jaylah does not pry, though she finds herself curious. james tee seems to have been born to captain a starship, and she could not imagine him anywhere else in the universe. ❝ well. i am glad that you did join. you have saved many people, as well as me. the federation is being lucky to have you, if they are asking me. ❞
She doesn’t know him based on how he used to be, and while some of that
personality is still ingrained in him, most of it has left him. He isn’t angry at
her for her question, but is somewhat surprised that more isn’t asked. A
smile comes to his lips at her compliment, head ducking down a little, but
his words don’t exactly match his expression. “I wish I could’ve saved more.
Thank you, though.”
Now see, why do people always have to go and pry? He didn’t ask to be bothered here. Hadn’t thought anyone would even be awake at this hour, except maybe the folks suffering through a Gamma shift. Is it Jim’s turn for Gamma? He can’t recall – his mind’s been too busy as of late. Normally, he tries to keep track of which key people are working every shift, every day – he needs to get his head on straight. A hand comes up, rubs the sweat away, and he takes a deeper breath. Looking away from the void, it’s easier to get his body under control than it had been his mind – the reason he’d come here in the first place.
Though he expects some sort of comment or question, the one he receives is unexpected, and it gives him pause. He turns his head just slightly, eyes sliding to take Jim in, the way he stands, facing the emptiness of space, and looking – perfectly relaxed, perfectly natural, as if he just belongs here. And maybe he does. It’s something McCoy has never been able to wrap his mind around, no matter how he tries. His lips press into a line, and he looks away again, frowning thoughtfully.
“Duty.”
It’s a poor answer, doesn’t cover the scope or the depth of what he means; but that is the bare bones of it, really.
“A sense of duty. I feel like – like I ought to be here. I made a commitment to Starfleet when I joined, and that commitment has brought me out here. I’ve learned more about medicine than I ever would have on Earth. Hell, I’ve come up with cures for diseases I didn’t even know existed when I was back on solid ground.”
Any other man might say the words with pride, but McCoy just sounds — humbled, almost in awe of the experiences he’s had since joining.
“It scares the everloving hell out of me to be out here, no mistake. But at the end of the day, there’s nowhere else I think I’d rather be. Don’t ever doubt that.”
He doesn’t want to pry, not really anyway, but Jim can’t stop himself. Jim
also knows that Bones would comply regardless. The two had been with
each other since the beginning and Jim had taken that time to learn Bones.
How could one not learn the mannerisms of a friend after spending so much
time with said person? It seemed like the sort of thing that was impossible
to avoid.
Jim doesn’t mean to stare, but he does as he awaits Bones’ answer, the
look on his features showing that he’s listening wholeheartedly and totally.
At first, Bones’ answer is simple, one worded, and it truthfully suits him, but
then he opens up and begins to speak more in depth, words that Jim can
actually converse with. It’s nice to hear Bones talk like this, actually.
“I don’t doubt it,” Jim replies at first, turning away for his eyes to favor the
stars of space. “You’re doing a good job for someone who’s scared, though.
I’m not sure if it’d be the same out here without you, Bones.”
He nods, falling into step behind the captain as they leave the room. The
beta shift is nearing its end and the halls are quiet, only a few crewmembers
passing them as they walk towards the turbolift. The bar is similarly quiet – only
a few people in a variety of uniform colors grouped together on high stools.
“Would you object to sitting by the window, Captain ??” Spock asks,
breaking the easy silence that has fallen between them.
Having a quiet bar, surprisingly, is more preferable to Jim. When he was
younger he definitely would’ve thought differently, but he’d grow since then.
How he was in Iowa is a ghost of his current self, in a sense. Jim glances
towards Spock when he questions him, an amused look on his features.
“Object? Nope, I’d embrace it,” he states before making his way over to a
window seat, knowing that Spock would follow suit.
“An age thing,” Pavel repeated, all the good feelings that had been brewing inside of him suddenly falling flat. It was just to reassure him, because he was so young, so impressionable; it had nothing to do with his actual accomplishments. “Ah, well. Thank you.”
Immediately Jim notices the deflated nature of his actions, not realizing that
he would affect him like that. “No, that’s not what I meant! Most young
recruits are...reckless, don’t know what they’re doing--.” Boy, does Jim know
from experience. “You’re not that.”
jaylah nods, for she believes somehow that the enterprise is where she belongs. even though she still has trouble speaking standard despite all her lessons, even though she is the only one of her kind known to the federation. she has found a family, a life. ❝ i do. it feels like a home. ❞ she smiles faintly toward him, glad to know that james tee had given her that choice, glad to know that he thinks that she is meant to be here too. ❝ were you always wanting to be a captain? ❞
“It is,” he responds, the look in his eye showing that he understands
completely. He may not have been as isolated as she, per say, but feeling
like he truly belonged? This was something that meant a lot to Jim and he
felt it the most aboard the Enterprise. Her sudden question somewhat
surprises him, but he answers it nonetheless. “Heh, no. Definitely not. I
wasn’t even planning on joining Starfleet at first.”

concept: the enterprise landing on a planet with lots of plants and chekov picking flowers for everyone and making flower crowns that best match their shirt colours
uhura would put the flower in her hair, smile, and thank chekov
sulu would kiss chekovs forehead, and put the flower in the room where all his plants are kept
scotty would nod and smile as a thank you, and when chekov walks away hed turn to keenser and say something like ‘aye, why canne ya be as nice as that lad’
kirk would ruffle chekovs hair and place the flower somewhere safe on his captains chair
bones would be grumpy and probably say something like ‘god damn it boy those flowers might be carrying a deadly disease’ but after double checking hed feel bad and thank chekov for it
and finally spock would be very confused by it, saying ‘we are on the same ship, i do not need a peace offering’ but chekov insists its a gift of friendship, spock smiles a little and places it neatly next to his badge
