sister. We walked to Mozart's square after that to sit for a while, before realizing that everywhere else is closed at 6. The sky still bright, we slowly made our way along the riverbanks. It was tiring, hot and we fought along the way because of toilets?, but looking back, it was relaxing to just walk around aimlessly with him. So that day, we didn't book an accomodation but camped at the train and bus station till late to catch the 3am bus to Pula. Pula was, disappointing compared to Austria. We reached there around 12pm, close to 1. After having lunch, we walked around the city. Mainly the arena. And then there was nothing left to do. It was definitely a good idea suggested by rj beforehand to go Venice. So the next day, the four of us (rj, ys, joie and me), woke at 4am, took a bus to Rovinj, and from there, took the Venezialines ferry to Venice. The whole trip took us around 5 hours, but it was worth it because the ferry company was really nice and offered a free tour of St Marc's Square and even had good deals for the gondola and water taxi rides for us. We chose the water taxi ride, which cost around 28 euros. Venice was pretty, with little alleyways and canals cutting through everywhere. Too many tourists though. The guided tour was also very informative, because otherwise we wouldn't know anything about the history and would've just blindly taken photos. It was the city where lions fly and pidgeons walked. Sadly, we had to leave at 5pm. So at around 4.15pm, we met the tour groups to take the water taxi back to where the ferry was parked. Fortunately, we managed to sit right at the back, where we could take really nice photos. Back from Venice, the next day was spent in Pula again, where we walked around old town and went to the beach. What surprised me was that European beaches were made of stones instead of sand. I saw this in Nice too. Our last destination also had the most wonderful accomodation. We were greeted to a big house with every kind of furniture and utensils possible. The owner gave us a free bottle of rose wine and a tub of Vanilla ice cream. Nice was near Monaco, but we did not visit it during our trip. Nice was very relaxing, and in my opinion, better than Paris. The first day was spent exploring the city, its cathedrals, old town, and the fortress. The second day, we went further to see an archeological museum and a cathedral in the park. While the cathedral was okay, the small garden beside it amazed me. It was home to many roses and other flowers. I've never seen roses grown from the soil before, so it was something new for me. I picked up some fallen petals to bring home as a souvenir. While Nice was also tourist oriented, the beach made up for almost everything. On the second day, which was also a Sunday, we finished exploring and made it back to the city center in noon. There wasn't any restaurants open, so we made do with KFC. In the afternoon, bk, fiona, rj and me decided to chill at the beach while joie and ys went to Longchamp. It was something I want to do, because firstly I really love beaches, and secondly, Nice is known for their beach, so why not chill there and experience the seaside life? The stones were hard to walk on barefooted though. The water was cold at first, but we slowly adjusted to the temperatures. But we mostly spent our time on the shore, suntanning. It was my first time suntanning as well (because who does that in Sentosa?), and I felt really relaxed and comfortable in my own body. It was nice having him beside me too. We stayed for 2 hours or so, before going back to cook carbonara. A huge part of the trip was memorable to me because he was there. He was there to carry my luggage up the stairs, push them for me when my handle broke, carried water when I was too lazy to do so, carried my bag when I was dying climbing up the mountain, made me laugh when I was upset, shared food with me, and so so so much more. I cannot imagine how this trip will be if he wasn't there for me. I love him, so so much. I wish he knows. Thinking about him now makes me sad again, because I'm here, on my bed alone, typing this, when just the day before, he would be beside me in bed, kissing me good night. I miss that. I miss Europe, I miss travelling, I miss my friends, and I miss him. I hope my life here in Singapore will turn out fine. I really really hope I can find a job soon. And I hope I will be braver.
